The result of the discussion was: Delete. It is probable that this book was first published in Canada. As it was originally published in 1958, it is copyrighted in the United States until 2054, and in Canada until 50 years after the death of both authors. - File:Map_tsr_1918.jpg (delete | talk | history | logs).
- Map is scanned from page 9 of Rails from the Junction by James V. Salmon, prepared for publication by John F. Bromley and Mike Filey. The introduction to RftJ states that "James Victor Salmon passed away on November 18th, 1958." However, both Messrs. Bromley and Filey are both still alive. Further, although no publication date is mentioned, the caption to a picture on page 19 implies that photo was taken in 1969 (i.e. less than 50 years ago). - Was the image created by Salmon, or was it a scan of an older image that was used in the book? Is there information relating to the credits of pictures used in the book? I uploaded it under the impression that it related to a much older (out of copyright) image. On the other hand, perhaps it could still possibly be used under Template:Non-free historic image?Raellerby (talk) 21:05, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- I have contacted John Bromley, and will provide an answer once I hear back from him. Useddenim (talk) 00:21, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
John Bromley’s reply, verbatum and in toto:
“Interesting.
“This map was personally hand-drawn by me and produced for the sole purpose of illustrating the part of Toronto dealt with in the publication. The copyright would fall to Mike Filey and myself. Much of the original text was written by Salmon in the late 1950s but much of it was redone by Mike and myself, using the original text as a base. The publisher, Lyon Productions, does not exist and never did, Mike and I made that up.
“The copyright should end 50 years after the expiration of the last of Filey or myself, and neither of us has any plans to shuffle off in the near future, both being in good health.
“Wikipedia needs to be made aware of this and remove the map, as it was uploaded without permission and I find it personally offensive that someone else would use my personal work for their own purposes. I doubt if there's any malice in the uploading, but whoever did it must realize that copyrights exist for a reason and cannot be breached without penalty.”
- Duly noted. Image has been removed from Toronto Suburban Railway, which was the only article that used it, and many apologies for not being aware of its background before employing it. No harm was intended. It does appear that the book is currently out of print at this time - even if it is only 20 pages in length (according to the bibliographical data about it at http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM433280&R=433280), it would be worth it for those rail fans that appear to be looking for copies.Raellerby (talk) 19:03, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
- Apparently the author's estate is looking into the possibility of of reissuing it. You could try contacting R.L Kennedy at [email protected] for more information. Useddenim (talk) 22:21, 10 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

- Not sure about this one, but thought I'd flag it so that people with more knowledge of copyright can discuss. The file contains a man singing his own lyrics which are obviuosly his copyright. But the music that he's singing them to is Video Killed the Radio Star which he almost certainly doesn't own the copyright to. The file links to a website that claims Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 1.0 for the file, but I'm unsure if that applies. X201 (talk) 09:33, 9 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
