Portal:Special operations[edit]

Abandoned mini-portal on a narrow topic. WP:POG requires that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers." This portal has neither large numbers of readers and no maintainers. The portal has essentially been abandoned for six years (the creator, Dainomite, has made seven Wikipedia edits in 2019, but last touched it and portal space in general in September 2014), save some passing one-off updates. The page view count is abysmal. From January 1 - June 30 2019, there was an average of 3 views per day to the main page (while the head article Special Operations had 346 views per day in the same period, which is not enough to sustain a portal.)

Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Special Operations shows the one article and one biography were added in May 2018 and are both transclusions. This leaves the portal 18 articles short of the POG minimum of 20 articles. The two DYK's both date to 2013. The two pictures in the gallery date to 2013.

WP:POG also guides that "the portal should be associated with a WikiProject (or have editors with sufficient interest) to help ensure a supply of new material for the portal and maintain the portal.". However, while Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history is active, as this this recent discussion there about Portal:Napoleonic Wars illustrates, no one there is interested in maintaining low-view abandoned portals. None of these editors even made it as far as the MfD for that portal, let alone developed a comprehensive recovery and maintenance plan with an assembled team of maintainers. Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Incubator/Special operations was also the sole creation of Dainomite, has no talk page, and has been abandoned for six years.

This long abandoned Bonsai portal was barely developed and fails WP:POG on numerous counts. It's time to just Delete it. Newshunter12 (talk) 05:16, 5 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Note to closing admin. I don't want in any way to prejudge the outcome ... but if you close this discussion as delete, please can you not remove the backlinks? Delete - Both the pageview rate and the number of articles are absurdly low. The pageview rate of 3 pages daily is less than an arcane measure of view noise that User:BrownHairedGirl has measured as a background level. There is no short-term reason to expect that a re-creation of this portal will address the problems. Any proposed re-creation of this portal using a more modern design, and taking into account the failures of many portals, and including a maintenance plan (since lack of maintenance is a problem with most portals), can go to Deletion Review. Delete, and oppose re-creation.
