[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: Merge Timrollpickering (talk) 11:11, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Angolan lawyers by type to Category:Angolan lawyers
- Nominator's rationale: We only have a total of 5 articles about Angolan lawyers. Only content of this category is Category:Angolan prosecutors. We dont need an intermediate category. Rathfelder (talk) 22:47, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support, redundant category layer. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:49, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support - subcat schemes for 5 articles are in general premature. Oculi (talk) 12:05, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Rename to Category:1985 establishments in Vatican City Timrollpickering (talk) 11:12, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Overcategorisation per WP:SMALL and WP:NARROWCAT Morbidthoughts (talk) 18:51, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Keep This is a dinstict place. We allow categorizing anything by the year and distinct place it was organized.John Pack Lambert (talk) 18:52, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- WP:OTHERSTUFF: How many other Vatican City establishments are there to even organise this by year?[1] Morbidthoughts (talk) 19:09, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Speedy rename to Category:1985 establishments in Vatican City, per WP:C2C, aligning with the format of the sibling categories in Category:Establishments in Vatican City by year. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:54, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Rename per Marcocapelle. It's actually a country, part of Category:1985 establishments by country. Oculi (talk) 21:48, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Keep per WP:SMALLCAT as part of an established .... but speedy rename to Category:1985 establishments in Vatican City, per C2C per Marcocapelle for consistency. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:52, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Category:Illegal speech
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. MER-C 14:10, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Illegal speech to Category:Speech crimes
- Nominator's rationale: I just discovered this category after creating Category:Speech crimes, which I think is a better definition for the concept. (Disclaimer: I recently moved the head article from "criminal speech" to "speech crimes" due to the latter name being a clear common name.) Judging from my searches, "illegal speech" is a US-centric term referring to speech which is not protected by the first amendment, while "speech crimes" is more used internationally. If this merge is not done, the categories should be merged in the opposite direction. buidhe 18:31, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Merge the two categories as they have the same scope. I do not have a preference regarding the title of the category or of the article. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:58, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
- Merge or Reverse Merge Ideally, this would have been an RM at the main article but I've also inadvertently created duplicate categories. RevelationDirect (talk) 14:31, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
- Merge same scope, although many other items ought to be categorized therein. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:09, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Too little content. What is even the point of this category? It in no way aids in navigation. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 11:52, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose. 2 files, an article and a sub-category. I find that more than enough to aid in navigation. --Gonnym (talk) 11:57, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- Delete. Categories like this should have more than the one article about itself. StarcheerspeaksnewslostwarsTalk to me 19:26, 4 May 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose per creator. Certainly helps navigation, even if the nominator does not believe it does for them personally, and given that the season has been renewed and the first season is almost over, the page is likely to be split soon into Season 1 and 2 articles, which will have their own files, needing it further. -- /Alex/21 01:45, 5 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support, the category only contains the eponymous article. In that, I do not count files or redirects to that same article since they do not provide new information about the topic. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:21, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Please add new comments below this notice. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 18:05, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Delete for Now I guess I don't understand why this would plausibly be kept since it ties one main article with redirects and doesn't aid navigation. No objection to recreating if we ever get up to 5 direct articles. RevelationDirect (talk) 23:58, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Delete There is virtually no actual content. See WP:EPONCAT for the standards needed for eponymous categories. ―Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 07:54, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- Not sure how the comments above dismiss files and redirect categories as not existent for navigation. How else would somebody move from Batwoman (TV series) character redirects to lists to File:Batwoman TV series logo.png? Manually type in something and hope for the best? --Gonnym (talk) 08:48, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- All information about the topic can be found in the article Batwoman (TV series). There is nothing substantive in the redirect categories or in the file. Marcocapelle (talk) 10:07, 21 May 2020 (UTC)
- Reply Simple: A reader would use the redirect to get to the sole Batwoman (TV series) article and then see the logo in the infobox without ever going to the actual image file. RevelationDirect (talk) 22:20, 23 May 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Rename Timrollpickering (talk) 11:03, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Austrian magazines to Category:Magazines published in Austria and all such 'Fooian' magazine categories.
