The result of the discussion was: Kept. The below searching (which I've duplicated) makes it almost certain that this item, published without a copyright notice, did not have registered copyright later and so is {{PD-US-1989}}. It seems very unlikely that the makers would register copyright for this one-off use item. - Peripitus (Talk) 11:27, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright violation: scan of copyrighted artwork howcheng {chat} 02:19, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

NO, the medal is NOT under copyright, its 30+ years old and was designed to be in the public domain to be a celebratory event. I also gave you 7 other examples of medals. WHICH meet deletion criteria you provide...WHAT IS THE ANSWER???Coal town guy (talk) 02:52, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hitchens, I appreciate you sending me to a flowchart which not by intention was useless. The object was for public use, that I scanned because I own it...WHY is this a copyright violation.??Coal town guy (talk) 04:34, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Because the artwork on the medal is copyrighted. Just like you can't take a photo of a Picasso, or use a videocamera to record a movie in a theater and call it public domain. howcheng {chat} 09:16, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. However, of the 6+ examples of other images I provided, I have noted that per your own definition those should be marked as well. Oddly, within 24 hours of uploading this image, of a medal, celebrating coal being mined for 100 years is immediately tagged. The Olympic medal, under 15 years of age, is a blatant copyright infringement. Coal town guy (talk) 04:54, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment There's a possibility that the original work is in the public domain; if so, there would be no problems here. Had this been published before 1977, it would be fine, since it was published without a copyright notice; however, the definition of "publication" was changed for 1977, and publications lacking a copyright notice could still be protected if the owner registered them within a certain chunk of time. With this in mind, it would help if Coal town guy could give us more details on the item in question (so we could see whether it counted as "published"), and also if someone knowledgeable about post-1977 would check whatever database would contain records of this kind of post-publication copyright claim for the period. I can't do it, because I don't know where to look. Nyttend (talk) 06:01, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I did some rather extensive searches with multiple keywords (some of which) , including Pocahontas AND Centennial, Pocahontas and Coal and Pocahontas and Celebration no match was found for a medal .The only returns are for literature and a some railroad diagrams. WHAT does that mean?I also did searches on the ORCO company, nothing was returned in regards to a medal, or token or coinCoal town guy (talk) 17:32, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would be delighted to provide further detail of the medal. It has a denomination of 3 dollars on the reverse and was made by ORCO, the Ohio Register company. The die for the reverse has not been used for well over 50 years, as this was a stylized reverse used by ORCO with several varieties of its coal scrip. NOTE: Its not exact, but again, meant to be an omage. I also own several pieces of actual ORCO coal scrip from the 30's and 40's, the verbage and of course logo are different on those pieces. My understanding is that this specific coin was issued during an event that celebrated the centennial of the Pocahontas Coalfield. Participants who got the medal could if they so chose, redeem it for 3 dollars of credit during that event. The event was called the Descendants Banquet, and was issued on August 20th, 1983.The obverse is identical to the iconography of the Exhibition Coal mine in Pocahontas Virginia. Of note, the reverse clearly states, NOT good for trade, NOT redeemable, NOT transferable. I did indeed contact ORCO, or rather the casino that bought the ORCO dies in my own research years ago, the dies are gone, or were retired.Additionally, the logo, Original Pocahontas Coal, was indeed used by a now extinct corporate entitity. That specific corporation, Pocahontas Consolidated, became Pocahontas Fuel by ~ 1917 and was again absorbed into the Consolidated Coal Company. The Pocahontas Consolidated stock cert in the Pocahontas Coalfield article is over 100 years old, and was cancelled some 96 years ago. I thought that a medal, meant to be used as a credit at a banquet for people who resided in that coalfield would be appropriate. Please do let me know what other data I can provide.Coal town guy (talk) 13:45, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
