The result of the discussion was: reverse merge. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:25, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Duplicate category. If the decision is to keep the "educators" name, then we should merge and then rename, given that the other category is a decade older Mason (talk) 14:42, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per the parent category, Category:Musicians by band, "categories should not be created when only one member has an article." In this case, no member from the band has an article (albeit there was one but it was recently redirected). StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 18:26, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, as creator. This clearly goes against the spirit of the category, which is that it's for bands with multiple members with articles. (Which makes me wonder why I created it.)--Mike Selinker (talk) 23:21, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Western Samoa[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename/merge/delete. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:53, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Even though the name Western Samoa was used until 1997, all other categories after 1961 use "Samoa", see 20th-century establishments in Samoa and 20th century in Samoa. – Fayenatic London 13:16, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment That makes me wonder if the other categories have it wrong. Would love to hear from someone more familiar in the topic area whether "Samoa" was in common usage during this period for the country, excluding American Samoa. (I'm sure it was in use to describe the archipelago). - RevelationDirect (talk) 15:44, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not an expert by any means, but a look on the National Library of New Zealand's Papers Past website (NZ and Samoa are quite connected, even after independence in 1962) seems to suggest that "Samoa" was used to refer to Western Samoa reasonably often. ― novov (t c) 03:42, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename for Now per WP:C2C since these categories should match the the rest of the adjacent branches of the category tree. No objection to a later broader nomination though. - RevelationDirect (talk) 22:47, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Transgender prostitutes[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: no consensus. This needs a broader discussion. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:55, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Possibly due as a broader topic, as well as being the preferred terminology in newer sources. GnocchiFan (talk) 20:43, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not all sex workers are prostitutes. Apokrif (talk) 20:48, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, but all prostitutes are sex workers, which is why I am proposing the merge that way around. I mention that this is the preferred terminology as in many newer sources, trans prostitutes are routinely described as sex workers instead of prostitutes, which may lead to issues in categorisation and WP:OR. But that's just an additional consideration - the main thing here is that is this a big enough topic to split into two separate but interrelated categories at this point? (Personally, I am on the fence on this, but proposing the merge to seek further editor input). - GnocchiFan (talk) 20:50, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • If prostitutes are called sex workers nowadays then Wikipedia's sex workers categories are too broad. This requires a broader discussion, it is not specifically a transgender topic. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:54, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See the above - I only mentioned that due to possible overlap, the terms are not synonymous. My main concern is that the trans-specific category may not be large enough to have this level of subcategorisation, which may not apply to the other sex worker categories. GnocchiFan (talk) 21:02, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • There are 5 articles and 2 redirects in the category, that is usually considered (just) sufficient. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:06, 9 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Dutch Caribbean[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: withdrawn. (non-admin closure) Omnis Scientia (talk) 08:55, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: I speedied this to "Dutch diaspora in the Caribbean" per previous Cfd but it reversed for some reason. While I initially preferred the rename to Category:Dutch diaspora in the Caribbean to match all in its parent categories I realize now that most of these places are still under Dutch control so I'm not sure if this would count as a "diaspora". Omnis Scientia (talk) 15:33, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The main article is also Dutch Caribbean but as the article explains it is a sort of a historical region, no longer officially existing as a unified polity but the term still being used in common language. Argueably the whole tree might be deleted in order to just keep Dutch Caribbean article. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:15, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle, would you be in favor of creating a diaspora category for Dutch Caribbean, like there is for Category:British diaspora in the Caribbean that would have subcats on Dutch Caribbean culture and people of Dutch descent living beyond as well as within Dutch-controlled lands in the region? Omnis Scientia (talk) 18:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • If any next step, it should be nominating the entire tree in a fresh discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 22:50, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep, per main article Dutch Caribbean. This is a valid category tree among the larger Category:Dependent territories to gather all Dutch territories, past and present, with different statuses, in the Caribbean region. That's a totally different topic from Dutch diaspora in.., and yet another sign that Fooian Barian adjectives are a very wrong way to name categories for diasporas. Category:Captive people[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 17:48, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: "Captive" is so vague as to clearly violate WP:NONDEF. In the real life version it could be seen as an invitation for biased category additions based on one's subjective interpretation of what a "captive" is. