Recording artists[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename all. At this point, I suspect the reason CfD keeps getting backlogged is because of the cumbersome organization; unlike TfD and RfD, CfD log pages are not transcluded onto the main page. Nominator's rationale: This is a follow-up to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2021 October 27#Category:Artists by record label, for consistency with the renamed parent Category:Recording artists by label. – Fayenatic London 20:52, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Girl groups smallcats[edit]

The result of the discussion was: merge all. I checked and each nominated category still contains only one or two pages. – Fayenatic London 22:04, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: merge, all the above currently have only one or two articles. The so-called smallcat exception does not really apply because the tree by nationality is very incomplete anyway. This is follow-up on this earlier discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:10, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: rename per Option B, but no consensus for the elections category.– Fayenatic London 17:31, 23 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Need to have a single name for this territory. Option A Rename & delete as nominated. Option B Reverse name all Cisleithanian categories to "Foo in Empire of Austria (1867–1918)".Laurel Lodged (talk) 12:46, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Option A, please. No Great Shaker (talk) 13:05, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Surely there should be consistency. I don't expect historians to use "Cisleithania" in their common language though, option B is probably more appropriate. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:39, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Option B is slightly better, though I'm not sure either is correct here. Why aren't these merged to just be a single category about Austria-Hungary? User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 18:34, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is a fair point, we seem to be making distinctions between countries that merely existed on paper. We had a similar discussion about Aragon and Castile in the 16th and 17th century after they merged to Spain in practice. For all people except the Hungarians, Austria-Hungary was perceived as one country with a first level administrative division in two parts. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:57, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • That's simply not true. Each part of the Dual Monarchy was equal and separate with their own parliaments and executives. Only the person of the Emperor united both parts. The Aragon and Castile precedent is not relevant here. @Marcocapelle and : The important point for both these nominations is that we have categories that are good and useful but under different names, even though they are about the same entity. Only one name should prevail. I'm not wedded to either name, hence the provision of options A & B. I don't mind which one prevails as long as the dual naming structure is eliminated. Whichever one wins - A or B - then all child categories should follow that usage. Laurel Lodged (talk) 07:58, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Austria-Hungary was a real union with a shared army, shared ambassadors and a shared foreign policy (which were at the time the most defining characteristics of a state). Of course Hungary got its own administrative bodies, but in the 19th century that had little weight for anyone but the Hungarians. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:08, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Option B cis/trans-Leith are obscure terms and should not be used; category-redirects might be appropriate, but I doubt even that is necessary. To me Leith is the port of Edinburgh. It is appropriate to categorise as Hungary/Austria/Bohemia/Moravia/etc according to status with Austria-Hungary, but they had common institutions (called royal and imperial), so that categories for any of these should only be used for matters local to a particular polity. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:54, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Option B is probably more appropriate! --Just N. (talk) 21:40, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: keep (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 07:15, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Redundant category, as the pre-existing Multi-barrel machine guns category is defined as "Rotary, gatling or other multi-barrel machine guns." Loafiewa (talk) 12:55, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

But multi-barrel is not always rotary...? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tatalvit (talkcontribs) 13:08, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For example Billinghurst_Requa_Battery is a multi-barrel non-rotary machine gun. There is also a category Rotary cannon Category:Rotary_cannon (which lists rotary weapons that are not cannons. There are technically rotary machine guns at category Rotary cannon page which would need to be moved to the correct category Rotary machine guns). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tatalvit (talkcontribs) 13:18, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While not all multi-barreled machine guns are rotary, a large number of them are. Per WP:OVERLAPCAT, when two categories have a major overlap, it is better to just have the one category. Loafiewa (talk) 14:46, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To what extent do these two categories overlap? Please specify. If you look at Category:Multi-barrel_machine_guns, majority of entries are not rotary. Please note that there is also similar Category:Rotary_cannon category existing. Likewise, not all multi-barrel cannons are rotary, majority of multi-barrel cannons are non-rotary. Tatalvit (talk) 19:46, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please also see for example [[1]] for definition. I think also page Rotary_machine_gun should be added (talk) 19:53, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Only 1 article. Hard to see why we want this Rathfelder (talk) 09:06, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Merge per nominator....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 13:59, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete, this should be a container category with subcats per current nationality. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:32, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete because it will empty the target category as well. Not sure division by occupation of Category:People of American descent is necessary. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:19, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete -- The one member is the daughter of an American soldier and a Vietnamese mother and subsequently migrated to America. She might go in a category for the offspring of American soldiers in the Vietnam war, but her American descent is hardly notable for a person now in America. The headnote refers to Indian descent, which does not apply to her. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:58, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Cat People[edit]

The result of the discussion was: delete. – Fayenatic London 17:14, 2 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: This category either should be deleted or the title changed to something that explains what "Cat People" are or who they are. Is this a franchise? Is this about thematic content? We don't have categories for films that have similar names. Liz Read! Talk! 02:10, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Note: Category creator moved the content from this category, moving them to Category:Cat People (film series), which they just created. This nomination should apply to that category as well. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 17:08, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete both, it is not a franchise and we already have a Cat People dab page, that should suffice. Marcocapelle (talk) 19:36, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I added the later created category to this nomination but failed to support the nomination itself. Delete per Marcocapelle. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 08:59, 3 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: merge (non-admin closure) Marcocapelle (talk) 07:24, 12 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: WP:SMALLCAT: Category:Railway stations in Peterhead (0) has only two members and there is zero potential for growth - Peterhead never had any other railway stations. Both of the member pages would be better placed in Category:Disused railway stations in Aberdeenshire (113), which is much larger. Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:09, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