- Nominator's rationale: Wikipedia:Categories_for_deletion/Log/2006_August_6#Newspapers_by_country renamed Category:Austrian newspapers to Category:Newspapers published in Austria (see its exemplary rationale). Moreover these are all subcats of eg Category:Mass media in Austria, which was likewise renamed to use 'in' via this cfd: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2016_February_10#Media_by_country. Discussion for magazines
[edit]- Support as nom. Oculi (talk) 15:10, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support to reduce ambiguity. E.g. German magazines may be wrongly interpreted as German-language magazines. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:38, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Rathfelder (talk) 20:44, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Rename all per nom, for clarity. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:49, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Clearer scope. Dimadick (talk) 14:45, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support. I've often thought it was weird for newspaper categories to be formatted as "Newspapers published in [Country]" while magazines were at "[Demonym] magazines" — but the idea of actually taking on the job of batching a full nomination for discussion here just gave me hives. So I'm thankful that somebody finally has, because this has been necessary for a while. Bearcat (talk) 17:00, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: Confusing split of main category. User:Namiba 14:46, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support per nom. Perhaps some day the whole tree may be renamed to "by populated place" instead of "by city". Marcocapelle (talk) 15:45, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Prefer "by populated place" as this avoid the tricky question of what places are cities. There was a long discussion over this several years ago. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:55, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support I'm open to a broader conversation about what we call groups of people living together, but creating a duplicate category tree doesn't aid navigation. RevelationDirect (talk) 22:21, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Support let's merge the cats for now and have a subsequent discussion about city → something else (populated place is clunky, maybe settlement?), which I would also support. SportingFlyer T·C 08:02, 24 May 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: Delete Timrollpickering (talk) 11:16, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Propose Deleting Category:European Initiative Prize
- Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:European Initiative Prize recipients
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEFINING (WP:OCAWARD)
- The European Union mission/office in Paris has an annual symposium where they also give out the European Initiative Prize for journalism covering European topics. This Wikipedia category is a blend of articles on publications and on journalists but, either way, the award seems non-defining: of the 14 entries in the category 1 mentions it in passing, 1 in the lede, and 12 not at all. It's hardly surprising that respected European based publications and journalists would be covering European topics. The contents are already listified here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:42, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. bibliomaniac15 02:55, 2 June 2020 (UTC)
- Propose Deleting/Listifying Category:Recipients of the Cuban Friendship Medal
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:NONDEF (WP:OCAWARD)
- The Friendship Medal (Cuba) is given to non-Cubans for solidarity with the Cuban revolution. The vast majority of people who won the award have no Wikipedia page but we have three that do: American actor/activist Danny Glover, South African anti-Apartheid priest Michael Lapsley and Zambian Prime Minister Elijah Mudenda. All three articles do mention the award in the body but neither it nor their relations with Cuba more generally seem defining. The contents plus all the redlinks are already listified here in the main article for any reader interested in the topic. (Alternatively, if kept, rename to Category:Recipients of the Friendship Medal (Cuba) to match the main article.) - RevelationDirect (talk) 02:42, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- *RFC There is an open request for comments on proposed changes to WP:OCAWARD. Your input (pro/con/other) is always welcome here. -RD
- Delete per nom. A list has already been created as a section in the award article. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:19, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose for now. I agree with the basic principle of RevelationDirect's assertion that receipt of the medal is non-defining ... but the problem with deleting the category is that it leaves those articles with no category to group the shared defining characteristic that these people are noted for the association with Cuba.
- If we had some other category to group pro-Cuba activists, then this category would be redundant ... but until then it serves as a proxy for the category which we should have. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:47, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: Is addressing your concern as simple as renaming the category to Category:Pro-Cuban activists? RevelationDirect (talk) 23:55, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- @RevelationDirect, I think that a Category:Pro-Cuban activists would be a fine substitute. But it wouldn't be a renaming, because it would have completely different parents. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:18, 16 May 2020 (UTC)
- @BrownHairedGirl: Is addressing your concern as simple as renaming the category to Category:Pro-Cuban activists? RevelationDirect (talk) 23:55, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
- I was going to say "Just delete" as it does not need to be listified, but the suggested repurposing is also acceptable. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:07, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Whether a category should be created for pro-Cuba activists is a separate issue (and, by the way, that still wouldn't be a defining characteristic of Glover who is in plenty of categories for more defining characteristics). DexDor (talk) 19:21, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
