ASEAN[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename Timrollpickering (talk) 10:19, 26 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: After a formal move discussion, Association of Southeast Asian Nations was moved to ASEAN. I suggest renaming the categories to match. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:22, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment, I wonder if the RM has been closed correctly. It rather looks as a case of no consensus. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:54, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Only Weak support -- If this goes ahead, the expansion of the name should be in the headnote. I also wonder if the RM was correctly closed, as WP discourages the use of abbreviations that may be obscure to some people, but as long as the redirect from the full name is retained, it does not unduly matter. However, there is merit in keeping category names short. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:08, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.

  • Support. The RM appears sufficiently sound, even though some of the 8:4 majority !votes were IP editors with poor English. I do not see the benefit of redirecting the full name; as it is so much longer, IMHO it is unlikely to be used. – Fayenatic London 17:59, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: delete, recently I created the two subcategories. I don't think this needs to stay as a parent category, as it merely combines two relatively unrelated topics. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:19, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kyiv[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename all. – Fayenatic London 20:29, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Full list
Nominator's rationale: Rename all per the main article which was moved to Kyiv this week following years of discussion. Many categories have been proposed for speedy renaming but opposed on the basis of a naming convention (details below); however matching the main article traditionally takes precedence over conventions on such matters. Given the widespread back and forth editing since the page move it's critical to get a clear decision about the tree ASAP.
I have not included categories with formal names, titles or by year/decade century as these will need additional consideration in their own right. Timrollpickering (talk) 18:19, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Speedy discussion
  • Support this selection of categories, which leaves other formal names which may be moved after another specific discussion. Place Clichy (talk) 07:05, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Sounds right. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 09:27, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support . Starzoner (talk) 23:56, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment It has been raised in a discussion on WP:CFD/S that the naming conventions at WP:KIEV should be adapted before making large moves, especially to clarify to which extent the Kyiv spelling is now recommended, or not. @Jackmcbarn, Oculi, Fayenatic london, and Ymblanter: pinging contributors in this discussion. Place Clichy (talk) 12:48, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Well, now that the nominator has gone to the trouble of making this nomination, it should run; and if it is approved, that plus the RM will be sufficient authority to update WP:KIEV. – Fayenatic London 17:34, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • WP:KYIV is not a policy or guideline, but defines itself as a summary of other conventions. Those conventions have been applied to move the article Kiev to Kyiv, and Kiev Oblast to Kyiv Oblast. It needs to be updated, or better yet, cut down or removed so it stops being used to stall other progress. —Michael Z. 18:28, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support -- I suspect that this is an issue of the correct transliteration of Cyrillic into Latin script. However leave cat- redirects, as Kiev has long been the usual English spelling. Thus in English we write Brussels, not Bruxelles; Rome, not Roma; Naples, not Napoli; and Venice. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:39, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support renaming both lists. The article Kyiv is renamed, after six months of moratorium and two and a half of debate. Let’s get on with it, starting with these no-brainers. —Michael Z. 18:28, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support––Geohem (talk) 08:31, 25 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral. In my experience, discussions on en.wp about the Kiev/Kyiv spelling variation have been driven far more by the intense personal passions of some editors than by application of the policy WP:AT. The latest RM a partial exception to that, because it does include sources such as style guides of major news outlets. However, the discussion was marred by features such as off-wiki canvasing, a lot of me-too-style !voting, and the presentation of false evidence such as bodged google searches which check ti he end of the results to get the real tally.
The RM was closed as "move", and as not been overturned; so I will not oppose renaming the categories. But i have too little confidence in this RM to actually support renaming the categories. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:46, 27 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: make Category:Programs a disambiguation category. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:37, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: synonyms in this context; the "collaborative" qualifier seems to be missed by many editors. fgnievinski (talk) 01:05, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not too sure. If they would be synonyms we could also speak of Government projects and Social projects but that does not sound correctly. Programs have the connotation of ongoing activities, projects are more temporary. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:26, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • oppose I think it is valuable to distinguish between an ongoing long-term programm and a short-term more one and done project Asmodea Oaktree (talk) 10:36, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Highly ambiguous (computing, tv.. who knows), US-only spelling. Johnbod (talk) 20:11, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: per Talk:Kyiv Starzoner (talk) 00:50, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Meanwhile the procedural oppose is no longer relevant, since all Kiev categories are nominated somewhere. Support for consistency with the earlier renames. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:13, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose there is no evidence that Kiev Oblast needs to be renamed using Kyiv, and the RM at Kyiv/Kiev is only about the city. Place Clichy (talk) 14:47, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment -- Having renamed the city and its categories, it is ridiculous not to rename the oblast (county) that shares its name. I would suggest a rename for the main article (perhaps even a speedy one) followed by renaming this and siblings. Peterkingiron (talk) 14:51, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: delete. The category currently contains only Hyborian Age, which is already in one of the parents, Category:Mythopoeia, and in a sibling, Category:Fantasy worlds. – Fayenatic London 15:33, 4 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This is a WP:SMALLCAT with only two articles. Seeing as most fiction, by definition, is a fictional period of time where fictional things happen, I also think this risks being a WP:SUBJECTIVECAT. These are already covered just fine at fictional worlds (which could be renamed fictional settings). Shooterwalker (talk) 21:09, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose as SMALLCAT's "by their very definition" doesn't apply here. The articles (e.g. Hyborian Age) are specifically about fictional time periods and even if this category is deleted should be upmerged. DexDor (talk) 19:58, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • The main issue here is the WP:SMALLCAT. When you say "the articles", you're talking about one article. I'm not opposed to an upmerge if there's a suitable target. The best target is probably "Fantasy Worlds", and the target Hyborian Age is already categorized there. Shooterwalker (talk) 20:09, 29 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (or merge if a suitable merge target is available) per WP:SMALLCAT and it is very unlikely that we will ever have many other separate articles about fictional time periods (as normally fictional time periods are just an element in an article about a fictional work). Marcocapelle (talk) 08:37, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge to parent Category:Historical eras. These are simply fictional versions of the same concept. Dimadick (talk) 08:47, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Relisted to generate a more thorough discussion and clearer consensus.
Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 03:45, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Too small. Merging fictional instalments into Category:Historical eras does not make sense to me.★Trekker (talk) 05:22, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Fictional historical eras are rarely common between several unrelated fictional universes. They are therefore not really separable from the fictional universe they belong too, and classified as such. This is not true of all fictional events or settings, e.g. World War III or post-nuclear apocalypse are fictional themes shared by a lot of unrelated fictional universes. You cannot say the same for the Hyborian Age, or any other hypothetical fictional historical era. Place Clichy (talk) 14:41, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete/Listify. Too small for a cat, but a list will allow the fictional eras without stand-alone articles to be grouped together. Grutness...wha? 01:50, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • IIRC, the list was deleted with a consensus at AFD, due to this being indiscriminate. Every fictional setting is also a fictional time. Shooterwalker (talk) 15:56, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep -- For a category such as this we ought to merge, rather than delete. However there is no obvious merge target. I think this might be populated with some of the future centuries, beloved of science fiction. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Peterkingiron (talkcontribs) 14:58, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: Rename Timrollpickering (talk) 10:10, 25 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: This category has a mix of templates for different reasons. It's unclear what characteristics link the contents. I think the thing that links the most contents is that they contain reference values, sometimes ranges, sometimes values, so I propose a rename to better reflect the category's purpose.
