Wikipedia:Editor review/Reaper Eternal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reaper Eternal (talk · contribs · count) I have been editing Wikipedia for over 1 year now, but I really only started editing in earnest two months ago. Initially, my introduction to Wikipedia was rather rocky, as I complained about the "meta:Don't be a dick" spam on somebody's talk page. I had thought that it was swearing, and ended up getting warned about violating WP:NPA. After that, I disappeared for a couple months, returning occasionally to revert vandalism that I ran across with the "undo" button. A couple months ago, I unwittingly violated WP:DRC once and got reported to WP:ANI about it. (The thread was speedily closed by an administrator.) I also got my Twinkle edits stomped on by a Huggle user and got worried because I was warned for vandalism (the user did realize his mistake).

Now I have now gotten over 6000 edits, of which around half are to article space. I initially worked at reverting vandalism with Twinkle, and, after around 1000 edits, I ran into an incident where an IP had vandalized an article using the "pending submissions" protection several times in a row. (This article was 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season.) Misinformation about the names of the hurricanes had also been inserted previously. Another IP was correcting the misinformation. With only "undo" and Twinkle, I could not effectively fix the problem. This led to my requests for 'rollback' and 'reviewer' privileges. I then was able to use Huggle, which I have acquired about another 2000 edits on as of today. I have made around 54 reports to WP:AIV, both with huggle and with Twinkle. Questions

  1. What are your primary contributions to Wikipedia? Are there any about which you are particularly pleased? Why?
In addition to vandalism fighting, I also worked at patrolling new pages and finding bad new articles. With the exception of one village stocks-quality mistake, virtually every one of my CSD requests has passed. This has resulted in my having over 200 deleted edits. I have also made a couple requests for oversight after finding personal information in some of the new pages.
I also work at WP:UAA, reporting blatant violations of username policy. I am also active in the account creation process, and may eventually request 'accountcreator' privileges if I end up running into the account creation limit.
A month ago, I joined my first WikiProjects, the Guild of Copy Editors and Citation Cleanup. I have since copyedited over 125,000 words for their November backlog elimination drive. I have also copyedited a list to help it become a Featured List, and I have copyedited another article to help it become a Good Article.
I regularly click "Random Article" and fix the citation issues that show up.
In terms of my own noted content contribution, I have created three DYKs, and intend to make more. Recently, I nominated my first Good Article, Worlebury Camp.
I am a relatively poor HTML programmer, though I can do a little, as my userpage shows.
I have also joined the Great Blacklog Drive, as is evidenced by my userpage. I eliminated the entire 2007 backlog of "Articles with minor POV problems" and am just starting work on the 2008 backlog.
As you may see from this, most of my content contributions are in maintenance, cleanup, and defense of Wikipedia. I do intend on creating more articles.
  2. Have you been in editing disputes or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future? If you have never been in an editing dispute, explain how you would respond to one.
Most of the stress I have undergone was very early in my Wikipedia work, before I knew any policies. I had no knowledge of what was good or wasn't, so I tended to make mistakes. Nowadays, I know that when people warn me for something, it is not a threat of blocking, but an attempt to show me the correct policies.
I also regularly get editors who take an interest in inserting "because I am a fag" after various sentences on my userpages. Others create user accounts entitled FvckReaperEternal or Reaper Eternal is Stoopid and insert "pedobears" onto my userpage and make the tabs 10,000 pixels high. (This is the source of a number of RevDel'd edits on my userpages.) Still others create sockpuppets to insert nonsense on my userpages. All this does not bother me in the least, since I can just hit "rollback" and revert all the damage.
I have never been involved in any edit wars, and do not wish to be involved in one. I do not feel very strongly about content I create, and am willing to take criticism and deletion of my articles. (There was an AfD of Antimatter comet, which I wrote, and I was willing to let it be deleted without creating a big stink or getting upset over it.) If, by some chance, I found I was just reverting an edit I did not like, I would create a new thread on the article's talk page and deal with it there. If the other editor was unwilling, I would let the disputed content stand his way and give him time to cool down. I would then discuss the issue on his talk page. (Obvious exceptions include: blatant vandalism, negative unsourced BLP content, and things of that sort. I once reverted an article 5+ times because vandalism was repeatedly getting inserted, and eventually an admin semiprotected the page to halt the vandalism.)
I have made one request for temporary full protection of a page because of a massive edit war by other users, and it was granted.

  • I see a hardworking dedicated and enthusiastic editor who really cares about Wikipedia. And don't worry about early mistakes, everyone makes them. Best advice I can give you is to Keep learning!! Take in as much knowledge about Wikipedia as you can, read lots of essays, get involved in Village pump discussions, a broad background in diverse areas of Wikipedia gives you the confidence you need to tackle any issues you may confront. I foresee many more barnstars in your future and quite possibly a little mop icon on your userpage ;) Awesome work on the Great Backlog Drive! -- œ 14:33, 1 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
