- Description
- Does filter 194 identify any new page which includes the substrings "Michael" or "Jackson" as "Possible Michael Jackson vandalism", as its record of false positives [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] indicates? If so, the filter would be ripe for immediate decommissioning. Indeed, the filter appears to be malfunctioning to such an extent that it flags new pages with no discernible connection to Michael Jackson at all [6] [7] [8]; a flood of false positives renders the abuse filter feature useless, as well as insulting new editors who may perceive that they are being accused of "vandalism" in page histories. - The correct procedure is:
- Move the page to the proper title, or list it at WP:Requested moves if you can't.
- If the page is relatively new, and the old title is an "implausible typo", then tag the redirect with a {{db-redirtypo}} tag.

- The filter triggered because the overall change in the article's size as a result of your edit was very high and in the negative direction. The filter is unable to distinguish between removing large sections of an article and weeding out a large amount of unnecessary text. The bottom line, then, is that this was not a false positive, as you did remove content - you just put it back in in a way that was considerably shorter. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:06, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
- To clarify further, if you know your edit is constructive, ignore the warnings and hit save. This particular filter will never be terribly accurate, and so it will never prevent you from editing. It's intention is to advise new users that there may be concerns from real editors later if their edit is not constructive. Hersfold (t/a/c) 19:09, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

- Expletives
- Description
- I was replacing "sh-t" and "fuc-" with the correct words (since the article is about expletives and so-called "bad language"). I felt that censorship here detracted from the article (as it does everywhere else), given that such words are cadent to it. Since this was all I changed, it is reasonable that a swear filter caught me and assumed I was vandalizing the page, but it was a legit edit.

- Hans Scholl - biography
- Description
- changing incorrect, outdated biographical information and updating it with the newest scholarly research, adding full citations to several scholarly sources.PLEASE NOTE: the citation to Dr. Newborn's article via his webpage is not advertising, but necessary because these findings are contained in an essay written in 2006 but not published yet in a book, magazine or newspaper, and only available as a pdf download via this site. The essay had originally been intended for incorporation into the updated edition as an "afterword" to Newborn's co-authored book of 2006, but could not be included because of the publisher's urgency in keeping to a drastically shortene,d publication schedule (2 and 1/2 months), which had reduced space for the intended Afterword. However, it has been distributed in booklet form since early March 2006 through lectures given nationally and internationally, as well as through attachment postings to scholarly listservs. THe essay in this way has been made widely available to scholars and the public. The reference is necessary to establish the copyright date of Newborn's research and written findings, which provided major breakthroughs in the history of the White Rose, particulary answers to long-sought questions about why the group chose its name (White Rose), and why brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl transformed from being avid Nazi Hitler Youth leaders into outraged anti-Nazi resisters. Dr. Newborn--Ph.D. with Distinction, University of Chicago, Founding Historian and Curator of New York's Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Jewish Heritage--is an expert on the White Rose and co-author of a widely known and respected book about the entire White Rose movement, including the role of Hans Scholl within it. The book is cited by many scholars, readers and wiki editors/authors of entries relating to the White Rose. See bio of Jud Newborn on wiki and website for credentials.

- No, it's an abuse filter, and since my changes didn't constitute abuse, it's a false positive. I didn't engage in "Talk page blanking by unregistered user" because I removed autosigned garbage from a minimal talk page; I didn't blank it--I left the wikiproject header in place. So at a minimum the check to see if it was really a case of talk page blanking failed. Want some more ideas? Inspect the edit summary or the old page wikitext and make judgments from that. Or factor in the case that the old page size is small, and/or it contains junk. In short: bend over backwards to Wikipedia:Assume good faith, even for a change made by an editor who isn't logged in. Apparently I tripped Filter 30, "large deletion from article by new editors". It hasn't prevented me from making the edits, but I have been "warned" according to the abuse filter log ([12]). What exactly does this mean? Thank you in advance to anyone who answers. --AfterFX (talk) 01:44, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
- Large deletions are usually acts of vandalism (more than 95% of the time). By having a warning we find that >50% of the childish vandals will abandon the edit, which leaves less to cleanup for the rest of us. If your edit was well-intentioned, just ignore the warning. Incidentally, filters targeting childish vandalism are automatically turned off for editors once they have a certain degree of experience, so if you keep editing you are unlikely to see this issue in the future. - Trying to clean up the redundancy of "the penalty section was removed in 1990." As you'd guess, this article is controversial, written by Mormons and people who hate Mormons and few else. So the latter party always sneaks in many references to the assertion that previous to 1990 the ceremony had a hand signal in it that apparently derived from the equivalent of "cross my heart and hope to die, stick a needle in my eye." There's no image where I'm trying to delete.

'Roobie Breastnut is the founder of Party Porn music for B films and erotica films such as "The Gun," which the film made it to the 2003 Montreal Film Festival in Canada. From there, Roobie Breastnut's music has been reoccurring in Jim Wynorski's erotica films such as "The Lust Connection," "The Witches Of Breastwick," and most recently, "Cleavagefield," playing on HBO. Ironically enough, over twenty years prior from producing music for Jim Wynorski's films, Roobie had played a prostitute main extra in a film directed by Jim himself called, "Big Bad Mama Part 2." However during those twenty years, Roobie is well known in the Burlesque industry for re jumping the vaudeville craft. Building drivable props like "The Pooper Scooter" a drivable toilet. And a "Boob Mobile" driven at the old Exotic World out in Helendale. Roobie Breastnut is also a certified clown, trained by a master boss clown. And has streamed the first 60 minute movie ever to be played on ifilm.com'Italic text'

