  • Per Commons:COM:FOP#Canada: freedom of panorama doesn't apply to text. Stefan2 (talk) 19:35, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Delete per "The freedom provided by the quoted section does not apply to typical two-dimensional works such as paintings, murals, advertising hoardings, maps, posters or signs" --AdmrBoltz 19:46, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • Clarification: Freedom of panorama only applies to certain artistic works. Text does not constitute an artistic work but a literary work. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:48, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • It's not a two dimensional work though, nor a picture of text; it's a plaque erected as a monument or statue would be. The text can be copyright, but use of this picture isn't copying the text, and reusing the picture doesn't infringe on the copyright of the text; I'm not sure how that even applies here. - Floydian τ ¢ 19:53, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
          • The text is clearly included on the photograph and the text isn't an artistic work. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:55, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
            • Your point? The plaque is, and it is the subject of the photo. If I take a picture of a statue with two words on it, that picture isn't a copyright violation. Again, this is not a two-dimensional piece of art work, so I think you're misinterpreting the law to exercise your continued over-precautionary stampede. - Floydian τ ¢ 20:07, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
              • Oh, hey, how about this, from the link you provided. What a joke.
"Under Section 32.2 (1)(b) of the Canadian Copyright Act 1985 (PDF, 786 kB), it is not an infringement of copyright for any person to reproduce, in a painting, drawing, engraving, photograph or cinematographic work … (i) an architectural work (defined as any building or structure or any model of a building or structure"); or (ii) "a sculpture or work of artistic craftsmanship or a cast or model of a sculpture or work of artistic craftsmanship, that is permanently situated in a public place or building"."
"But it's got words on it so it doesn't meet my definition of sculpture" - Floydian τ ¢ 20:10, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
                • Indeed, this is not a sculpture, so an exception which allows you to take photos of sculptures won't help you here. As stated on that page, you may only reproduce architectural works, sculptures and works of artistic craftsmanship. The text on this sign is none of those, so you may not reproduce the text. --Stefan2 (talk) 18:23, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • The copyright tag mainly seems to apply to various legal documents, but this can hardly be claimed to be a legal document. Stefan2 (talk) 21:48, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • It is an official document. The tag applies not just to legal documents but also to ones with a legislative or administrative nature. As an official map, I think it qualifies. Furthermore, as recognising the now disputed islands as Japanese, it could be considered an official decision, which also would allow it to remain under the cited article. John Smith's (talk) 21:33, 7 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
      • Then if it applies to documents other than legal documents, then why doesn't the template say so? --Stefan2 (talk) 18:26, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • Umm, it does say it applies to non-legal documents - e.g. the reference to administrative? If you're getting hung up about the word "and", the template has a slight error in it. According to the relevant statute referred to, it should be "or". John Smith's (talk) 21:49, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
        • Tweaked the template to avoid any confusion. John Smith's (talk) 21:52, 10 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
