Copyright investigations (manual article tagging)[edit]
  • Liana Alexandra (history · last edit · rewrite) from http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/public/. A previous version of the article exists which is not a copyright violation. However, there is a disagreement about whether it should be used. See the article's talk page. There's a scan from a print version of the Grove article in question linked in the talk page here. Article cleaned by Newconsonance. The condemnable interventions of the plagiarist Biruitorul (fraudulently copied texts from Grove - <http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/public/>) were removed. Replacement with a previous version of the article - which is not a copyright violation. No remaining infringement.--Newconsonance (talk) 14:50, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The template is still in place. The participants in the discussion need to have an uninvolved third party or parties to make a decision on the infringement. Pkeets (talk) 06:12, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I've restructured and rewritten this article just to be on the safe side. The copyright violation was allegedly from Grove Music Online. However, while there is some perhaps overly close paraphrasing in places, it was not in my view at the level of a copyright violation. Hence, re-added some of that material. I've also referenced this article to several highly reliable sources. Further comments left at Talk:Liana Alexandra. Voceditenore (talk) 18:07, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the text in question was added on 31 March 2010 (See http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Interoperability&diff=353227292&oldid=353215875), whereas source is dated March 8 2011 --Jerome Potts (talk) 22:08, 30 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it's pretty hinky looking, and in fact I thought I had found an older source, but it turned out that the document (hosted as a Microsoft Word document online) copied from sections not added by that IP. (see [1].) I can't find any evidence to exclude reverse copying here, and given the relative dates of publication have to close this without action. Please feel free to note your copyright concerns on the talk page of the article with {{cv-unsure}}. Thanks! --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:37, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1.) Original Text (from Grove): "Nichifor, Şerban (b Bucharest, 25 Aug 1954). Romanian composer. After studying the cello with Serafim Antropov at the Bucharest Academy, graduating in 1972, he took private composition lessons with Stroe and Walter Mihai Kleper. Nichifor continued his composition studies in Darmstadt and Breukelen with Ton de Leeuw (1978, 1980) and in Munich with Celibidache. Musical secretary of the George Enescu Philharmonic, he has also taught in the chamber music class at the Bucharest Academy, where he took the doctorate in music (1995) and in theology (1996)." 2.) Biruitorul's plagiarism (Nota Bene, without the quotes!): Born in Bucharest, Nichifor studied cello at the city's Music Academy, finishing in 1972. Following private composition lessons with Aurel Stroe and Walter Mihai Kleper, he continued studying privately in Darmstadt and Breukelen with Ton de Leeuw in 1978 and 1980, and with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich. He has served as musical secretary of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra and has taught chamber music at his alma mater, which awarded him doctorates in music (1995) and theology (1996).

  • Obvious plagiarism (II/II):

1.) Original Text (from Grove): "He has experimented with new techniques of sound organization and structure, notably in his opera Domnişoara Cristina, which includes tape recordings. His eclectic compositonal language extends to jazz elements in his Third and Fourth Symphonies. In his compositions after 1990 he has developed a simplified style employing themes reminiscent of Byzantine chant." 2.) Biruitorul's plagiarism (Nota Bene, without the quotes!): His work features experimentation in new techniques of organizing and structuring sound. For instance, his opera Domnişoara Cristina includes tape recordings. His diverse repertoire includes elements of jazz in his Third and Fourth Symphonies. Since 1990, his work is simpler in style, with themes recalling Byzantine chant. Quod Erat Demonstrandum!

Comment. This article has survived an AfD, during which it became obvious that the original article was in fact a promotional piece without proper sourcing. Before closing the AfD, the article was rewritten (in good faith) based on this source (which may actually be the alleged copyvio source, not the initial link that contains nothing similar to the article content). The SPA Newconsonance keeps trying by all possible means to revert to the previous promotional version (in which he seems to be having some personal stake), and has now resorted to personal attacks, after he started to insist on calling long standing wikipedian Biruitorul a "plagiarist". So this copyvio report looks like an attempt of gaming the system towards preserving a (self-)promotional Wikipedia article identified as such in the aforementioned AfD. Still, should Biruitorul's attempt to preserve the article be considered a copyvio (there appears to be, indeed, some paraphrasing there —I'm not sure if it's close enough to be a copyvio), then the article should probably either be speedily deleted, or go through a second AdD (after all, multiple reliable sources are needed for notability).- Andrei (talk) 15:12, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
