karmafist[edit]
After Andrevan's oppose, this Nomination has failed. Redwolf24 (talk) 02:43, 11 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, sorry for the lag and confusion. I added my name awhile ago expecting to be contacted, but nada until this last weekend, and I only got on IRC on Sunday.
My ultimate goal with being on the Mediation Committee is trying to add an outside perspective for disputes between users and in lucky cases, creating a rapport between the two quarreling users.
My experience is somewhat limited, but I do have some informal mediation experience at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Cool Cat/Wiki-politics, and my talk page, is overwhelmingly positive.
Although I do have Asperger's Syndrome, please keep in mind that this is more of a difference of perception than a difference in social abilities. 7 year olds with Asperger's don't play nice with others, I just see things in a sometimes "leftfield" way.
I should warn you that I may have problems mediating with far-right wing editors since i'm a Liberal, and I may have problems with editors who are overly anti-New Hampshire however, i'll do what I can if asked. Karmafist 00:17, 5 October 2005 (UTC) Mediation committee:[reply]

- I'd like to see him respond to the discussion here. Andre (talk) 20:32, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If he doesn't respond to this discussion, I think we should veto his application. Andre (talk) 17:59, 4 October 2005 (UTC)Veto: Lacks tact and occasionally civility (called several users jerks [1] and the "mentally retarded" comment as mentioned); appears to fundamentally misunderstand several policies including NPOV (applies to articles only, not RFAs), AGF (just because an action is done in good faith does not mean it is an acceptable one), and POINT (votes do not affect Wikipedia's day-to-day functioning) based on User:Karmafist/wikiphilosophies and User talk:Andrevan. Support Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 23:52, 7 October 2005 (UTC)Ugh. Kelly Martin raises a good point. You write It's unclear if Maoririder is a kid or perhaps mentally retarded... Karmafist, I would like to hear what you have to say about this first. Back to neutral. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 00:05, 8 October 2005 (UTC)OK, back to support. Karmafist, though, just for future reference: "mentally retarded" is an extremely controversial term, and you should try to avoid calling anyone that in the future, regardless of whether you believe so or not. (wags finger) Especially don't call anyone that in mediation! However, I believe that you acted in good faith and had no intentions to insult anyone. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk | WS 22:24, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]- Neutral I haven't seen enough of Karmafist to support, but I wouldn't veto an application for that reason! I expect you will be a fine mediator, however, so this is not an opposition. [[Sam Korn]] 17:48, 9 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Outside opinions:
- Support I support this members nomination to the mediation committee.
- Comment I've had little interaction with this user, so it wouldn't be fair for me to oppose. But I do want to note that he does have Asperger's syndrome. I just want to make sure that this doesn't impair his judgement at all. Any 'mudslinging' during the mediation process could upset him. Acetic'Acid 22:04, September 1, 2005 (UTC)
- I would like to state that I have a problem when personal issues like this are used against a person this way Ryan Norton T | @ | C 23:13, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- I too would like to register my protest. That's a very unkind remark. =Nichalp «Talk»= 17:58, September 3, 2005 (UTC)
- It was in no way meant to be unkind. I don't want this to be held against him. I just thought it might be a good idea to mention as there have been problems in the past with Denelson83, another user with AS. These issues escalated to two failed adminships and a RFC against Denelson. I don't like comparing people, especially in a professional setting, but I don't know if AS affects everyone the same way. I wish Karmafist all the best, and I really hope he is appointed to the Mediation Committee. I just want to be 100% sure that it won't hinder him. Acetic'Acid 21:47, September 3, 2005 (UTC)
- Heh, well thanks for being honest :). Remember that just because a person with AS has problems (or with any disability) with something does not mean its due to AS. Maybe it was a lack of matuarity or something (which I'm sad to say applies to "normal" people also ). Also, those kind of statements, even if they are well-informed and civil are not appropriate in a place like this (in a pshycologist's office etc.). Ryan Norton T | @ | C 21:55, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- I'm glad you clarified. =Nichalp «Talk»= 13:01, September 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Alright, I'll take that advice. I want to see him become a mediator, but I hope he is ready. Maybe, instead of just giving him his first case, he could "buddy-up" with a veteran mediator who will kind of show him the ropes? That is, if KF feels he needs help. Anyway, sorry for the disruption. Good luck, Karmafist! Acetic'Acid 21:40, September 4, 2005 (UTC)
- Support forgot. User seems level-headed. Ryan Norton T | @ | C 18:44, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Strong Support per Karmafist's response. I'm sorry to have ever doubted you, and I wish you all the best. Acetic'Acid 05:55, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Comments:
- Regarding the Aspergers: I'd like to hope that all mediators "team up" in order to provide different perspectives towards resolving disputes unless outside views interfere or are invalid due to a lack of particular insight (granted, there should always be a "point person" when dealing with mediation situations in my opinion, but that person would be remiss if they ignored quality assistance in helping resolve conflicts)
- Per Acid's comments, it's not a particularly big deal to me regarding the Asperger's, it's my opinion that AS is just a hodge podge of symptoms in DSM IV that psychologists label on people in order to categorize them into a rough diagnosis. I have met dozens of other people with AS, and while I could see some similiar traits to myself in them, I am more sociable than all of them combined, and quite frankly, all of them seemed disparate enough to each other as well. Unlike with most disabilities there is absolutely no way you would know that I have AS unless I told you. Many people don't believe me when I say I have AS, my friend and Asperger's expert Dr. Larry Welkowitz believes that i've progressed past even having it anymore. If it weren't for my occasional faux pas, probably the only reason why i'd say that I have it at all is because of my regrettable adolescence, that it occasionally assists me when I wear the term with pride on my sleeve and because I can sometimes be odd or eccentric compared to "normal" people. Karmafist 04:12, 5 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- I am concerned about this editor's endorsement of the lead opinion in the Maoririder RFC. Is this indicative of how this editor will resolve conflict? Kelly Martin 00:01, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
- Per Kelly Martin's query, I'd like to refer you all to this, this, and this comment on Maoririder's Talk Page. You can see just by taking a look at Maori's talk page that I and many other editors have tried to help him become a better Wikipedian, but he has decided to ignore that assistance and continue on being a (slightly) disruptive presence. Mediation can only occur when both sides wish to listen, and from what I've seen, Maoririder has stopped listening. Karmafist 00:47, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
