Original – Stitching the Standard by British artist Edmund Leighton, 1911. The painting shows a nameless damsel on the battlements of a medieval castle finishing a standard or pennant with a black eagle on a gold background. In a time of peace the woman has taken her needlework into the daylight away from the bustle of the castle.

Reason

One of the less known paintings. Digitized by Sotheby's before disappearance in another private collection.

• Support - Which is probably redundant at this time, but I do so love to vote. I could totally use that image in my Love and Death in Literature class. Am I correct that is a battle standard? It is unclear (to me) in the composition if it square or not. HullIntegrity^\ talk / 15:17, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Can be also a castle pennant (for display on castle towers, etc). Since the source at Stitching the Standard mentions various titles, my speculation is that Leighton didn't title this painting himself. Brandmeister^talk 17:12, 18 March 2015 (UTC)
