The policy sats: "A montage created by the copyright holder of the images used to create the montage is considered a single non-free item and not separate items." Ah, I didn't notice that the montage ("the logo") came directly from the publisher. The image is referred to as "the logo" in the fair use rationale, but it doesn't look like a logo, so the image doesn't have a valid fair use rationale. --Stefan2 (talk) 11:28, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

UE - I absolutely affirm and confirm the uploaded image is not of Cutmouth John, the person captioned in the image. Further, the image was not obtained from a WP:RS, but rather some random internet auction site. Internet auction sites are not WP:RS for images or anything else; their captions and descriptors cannot be considered encyclopedic or accurate. I'm trying to get to how you know that. For instance, do you know who it is, then? Or, what leads you to believe that it's not Cutmouth John.

I'm guessing that you wouldn't have said this unless you're really sure. I'm just trying to understand. Clarification on this might help with any further research. For instance, perhaps there are two men that were both called "Poor Crane" but their identities became confused. That's one guess. Is that it?--07:35, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Yes, perhaps. Or perhaps it's just some random dude in a headdress c. 1800s (pro-tip - Umatilla and Cayuse didn't wear roach headgear). The source was a published catalog of Civil War era photographs - and I have definitely used published exhibition or auction catalogs as sources for articles about visual arts.

In this case, I'm getting that you're not going to directly answer my question. You seem so certain, I'm willing to go with it and will assume that I don't need to watch for anything like two "Poor Cranes".--CaroleHenson (talk) 08:10, 24 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
