Wikipedia:Editor review/How do you turn this on

How do you turn this on (talk · contribs) Hi. I just failed (expected) an RfA, and was told it was a good idea to come here for feedback on my editing. Adminship is probably a long way off, but this doesn't put me off editing. I've had a great time so far on Wikipedia. I've written a GA and improved many others. I'd like to get some idea of how to help more "behind the scenes". Thanks. how do you turn this on 22:13, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

20 November update: I thought I'd reopen this, since some users have recently been criticizing my actions, and would like to get more of a view on this, and my edits since August. – How do you turn this on (talk) 23:06, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Editorofthewiki (talk · contribs) Hi Hdytto (if you don't mind me calling you that). I really think you're doing splendid. Writing a GA in your first month of being registered is something not many users (myself included) have done. I have nothing wrong with minor edits (I'm horrible at Diffs) as long asyou balance them with major ones, which you clearly do. I can't believe you have actually reviewed a GA in your short experiance! While I can't judge very well as you have only about 1000 edits, you seem like a pretty civil user to boot. Try to write a WP:DYK and (later) an WP:FA. While I could pretty much care less about edit summaries, you will be badgered at your next RFA for not using them as much as "the community" decides you should. You also stated at your RFA that as an admin, you would be active in the deletion area. I can't say I'm very much active in that area, but I have great respect for those who are. While I can't see if you've had any CSDs as a non admin, in XFDs (which are WP:AFD, WP:MFD, WP:IFD, etc.). In conclusion, you are a net positive to the project, and you only need a bit more experiance before you should try for an RFA. --I'm an Editorofthewiki[citation needed] 14:44, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Husond (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA) Hello How do you turn this on (did you choose your username after my favorite cheat on Age of Empires?), and thank you for submitting an editor review. I thought I should provide a review after reading what you told SchfiftyThree after his sadly unsuccessful RfA- "I thought your answers were fine". Well, they were not, they were actually a good example of how not to answer RfA questions. If you would like to become an admin, you will have to understand why. So I've decided to join in your review and give some advice. So... first recommendation: edit summaries. Lack of edit summaries can be quite a nuisance, as it prevents other editors from immediately learning what you did on each edit when looking at the page history. Please consider activating the "Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary" option in your preferences. Now, adminship is not necessarily a long way off, but in order to become an administrator you must be involved in administrative activities. If you just like to edit content, then you do not need the admin tools for your very appreciated contributions. If you would like to be more involved with admin-oriented tasks and eventually become an admin, I recommend:
  • participate in WP:XFD discussions, particularly WP:AFD (watch and learn the arguments users evoke for keeping or deleting something);
  • learn the criteria for speedy deletion, and start patrolling WP:NPP. You may start tagging articles for speedy deletion after having fully grasped the criteria and monitored how other users do;
  • pay a few visits to WP:RFPP in order to understand which requests for protection are to be accepted and which are to be declined;
  • fight vandals! Do it until you've learned the various types of vandalism, sequences of warnings that vandals should be given, and when should they be reported to WP:AIV
  • Always be civil and friendly with other users. Generally, they'll be civil and friendly too and make your Wikipedia experience more enjoyable;
  • check WP:5P and WP:LOP to make sure you're an expert on policies;
  • wait a couple of months between RfAs;
  • keep up the good work! :-)

Those would be my recommendations. Follow them and you should have no problems in becoming an admin soon. But don't let them interfere with the great work you already do on Wikipedia! Feel free to contact me should you need assistance or advice! Regards, Húsönd 22:11, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Yes, I did name myself for the Cobra car on AOE! :D OK, maybe I missed some things said, but what I read was ok. I'll take your word for it the answers weren't fine.
    • Thanks for the advice re. summaries. I'll check out that feature.
    • I guess i'll consider voting in deletion discussions as well. However, I have already tagged a few pages for deletetion. Maybe I'll do it more often.
    • I'm not particularly interested in "fighting" with people, though I've done some reverting on some articles already. Never reported anyone though. I don't think it interests me as much.
    • I've tried my hardest!
    • Will do!
    • I wasn't considering having another one until someone offered.
    • Thanks!

Questions

  1. Of your contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
    Without question, my GA, Jeanne Calment.
    20 November update: I worked solidly on Mark Speight, which unfortunately failed FAC twice, but it's my best work by far. I've also written several DYKs, a few new articles, and worked on lots of others. As of late, I've not had easy internet access, which makes article work for me difficult, so my mainspace work may have gone down as of late. My computer is (supposed) to be fixed sometime this week, so fingers crossed.
  2. Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
    I had a minor one on the review page of a GA I was reviewing, when the nominator was less than polite towards me. As in my answer on my RfA, I'd either invite others for comment, or walk away if it caused me stress (which it didn't). how do you turn this on 22:15, 25 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    20 November update: No stress at all, but I have been annoyed at a few editors' actions in various places, and let them know about it (good example would be Ling.Nut's canvassing of Mark Speight's FAC in a very negative light, and comparing it to a start class article.) I was a bit upset obviously, but moved on with things.
  3. What topics or areas of wikipedia are you most interested in editing? Do these reflect your real life hobbies/studies well?
    I like all sorts of things really. I'm very interested in things like conspiracy theories (stuff like aliens, mysterious deaths, government secrets etc). I also love history (particularly Western), linguistics, interesting buildings... that's just off the top of my head. On Wiki, I haven't really contributed to those areas a great deal, but will do with time perhaps. I mostly make minor fixes (such as typo fixing and fixing wiki-links).
