Portal:Assyrians[edit]

Old-style manual non-portal, abandoned since 2011.

This portal was created in 2011 by @Kathovo (talk · contribs), who has not edited since mid-2016, and made only 50 edits in the preceding 17 months. Apart from mostly-automated formatting changes, the pages seem to be unchanged since creation in 2011. The subpages listed at Special:PrefixIndex/Portal:Assyrians show only one selected article and one selected biography, but 15 selected pictures.

It also includes 3 DYK pages and Portal:Assyrians/Assyrians news, all of whose entries lack a year, but were added in 2011.

So in effect this is just a static page with a rotation of pictures. To my mind, that's not a portal: it's a slim single issue of a magazine with an 8-year-old news section that gives no indication of being 8 years old.

The B-class head article Assyrian people and the navbox Template:Assyrian people footer provide much better navigation and a better introduction to the topics.

Like most portals, this one is barely used: only 5 pageviews/day in Jan–Feb 2019.

The topic is probably broad enough to theoretically satisfy WP:POG, which says that portals should be about "broad subject areas, which are likely to attract large numbers of interested readers and portal maintainers". However, in practice this one attracts neither readers nor maintainers.

So while there is a case for saying the portal be deleted without prejudice to recreating an actually-curated and maintained portal, in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time, I think that in practice that would be merely wishful thinking. Comment. This is another one that's way outside my areas of expertise, but sounds broadly viable. Assyria was a major civilisation with a long history. However if it's static with just an image gallery then I'm not sure it's a huge loss. I don't see any point in pre-judging what volunteers might care to do in future. Delete - Abandoned draft of a portal, 29 subpages, created 2011-07-04 14:18:00 by User:Kathovo. My personal expertise tells me that ONE article + ONE biography doesn't suffice to provide a navigation tool, whatever the topic. Delete - This is an abandoned heritage portal about which User:BrownHairedGirl has said "Just Delete It", a strong statement from her for a reasonable critic of portals. Delete without prejudice. I get the topic of Assyria is obscure for most, but it really is a broad subject we have lots of pages for. These aren't even poorly written articles, WP:WikiProject Assyria lists the following modern day articles (1) GA-Class: Simele massacre, Holy Leaven (2) Former GA-class: Peshitta, Assyrian independence, (3) B-Class: Assyrian genocide, Assyrian people, and several other general interest articles (ie rated high-importance on the project's importance scale). Were I to include pages related to the historic Mesopotamian empire, then the number could easily triple.
I suspect the lack of maintenance (and general activity for the WikiProject as well) is because... well actually I have no clue. I know it isn't because a huge amount of activity at incubator:Wp/aii. At some point in like 2011/12 a lot of this activity just dropped, but I am hopeful in the future this will change. Saying this should be deleted with prejudice is similar to suggesting Portal:Kurdistan or Portal:Catalonia will not have interest in them any time soon.
