Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Jeff dean/Userboxes/Atheist (3rd nomination)

The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the miscellaneous page below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the page's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.

The result of the discussion was Keep. The "inflammatory or divisive" restriction on userboxes tends to create an element of subjectivity, since one person may find something inflammatory while another does not. The one-sided !voting in this discussion, along with the keep results in past MFDs, indicates the community in general does not find this userbox particularly inflammatory or divisive. --RL0919 (talk) 00:27, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All prior XfDs for this page:

Userboxes must not be inflammatory or divisive. and personal attacks. on God. Very offensive. Should be deleted or replace "God" with another item. ♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 09:03, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Note: In the userbox, to the left of the text "This user doesn't believe in myths or superstitions", is an image of the work "God" with a red line struck through "God". -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 13:50, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: Userboxes exist to let others know about an editor, including their beliefs and practices. I would much rather have an editor declare their view of religion on their user page in the form of a userbox than have them editing articles like religion with an undeclared bias. There are much better userbox, which doesn't strike anything. See [1] for example.--♫Greatorangepumpkin♫T 19:24, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep: This userbox has been assaulted by believers repeatedly. Grow up, stop it, and leave it alone! If you do not like it, do not look at it and ignore it. Whoami 24 (talk) 19:26, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep jesus christ how many times do people have to mess with this? Just don't look at the userbox, simple as that! CTJF83 20:44, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong keep Just a typical userbox. Bringing this kind of thing to Mfd is a waste of time. --Kleinzach 05:58, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete unless toned down. The red line struck through "God" clearly is inflammatory and divisive on multiple levels. That's gotta go. Generally see WP:NOTBATTLEGROUND - Wikipedia is not a place to carry on ideological battles. The box contains two negative items - the crossed out God and "doesn't believe". That is one or two too many. See Wikipedia:Userboxes#Potentially divisive words. Also, the assertion that God is a myth or superstition does not directly appear in either God or Existence of God and the presentation of the statement as factual (or at least without out a qualifier) is sufficiently similar to to the assertion in MfD Userbox Allah is the one and only God to require toning down or deletion. This userbox fails WP:UBX's "Express what you do like, rather than what you don't like. Express what you comprehend, rather than what you don't comprehend. Express what you do, rather than what you don't. Express who you are, rather than who you aren't." In addition, unlike typical userboxes, this userbox does not convey information related to encyclopedia editing or related to Wikipedia's goals so there is no basis to give the userbox a benefit of doubt. -- Uzma Gamal (talk) 14:01, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Three of the italics don't fit. Never said we don't like anything, nothing about comprehension, and we clearly are expressing who we are. CTJF83 20:11, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Strong keep. This is a very popular userbox with dozens of references. If someone finds it "offensive," he or she should just not use it or look at it. I see no problem whatsoever with this userbox. 67.142.177.20 (talk) 20:43, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
