Initial review of the lead
  • I don't like the phrase "Brethren in academia," because it sounds too familiar, like how one member would refer to another member.
  • That second paragraph is killing me. "Brethren" was thrown in to mix up the phrasing of the sentences. I changed it. How does it read now? NYCRuss ☎ 14:51, 17 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Add a comma after "Edgar Fahs Smith"
  • The phrase "given acceptance speeches" could be more clear as "been awarded"
  • The phrase "The world of law has seen..." could be better phrased as "Three Phi Psis have served as..."
  • I'm not sure that PIMCO should be all caps. The article has it as Pimco

  • Should "mayor" in "New York City mayor" be capitalized? I think maybe, since it's a proper title, like President of the United States.

  • The paragraph describing how to become a brother might be too complicated. I have a hard time following it. Isn't the distinction between undergraduate members and alumni self evident?
  • This is where another opinion helps. I understand everything in there perfectly well, but I'm a Phi Psi. The distinction between an "undergraduate member" and an "alumni" member should be self evident, but it is not always that cut and dry. We allow graduate students to be actives, in which case they would be classified as an "undergraduate member" even though they are not undergraduates. Also, if an undergraduate transfers to another school with a Phi Psi chapter, but does not transfer his membership, he would be an alumnus, and not an undergraduate member, even though he is an undergraduate and a member.   • I notice that quite a few individuals are listed multiple times. I don't know what the standard convention is (the FL criteria looks to be silent on this), but when I was working on my own recent FLC, I only listed each alumni once, usually in whatever field they were best known for. These guys appear multiple times, with possibly some more duplicates:

  • Support (for the things I looked at) - The things that I checked looked good, like the lead, the construction of the list, the sources, and the images. I did not check the notability text or whether the sources actually said what they were supposed to, so I can't speak to those things.   • Describing what a colony is I think clutters things up, just link colony.

  • What does "active" mean?
  • Any member who is a full time student at the host institution in which he was initiated, or to which he has transferred. Grad students have the option of taking alumni or active status. In Phi Kappa Psi, the terms "active member" and "undergraduate" member are used interchangeably, and this can be a source of confusion. It might be better to drop "undergraduate" and just use "active." NYCRuss ☎ 18:40, 18 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • That makes sense, as long as it's clarified in the article. :)
  • "An undergraduate member is active with a chapter, and a full-time enrolled student in that chapter's host institution at the undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate level; all others are alumni" I assumed that by an undergraduate member you meant somebody who does not have a graduate or post-graduate degree nor are pursuing one, thus the term undergraduate. My sorority considers anybody with an undergraduate degree pursuing a graduate degree to be an alumni. If this is not the same it needs to be clarified since it's rather confusing.
  • Hopefully my response just above this comment clarifies this somewhat. Woodrow Wilson, for example, joined Phi Kappa Psi as a law student at Virginia, and then transferred his membership to Johns Hopkins where he earned his Ph.D. He was a chapter president at both.   • After reading it again I think that the first part is what is making it awkward. I would suggest removing the first sentence, perhaps the second sentence as well, and doing something similar to this "which the initiate, or member, is known as a brother".

  • It is also using that number for the 13th edition, and it lists the 14th edition as being the 1992 edition, although printed in 1998. I don't trust that number. Periodicals - changing "contribution" to "title" will get rid of the double commas, it will also fix the formatting and put the article title in quotes (journal names should be italicized and articles that appear within the journal should be in quotations).

  • I get problems in Firefox/XP and Safari/OS X with several tables actually, it's related to the "notability" column. If it doesn't fill the whole column, then the col itself foreshortens.   • Good, all col widths the same, just now have a bit of a problem with bags of whitespace at the end of each section with multiple images. I assume your resolution is quite low, mine, around 1000 pixels wide, shows that Jackson Turner's image has no table at all next to it, nor Scheider, nor Schurz, the last six congressmen etc etc...   • Quick comment – Lead looks okay to me, with the exception of this one sentence: "In academia, Phi Psis are among over a dozen university presidents...". I would hope that all of them are/were Phi Psis, or they wouldn't be relevant to this list. Some restructuring of the sentence is all that will be required to fix this.   • Comment I would move Judge Advocate Generals in the lead to either the front or back of that sentence. As it stands currently the sentence reads "dozens of generals and admirals (general titles, not people) including [specific person], JAGs, [specific person], [specific person]." That order seems a bit confusing to me as JAGs don't really fit with the "dozens of generals... including" sentence order." Maybe put it in it's own sentence entirely.