- I would argue that this is not a false positive, since you did in fact remove the reference templates/tags; while I understand you were being constructive, in removing the {{reflist}} template (etc.), you've made it a little more difficult to tell when references do get added if someone forgets to put it back in. - This was mostly appropriate. What happened is that you added a spot to list references (with a <references/> tag) even though there was already such a spot further down the page (a {{Reflist}} tag). When you tried to remove the duplicate, the abuse filter got confused. Perhaps a new rule is needed to prevent the duplication in the first place. —Wknight94 (talk) 20:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

- What you were doing
- I deleted a <ref> but was replacing it with another <ref>, replacing the same one and adding another one. Because I deleted the one, I was not allowed to edit the page.
- Your edits moved the references that were in the article to a position below the <references/> tag. That tag automatically collects all references that are mentioned in the article so far. By moving them to the other location you caused the tag to no longer recognize them. So the filter was right in warning you, though perhaps it should make it clearer the edit was wrong for a different reason. - Mgm|(talk) 17:48, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

- I would like to report a false negative AND a false positive. I think filter 32 ought to have triggered on my first edit, thus disallowing the edit and saving me some embarrassment. In addition, when I deleted the nonsense edit, I triggered a filter for the removal of the bad edits! ... w00t for filter 30, I guess.

- Thanks for the report. For future reference, the first edit mentioned is here - Mgm|(talk) 11:46, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- The addition wasn't large enough to trip filter 32, the threshold for the filter could probably be turned down safely, but still not to that level. The edit only added ~14,000 bytes to the article, which isn't an entirely unreasonable size change, as it only increased the article size by about 50%. On a larger article, that would barely be a blip. Mr.Z-man 13:23, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I've got an idea of a filter that would trip in these circumstance and still leave reasonable edits alone. It's just the question whether the regex flavor we're using allows it. I'll try to build the filter shortly and report back. - Mgm|(talk) 17:44, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
- I've designed filter 125 to try to avoid such edits in the future. It is now in testing. - Mgm|(talk) 08:43, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Neither your IP address nor the article title appear in the filter log. Were you logged on under another name? Did you mean to point to the disambiguation page or a specific article listed there? =- Mgm|(talk) 09:17, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

- Big dumb idiot
- Description
- This isn't really a true false positive but it would be better if, in this case, an attempted save after recent delete triggers MediaWiki:Deletedwhileediting instead of the abuse filter. I was adding a db-vand (the page was still there when I was in the editing screen) but the page was already deleted after I tried to save. I know this probably isn't that big of a deal but it would be better if Deletedwhileediting is shown rather than a possible abuse message in such a situation.

- BTW, the "save again" didn't work at first (might have been a javascript/cookie issue, or an issue with adding more details to the edit summary--I didn't spend any time trying to figure that out (67.100.125.197 (talk) 22:41, 26 March 2009 (UTC))
- Got harassed a second time by Fairfax Stone changes (don't know what the problem was this time--check them out if you care). This is getting really annoying. (67.100.125.197 (talk) 22:56, 26 March 2009 (UTC))
Source: replacing duplicate/similar references with a link to a named ref, it <ref>Blah blah</ref> → <ref name=foo/>. Filter needs to be modified to account for this. In the meantime, keep up the good work! Happy‑melon 23:30, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- I and Dragons flight have tweaked the filter that you were tripping, so it should not trigger on the action you were performing (legitimately replacing a duplicate ref with a named ref). Let us know if you still have problems. Happy‑melon 23:57, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
- Actually in the logs he tripped both 61 and 79. I believe I've now also patched the other one. Our apologies. Dragons flight (talk) 00:10, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- The code itself was fine, but it didn't consider the posibility that the article could contain duplicates to begin with. Removing duplicates is now excluded as a filter trigger. - Mgm|(talk) 09:16, 27 March 2009 (UTC)
- This comment could be a reference to the false positives I received attempting to re-apply some of the changes to "Fairfax Stone" (Fairfax Stone Historical Monument State Park) mentioned above but reverted by someone. 72.244.204.23 (talk · contribs) 09:24, 27 March 2009 (UTC).

- Description
- The previous reporting of the legal case about the Balen report was much out of date and needed substantial replacement. Also there was repetition concerning "the independent panel's report". The separate section headed the Balen report became superfluous and was deleted by way of clean up. I have now deleted less duplicate material and left the page therefore in need of clean up but have avoided the filter and effected my edit.

- You triggered filter 18 (test type edits) because you added [http://www.example.com link title] to the article. In this case you should have replaced 'link title' with the real title of the link. Ruslik_Zero 14:10, 6 June 2009 (UTC)

- DCF77
- Description
- Trying to clarify the explanation of the DCF77 phase shift keying, I replaced "A 0 chip causes a +13° phase advance, while a 1 ship causes a −13° phase lag." with "During 0 chips the carrier phase is advanced +13° phase, while during 1 chips it is retarded −13°." I suspect the word "retarded" triggered the vandalism filter, but this is the technically correct usage, from which the insult is derived. In any case, I want to emphasize that repeated 0 bits do not cause repeated phase advances, but rather the phase is held at +13° as long as the 0 bits last, then changed −26° to −13° when the next 1 bit comes along.

- There really isn't a lot we can do to address this. A new editor deletes a lot of text... most of the time that is bad and the warning is deserved. The good news is that the filter in question will turn off once your account is a few days older and you are no longer "new". Dragons flight (talk) 22:02, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
