Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Himalayas
- The following discussion is an archived debate of the proposed deletion of the miscellaneous page below. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the page's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this page.
The result of the discussion was: delete. Seems like the consensus is that the topic is portal-worthy but that the current version is unsalvageable. I am not entirely certain what "park" in Bermicourt's rationale means; it seems like the community (that participated here) would not object to a restoration if it involves active maintenance. Portal:Himalayas[edit]
Abandoned portal from 2006.
Created in June 2006 by Rama's Arrow (talk · contribs), this is just a static page, with no updates and no rotation of content.
The list of subpages at Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Himalayas is sparse:
- one Portal:Himalayas/Selected article, which since 2006 has been the town of Darjeeling. Some minor tweaks,[1] but same topic
- the image is at Portal:Himalayas/Picture of the week, which has been a long week, lasting since November 2006 when the mage chosen was image:Gdm.jpg, which was deleted in 2011.
Wikipedia has plenty of coverage of the Himalaya, so it theoretically passes the WP:POG guidance that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers".
This one clearly has not attracted maintainers. :WP:POG#How_often_to_update? says that unless automated, the content selection should be updated monthly, or preferably weekly. Even on a monthly cycle, this pseudo-portal has missed over 150 consecutive updates, and it is time to stop wasting the time of readers by luring them to this abandoned draft.
So I propose that this abandoned portal and its sub-pages) be deleted per WP:TNT, without prejudice to recreating a curated portal in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:49, 10 May 2019 (UTC)
- Delete - As BHG says, without prejudice against re-creation, but not waiting for a magician. Robert McClenon (talk) 00:53, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- Comment - If the magician does show up, he will be an Indian magician, and the spells and incantations will be in Sanskrit. But the magician is probably drinking Darjeeling tea in Darjeeling with Godot. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:57, 11 May 2019 (UTC)

- Keep but park. The topic, as has been said, is certainly broad enough and this is not one of those autospam portals. What it lacks is a maintainer. Frankly it's no worse than many articles on Wikipedia e.g. which are created and then left incomplete and not updated and we don't dynamite those. Can we not 'park' it, i.e. lower its profile appropriately in mainspace until a maintainer or maintainers are willing to pick it up. Then at least they have the basic portal to work with and don't have to create it from scratch? I think someone suggested something like this on the portal talk page (they may have referred to it as 'incubation', but that implies something is going on which it isn't. Bermicourt (talk) 07:41, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Bermicourt, the idea of incubation was a suggestion of mine in response to a proposal by @Espresso Addict: see WT:WikiProject_Portals#Proposing_two-stage_process_for_deletion_of_portals and my response at WT:WikiProject_Portals#Long_reply_and_ALT_proposal_from_BHG:_the_incubator.
- However, even if some such process was in place, I would oppose using it for examples such as this. The decade-old, content-forked sub-pages should be discarded, and anyone who wants to build a half-decent portal should start from a fresh sheet and build a modern portal without content forking, possibly along the lines of the excellent navigation-focused portals you maintain such as Portal:Harz Mountains, or alternatively something like Portal:Geophysics. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:14, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
- Comment - Abandoned draft of a portal, 12 subpages, created 2006-06-28 06:43:23 by User:Rama's Arrow. Let a craven pick a stone each year from the mountain, and wait for the Himalaya been erased. And then discover how expanded will be this not a portal ?. Portal:Himalayas. Pldx1 (talk) 13:06, 11 May 2019 (UTC)
