Where is the issue taking place?
SeaWorld
Who's involved?
User:Ehouk1 User:Fredjake
What's going on?
Dispute and rvs over whether Orcas/Killers Whales should be called Orcas or Killer Whales, the deletion of information in Orca/Killer Whale section that is critical of SeaWorld, I changed it initially to Orca and added the critical information. It got changed back by an IP address, then I put it as Orca again, was changed again by IP then I rv. It was last changed back by Fredjake, see talk and history of article for more information.
What would you like to change about that?
stop the possible edit war. I want the name to be orca in line with orca article and critical information to be kept. I want guidance from an impartial mediator to see if this is right.
If you'd prefer we work discreetly, how can we reach you?
...
Would you be willing to be a mediator yourself, and accept a mediation assignment in a different case?
This is, following the Categorical Imperative, the idea that you might want to do
what you expect others to do. You don't have to, of course, that's why it's a question.
Not at the moment, busy, but in future, yes.

Mediator response[edit]

After reviewing some literature (including encyclopedia articles) on the orca/killer whale distinction: either term will work. "Killer whale" is the older yet still common designation for the species, yet "orca" is the modern, scientifically correct designation. I believe the article should include both, just to avoid confusion. I would like both parties involved to submit proposed solutions to the problem in the "Compromise" section, which we can use as a starting point if there are any further disagreements.

Also, in order to satisfy WP:NPOV, I believe some criticism of SeaWorld's whale captivity is necessary, but not to the extent that it comprises a significant portion of the wiki entry. If you disagree on what would be appropriate, please submit a short statement in the "Discussion" section, where you describe what you feel would be an appropriate degree of criticism in the article. I hope we can work this out together. Quaere verum 02:14, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Evidence[edit]

Please report evidence in this section with {{Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Evidence}} for misconduct and {{Wikipedia:Mediation_Cabal/Evidence3RR}} for 3RR violations. If you need help ask a mediator or an advocate. Evidence is of limited use in mediation as the mediator has no authority. Providing some evidence may, however, be useful in making both sides act more civil.
Wikipedia:Etiquette: Although it's understandably difficult in a heated argument, if the other party is not as civil as you'd like them to be, make sure to be more civil than him or her, not less.

Compromise offers[edit]

This section is for listing and discussing compromise offers.

Discussion[edit]

I believe what I had put in before did not comprise the article, This is the critical paragrath:

Critics often attack for a lack of respect towards its Orcas. One such critic is marine biologist Richard Ellis had this to say on the subject "It is not for us to demonstrate respectful dominance over those creatures, but only respect. Sea World makes clowns of the orcas, depriving them of their dignity. Furthermore, orcas are among the most family-oriented animals we know. They live in tight groups, and removal of any father, mother, or juvenile - even if for hours - is a severely traumatic experience." [1]. Organisations such as the WSPA and the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society campaign against the captivity of Orcas and SeaWorld Organisations such as the WSPA and WDCS campaign against the captivity of Orcas and SeaWorld which owns 55% of the worlds captive orcas.

I am going to exspand the section about orca's in captivity in the Orca article, and their could be a link to this.

My edit had of the paragrath had Orcas (also known and Killer Whales). I feel it should be mainly orca that is what the wikipedia article is called, but (also know as killer whales) is also needed to advoid confusion.

It appears that you do not have another party willing to actually participate in this mediation. If there is no response within a week, I will mark this as closed. Consider taking this to the Mediation or Arbitration Committee. Quaere verum 20:48, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