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 20:40, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, this is not as vague or "non-defining" as you claim. Both of these categories are simple in definition, and it is more of a defacto container category. What all of these subcategories within have in common are just people who were legally or illegally captured by other people. There is nothing confusing about the scale or scope of them. AHI-3000 (talk) 20:46, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I should note that there is a specific template to indicate something's a container category, which this wasn't marked with. However, even so, I don't think it is large enough to require such a category and would qualify as a narrow intersection. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 20:59, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Dimadick: What do you think about this nomination? AHI-3000 (talk) 20:25, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose I agree with AHI-3000. Dimadick (talk) 04:47, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Fictional professors[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Fictional academics. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge, we categorize by occupation (academic), not by title (professor). For real life, Category:Professors does not exist either. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:02, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • No objection as category creator. BD2412 T 18:54, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia CD Selection[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:20, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Delete this and all its subcats for the same reason as Template:WP1.0. This serves no purpose. Category:Wikipedia CD Selection-GAs‎ is completely identical to Category:GA-Class_articles except that it does not contain subcats. There's no argument for historical value. It's anachronistic because this contains all current GAs and none of the former GAs. Category:Wikipedia CD Selection - People only contains one entry-not useful! Schierbecker (talk) 23:07, 17 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Can't find the link at the moment, but the total list of pages that was selected was put on a page when relevant categories were last discussed, so deleting the categories shouldn't lose too much. Perhaps Category:Wikipedia CD Selection could be moved to Wikipedia:Wikipedia CD Selection/Categories, the others have nothing to preserve. CMD (talk) 08:27, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Dominican Republic percussionists. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:19, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Category is explained as being by instrument, but parented as "by nationality". Currently only contains 1 player, and I checked what-links-here on Tambora (Dominican drum) without finding other pages where this skill appears WP:DEFINING. Broadening its scope to be clearly a nationality category will probably be more useful. – Fayenatic London 15:37, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: split between Category:YouTube channels by year of launch and Category:YouTube channels by year of closure. (non-admin closure) HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 00:07, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Such categories are usually split. MSMST1543 (talk) 02:42, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Splitting makes sense, launch and closure are quite different things. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:41, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yeah definitely in the 8/9 years since I created the cat there have definitely been many channels closed. Might need some clarification though. Some of these channels are technically not "closed" as in deleted or terminated, but just inactive (some are tied to eponymous series that have ended), but does that count as closed? (question for other editors, though imo something like that isn't necessarily "closed"). Soulbust (talk) 22:13, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • That is a fair question. Maybe the closures subcategories should be deleted for that reason. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:37, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category:International universities[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename/merge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 18:04, 2 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: duplicate categories with no clear difference. Rename the first category per its own parents, and as it contains both universities and colleges. The difference between a university and a college is anyway not consistent from one educational system to another. Place Clichy (talk) 01:22, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom, "multinational" appears to coincide with "international" in this case. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:18, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. Not the same. "Cat:International Universities" are bodies which may have a single owner in multiple locations. (Like Northeastern University. Based in Boston, but also in Toronto, Ontario, Canada etc..) That might be better as just "Cat:University or College campuses (by location)" The include by country, state, town, city et al.
"Cat:Multinational universities and colleges are schools" which may be owned by multiple governments and thus no any single government may own it anymore than any other. Is far different (Like University of the West Indies.). One is type of governance. One is type of ownership structure. Not an improvement. CaribDigita (talk) CaribDigita (talk) 06:58, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't think so, an international university is defined as funded by the governments of many countries and thereby is controlled by the officials from the government of different countries. Marcocapelle (talk) 12:24, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't think that this difference reflects the way the categories are currently populated, which I assume is the product of honest mistakes. Practically, I don't think either that this difference can be usefully maintained in the long run in the form of two separate categories. Note that universities or colleges established under the governance of several countries will also, most often, have a physical presence in these several countries. You cite the University of the West Indies, but it wasn't in any of these categories until I placed it there yesterday. Place Clichy (talk) 14:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Many of the articles are crematoria and cemeteries so not much merging is needed. All contain 1-2 entries. Note, I removed the lone Nepal category as it didn't fit and is now empty. –Aidan721 (talk) 00:35, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
