Nominator's rationale: delete, Koli people is an ethnicity so you would expect biographies in this category, but there aren't any. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:42, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Comment Category:Koli people needs to be split into biographies (e.g. Parshottambhai Solanki) and other articles (e.g. Koli Christians). –LaundryPizza03 (d) 05:42, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:09, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: "France" didn't exist yet until 987, and the category includes peoples/tribes who dwelled in areas outside the borders of modern France such as the Menapii (northern Belgium / southern Netherlands) and the Vangiones (southwestern Germany). Also, "in" is a better preposition than "of", compare the only item in the category Greeks in pre-Roman Gaul as well as siblings Category:Ancient tribes in the Balkans‎, Category:Ancient tribes in Greece, Category:Ancient tribes in Hungary (perhaps rename that one to "Pannonia" as well?). While we're at it, we might as well rename its child as well. Parent Category:French people by period should be purged, because that is in the Peoply by nationality tree, and there is no "French nationality" before there is a French state in 987. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:59, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • For sure "France" should be replaced by "Gaul", in order to solve anachronism. I do not have a preference between "in" and "of". Marcocapelle (talk) 20:38, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think "of" suggests ownership, or that said peoples were somehow "subjects" of said country, which is another way of misapplying the modern nationality concept to pre-modern times. I think we are interested in location: where did these people live? Not what their legal relationship with said country was. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 19:03, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. They were in Gaul, not of Gaul. Laurel Lodged (talk) 13:01, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Categories refer to the same person. The lead of Henry Cranke Andrews explains that this person's middle name was long thought to be Charles, hence the confusion. Vahurzpu (talk) 16:56, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:OR WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:CROSSCAT. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lists of Celtic clans and Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 July 22#Category:Lists of modern Indo-European tribes and clans for more information. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 15:44, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, neither Scottish nor Irish clans are Celtic clans per se, due to a lot of immigration and assimilation in the course of history. Note that the three articles should be moved to one of the subcategories (or both) before deletion. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:23, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. 2 of them are already in Scottish clans, Sept should be moved to both. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:38, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS: The page Sept is all they seem to have in common, but irony has it that sept is a Germanic word, cognate of Sippe (German), sibbe (Dutch) and sibling (English), not "Celtic". Funny that. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 16:40, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to Category:German chroniclers being Merged into Category:Chroniclers from the Holy Roman Empire (19 July). Take no. #2 after first attempt closed as no consensus on 18 July due to too many options (my mistake as nom). Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 15:07, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SMALLCAT. This category has only 1 entry. Estopedist1 (talk) 17:35, 14 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just delete after I added the only article to Category:Swiss nurses. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:41, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment this gets to the notion of what the Category:Nurses by nationality inclusion criteria are. Is the criteria based on the birth location of the nurse or the working/living location of the nurse? This is currently not a defined matter, though it might be tacitly settled. --User:Ceyockey (talk to me) 01:16, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: manual upmerge. (non-admin closure) Qwerfjkltalk 15:59, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:CROSSCAT WP:OR. This mixes up language families and geography (countries/regions), as well as past and present. E.g. Tribes of Montenegro (Slavic, Albanian, or 'Vlach'), List of Scottish clans (Scottish Gaelic, Scots, or English) and List of Irish clans (Gaelic, or English) appear to be based on a specific country or region (Category:Irish clans is a child of Category:Culture of Ireland; Category:Scottish clans is a child of Category:Social history of Scotland): anyone counts, no matter what language they speak/spoke.
On the other hand, Albanian tribes is apparently primarily based on language, not geography ("in Albania and the southwestern Balkans"... "Some of the tribes are considered extinct because no collective memory of descent has survived (i.e. Mataruga, Rogami etc.) while others became slavicised very early on and the majority of the descendants no longer consider themselves Albanian (i.e. Kuči, Mahine etc.).") So too for most other items in this arbitrarycat, like Kurdish tribes who are divided across many countries and territories and only seem to share a language (family).
Moreover, the category claims to be about "modern" clans and tribes, but most contents are about "historical" tribes and clans which no longer exist. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 14:53, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: manual merge all to Category:15th-century women, etc. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:17, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to CfD "16th-century Turkic women" (Deleted yesterday). Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 13:25, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom, but before deletion we should make sure that the articles stay in the tree of Category:15th-century women etc. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:33, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's actually a good point; the biographies aren't otherwise contained in the women by century tree at the moment. So we would have to Upmerge them all to their grandparents, because parent Xth-century women by nationality is a useless containercat for our purposes here. So I guess Upmerge all to Xth-century women? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:27, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • A number of articles is in that tree anyway, so it should be a manual merge. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:56, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, then I support a Manual upmerge all to Xth-century women. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 17:13, 23 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:CROSSCAT of language families, countries/regions and nationalities. Follow-up to CfD "Celtic culture by country" (Deleted yesterday), "Celtic women" rename & purge (people after 500 CE are no longer called "Celts/Celtic") (27 June 2023), "Chilean people of Germanic descent" (Deleted 7 May 2023), "People of Germanic descent") (Deleted 16 May 2023), and the total deletion of the "People by language family of descent" tree (Deleted 2 June 2023). The result of the discussion was: rename. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:18, 30 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Follow-up to "Celtic women" being renamed to Category:Ancient Celtic women (matching Ancient Celtic women). Per category description: Category for topics on ancient Celtic warfare. For medieval Gaelic warfare, see Gaelic warfare. I've already boldy renamed main article Celtic warfare to Ancient Celtic warfare. As the article indicates, Celtic/Gallic culture assimilated into Roman culture after 50 BCE, but Gaelic warfare was a medieval continuation in Ireland and Britain (and the category description also already said that). Recent precedents confirm "Ancient Celts/Celtic". Compare Early Germanic warfare. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 12:41, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This better describes the lives of these ancient women. There are no empresses regnant in this group. Some were both empresses consort and women regents (in that order, as is common throughout human history). Sofya of Axum and Zarmandukht were both queens consort first and later women regents, but 2 people is not enough for a queens consort by century category, so they have been put in Category:Ancient queens consort. Follow-up to 2nd-century BC women rulers (Split), 3rd-century BC women rulers (Split), and 4th-century BC women rulers (Split). Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 09:42, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT. More generally, I'm wondering whether parent categories Category:Wives of Iranian Shahs by person and Category:Wives of Pahlavi Shahs both suffer as parents of only WP:SMALLCAT categories, and whether all their subcats should be deleted or merged upwards. Could overall be a matter of WP:Overcategorization. Largoplazo (talk) 09:27, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's certainly a case of overcategorisation. I yesterday nominated some related cats which were also created a few days ago, see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 July 21#Category:Persian queens consort. I'm not sure if Deletion is the best option here though. Maybe merge with Category:Iranian queens? What does @Marcocapelle think? Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 09:39, 22 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Background discussion / rationale Nederlandse Leeuw & Marcocapelle here. TL;DR: Unlike in earlier cases, @Marcocapelle and I decided to combine "queens regnant" and "empresses regnant" to "women monarchs" per ancestor Category:Women monarchs to prevent creating SMALLCATs. We also agreed to purge the non-consort Augustae (List of Augustae, Category:Augustae).
