Portal:Dentistry (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)

Stillborn portal. Six selected articles created in January / May 2007. Three are B-class articles, two are C or B class and one is C class.

DYK was last updated in November 2007 in an edit the editor called "long overdue". Mark Schierbecker (talk) 04:25, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Note to closing admin. I don't want in any way to prejudge the outcome ... but if you close this discussion as delete, please can you not remove the backlinks? I have an AWB setup which allows me to easily replace them with links to the next most specific portal(s) (in this case Portal:Medicine), without creating duplicate entries. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:33, 6 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as per Mark S. Only 6 articles, created in 2007, two unchanged since 2007, one edited in 2008, one in 2011, one in 2013, one in 2018, which is neither enough articles nor enough maintenance. In Jan19-Jun19, 22 pageviews daily, 730 pageviews daily for article. There is no short-term reason to expect that a re-creation of this portal will address the problems. Any proposed re-creation of this portal using a more modern design, and taking into account the failures of many portals, and including a maintenance plan (since lack of maintenance is a problem with most portals), can go to Deletion Review. • Delete per the nom and Robert M. This portal has been abandoned for over a decade, save some one-off updates by passing editors, and is 14 articles short of POG's minimum of 20. Since late 2006, the lead of WP:POG has said "Do not expect other editors to maintain a portal you create" ... and this one has not been maintained by Dozenist, who last updated it in March 2009 and left Wikipedia that April. It clearly fails WP:POG's requirement that portals should be about subjects broad enough to attract large numbers of readers and maintainers. This portal has had over a decade of no steady maintainers and it had a very low 22 views per day from January 1 to June 30 2019 (while the head article Dentistry had 730 views per day in the same period, which is not enough to sustain a portal). This is a dramatic long-term decline from the 58 views per day it had from July 1 to Dec. 30 2015.
POG also states portals should be associated with a wikiproject, but Wikipedia:WikiProject Dentistry is semi-active (the last editor to editor conversation was in Oct. 2017), and the portal has never been mentioned on the talk page and is not listed at all the main page. Portals stand or fall on their merits in the now, not what could someday hypothetically happen with them, and this one falls flat. I oppose re-creation, as over a decade of hard evidence shows Dentistry is not a broad enough topic to attract readers or maintainers. Newshunter12 (talk) 02:39, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, and oppose re-creation. Low readership + small selection of sub-topics + over a decade of almost no maintenance = clear fail of the WP:POG requirement that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers". --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 05:07, 11 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
