IBen[edit]

IBen (talk · contribs · count) Hello. I have been working on Wikimedia for a couple of months now and I would like some feedback on how I've been doing. I'd especially like suggestions on how I can do better. iBendiscuss 02:30, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Questions

  1. What are your primary contributions to Wikipedia? Are there any about which you are particularly pleased? Why?
I have worked quite a bit on the Google Quick Search Box and also added quite a bit to the mobile section of the Pandora Radio article. I do quite a bit of new article patrol (see second question) and deal a lot with IP users, vandals, and newbies. One case of that work is with User:Sideards on the Cosmic Puffin Festival page. I helped the user add refs, fix grammar, make the article more encyclopedic, etc. User:Sideards says "It has been a very steep learning curve for me and I was helped by iBen who made sure I didn't end up with my page being deleted. Thank you iBen. " [1] I am part of several WikiProjects and work on articles there. I particularly like wikification. In addition, I added quite a bit to Catalina State Park, Tonto Natural Bridge and more. I participate in Commons, especially adding photos to Wikipedia articles. I am proud to have over 1600 edits and the number is growing rapidly. Also, I have the Rollbacker flag and look forward to using that to help Wikipedia.
  2. Have you been in any disputes over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
When you work with new articles and deletion, you are in a very touchy subject. I am a new page patroller and most new pages I mark for speedy deletion. Unfortunately, I have made some mistakes. I have marked pages for deletion that were more notable than I thought and specified incorrect explanations for some. However, I have looked over the policies and I am no longer marking things incorrectly.

Reviews

You said, " I am proud to have over 1600 edits and the number is growing rapidly." Do keep in mind that the number of edits is not important, but rather the quality of one's work. From your talk page, I think you need to read the image use policy (if you created an image yourself, there's no point to put it under fair use unless it's copyrighted elsewhere). I see that you are adopting, but I don't know if you are quite ready for that, as with all due respect, you have only recently been requesting a great deal of assistance both with the {{helpme}} template and on IRC. I'm not sure exactly what happened with User talk:Airplaneman#PJTF Resignation, but it seems a bit odd... you were going to resign because of a design complaint? Anyhow, I would suggest much more content work, maybe focusing on improving one article for some time.  fetchcomms 22:31, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In response to Fetchcomms concerns, I agree with him about the number of edits reflecting the quality of work. The issue is that edit counts are a prevalent way of judging a user's contributions. I don't think this is fair; I voiced my concern on the issue of Service Awards where you were supposed to have like 500,000 edits. If you didn't notice, User:Airplaneman and I worked it out. We were both feeling a little frustrated. I mislabeled the image; although no one seems to want to help me relicense it. I agree with you that I should concentrate more on content. I am currently working of Ft. Lowell and appreciate your feedback. Just in the future for Editor Reviews, it might be helpful if you added some positive feedback as well.--iBendiscuss/contribsReplied here? 01:51, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
About the image, I don't see how it's very hard to relicense yourself, just delete the fair use stuff and add a cc or pd template (whichever you choose), or see the image licensing page. Regarding positive feedback, it's good that you've gotten into editing a bit, but I cannot stress how important it is to simply have a full understanding of the policies and guidelines.  fetchcomms 02:46, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'll work on the image. What policies and guidelines do you think would be most helpful for me to look over? If there's something new here, please click the "Replied Here?" button as part of my signature.-- iBendiscuss/contribsReplied here? 03:03, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think the image guidelines, review CSD again (never hurts), and things like WP:NOT are always useful to reread. If you're into AfD, read over how AfD works, and things like the username policy are also very good to know. There's no real specific policy or guideline, just have a good knowledge of all of them  fetchcomms 03:23, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Can only echo Fetchcomms' concerns. You do not fully understand Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, yet you are willing to educate others? Expand your areas of participation, and do more content work. –blurpeace (talk) 23:03, 12 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:SMI. Simulating the MediaWiki interface is strongly discouraged. –blurpeace (talk) 03:08, 14 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
