File:Surge Soda Cans.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Ilikenwf (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

Both of these images are currently on Surge (drink). However, both of the images being present probably fails WP:NFCC#3 since they both illustrate the subjects' different logos. If I had to choose between which one to delete, it would be File:Surge Soda Cans.png since it is an image of the cans and not just the logo. Steel1943 (talk) 01:19, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File:Safari selected in Quicksilver.png (delete | talk | history | links | logs) – uploaded by Skeejay (notify | contribs | uploads | upload log).

This image is actually non-free and can be plausibly replaced with a free image. (Violation of WP:NFCC.)

The subject of this image is supposed to be Quicksilver (software), which is a free app under Apache license. However, all that appears of Quicksilver in this shot are three purple simple geometric shapes. (Not eligible for copyright protection.) Instead, the bulk of the image consists of three macOS icons, which are non-free.

In accordance to WP:NFCC, one can plausibly make a free screenshot by downloading Quicksilver to a Mac computer, insert three icons corresponding to free apps on it and take a screenshot. Codename Lisa (talk) 08:23, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

According to Commons the nominal auother died in 1932 so this should be okay for Commons now? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:19, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comment This file, like the Cecil Hepworth file below, was also copied to Commons without the knowledge of the uploader. It's been there since 2014, true, but it has only the US PD-1923 abroad license. It needs another license to remain at Commons.
Since there seem to be quite a few files taken to Commons with "don't move" tags without the knowledge of the editors who uploaded them, my suggestion would be to first start a Commons discussion about whether the file really belongs there or not before tagging files here for FFD.
Not so long ago we had a film poster up at FFD because there was a Commons copy; it was suggested the en:WP file be deleted on that grounds. The Commons file turned out to have been copied from here and indeed had a copyright notice. The Commons file was deleted; WP would have lost the properly licensed non-free copy of the poster if it had been deleted as a result of the FFD listing. We hope (talk) 20:50, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - it's definitely free enough for Commons, and probably was eligible for F8. The do not move to Commons template is automatically part of the US-specific license and can be ignored once free status is ascertained, in my opinion. Magog the Ogre (tc) 21:36, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if sometimes people actually bothered to examine things more closely. This process was now Files for Discussion. It was listed because I think the license on it is wrong, and wanted a second opinion before it was deleted as F8, precisely because it was now copyright-free. There was a question at the start of the thread. I got the answer I wanted. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:46, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I know ShakespeareFan00 hasn't been terribly clear - I've spoken to him and advised him that in future, he must be explicit that he doesn't want to delete files such as the one above, and that he must be very clear that he's only enquiring about the copyright status in order to determine if it is possible to copy a file to Commons (and consequentially, he should ask the uploader if they want to retain a local copy). He will also need recognise during a FFD listing that the file is correctly licensed and that it can remain on English Wikipedia regardless of whether it can be uploaded to Commons. Okay, Deep breath. Let's try explaining this again.

The image under disscussion is hosted locally. It was tagged in a way that was indicating that it shouldn't be moved to Commons. However, the information provided suggested that any copyright had in fact expired and thus the license need updating. In parallel the same media had been uploaded to Commons, and thusly if the license there was "free" and the license here was "free" the file would potentially qualify for an F8 speedy deletion. The reason for raising the issue here was to confirm that the reasoning about it being PD was sound.

I fail to see how a little bit of caution is a waste of time. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:58, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for explaining it again for the first time. You may not realize it, but {{PD-US-1923-abroad}} adds a "do not move to Commons" banner. Nobody took steps to "tag" the image. Also, for a variety of reasons, there are editors who prefer not to have their images moved to Commons. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 18:57, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I still think the PD-US-1923 abroad tag is wrong. Perhaps it should also have a PD-Russia tag?

Anyway thanks for adding the Keep-local, regardless of what Commons says. :)

  • I specifically requested that the local file be kept also; I have been subject to retaliatory deletions (harassment) at Commons and want this file retained here to ensure that the thugs who run rampant there do not obliterate the material. Carrite (talk) 04:47, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Image is duplicated at Commons, an image by a photogrpaher that died in 1912, is clearly PD, so I am not understanding the Do not move to commons notice on this. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:05, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Commons apparently treats the equivalent of this image c:File:Cecil_M._Hepworth_1915.jpg as PD-US-1923.

The image is over 100 years old, so I am wondering if this can be deleted as F8. If not can someone give the appropriate rationale so I can start the relevant disscussions at Commons. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:51, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comment A copy of it was moved to Commons more than 2 years ago despite the "don't move" tag. I had no idea there was a Commons file until now. When we finish we should ideally have one image of Hepworth that's "legal" either at Commons or here. We hope (talk) 18:25, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because the Commons file has no country of origin license, I've started the discussion about it at Commons. We hope (talk) 18:43, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Closed at Commons as "keep". I've removed the keep local tag; no reason why this can't go as F8. We hope (talk) 14:17, 13 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Referral to FFD due to the direction of c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Nikolaev commune 2008 stairs 01.jpg, where it seems architectural elements are now acceptable with respect to Russian FoP. Not a straight F8 given the original up-loaders comments (which could have been made prior to the changes to FoP rules in Russia), but could be moved to Commons if I am right about the direction of the linked discussion.
