Birding and birdwatching[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: merge. MER-C 10:15, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: What we have here is two categories that cover substantially the same subject. In fact, they share the same main article. Birding seems to be somewhat broader than birdwatching, but the distinction between the two terms is fuzzy and subjective, all of which is laid out pretty well in the main article at Birdwatching#Birding,_birdwatching,_and_twitching. The obvious solution is to combine the terms and merge the contents of the two categories into a single category, much as was done with Category:Civil rights and liberties. WikiProject Birds was notified of this CFD. Anomalous+0 (talk) 03:30, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support It makes sense to me - the terms are ill-defined points on a continuum of interest and skills. Craigthebirder (talk) 01:47, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - but move the subcategories to the parent Category:Ornithology instead (so split rather than merge). Marcocapelle (talk) 09:15, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. MER-C 10:04, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Yet another textbook WP:SMALLCAT, cf. Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2019_November_27#Category:Children_of_Irene_of_Athens Constantine 23:30, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 November 27#Category:Children of Irene of Athens. DrKay (talk) 08:57, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete -- If there were a dozen notable children such a category might possibly be permissible, but not for one son. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:12, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. It looks like Galba's only natural children died in childhood, and are mentioned only in passing; they are unlikely to have articles written about them, leaving this a category of one. A category is only useful if it helps people find related articles that they might not see otherwise, and if the only other (unlikely) topics would naturally be found in the articles about Galba and his heir, a category for his children serves no useful purpose. Category:Generals of Byzantine Emperors[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename. MER-C 10:16, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per parent category Category:Byzantine generals, per common practice of 'X by Y' categories, and per better phrasing: the generals were not of the emperor, they merely served under him (and any predecessors or successors) Constantine 23:23, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Cplakidas: You could safely speedy-close this and move it per C2C. -- Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 23:26, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If you agree to the move, as the category creator, Iazyges, I think we can simply leave a note here to any closing admin per WP:C2E as uncontroversial. Constantine 23:30, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 23:31, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Suggest to upmerge most of the subcats though, only four of them have a substantial size. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:23, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Marcocapelle: That's because I'm working on filling them; those four have just been around and filled before. Per WP:SMALLCAT "Note also that this criterion does not preclude all small categories; a category which does have realistic potential for growth, such as a category for holders of a notable political office, may be kept even if only a small number of its articles actually exist at the present time. Also, subcategories of Category:Works by creator may be created even if they include only one page." Iazyges Consermonor Opus meum 18:10, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per nom Clearer meaning. Dimadick (talk) 07:40, 7 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Makes more sense at the proposed title. P Aculeius (talk) 01:45, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Israeli soldiers[edit]

The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: do not merge. MER-C 10:03, 14 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: What differentiates "soldiers" from "military personnel"? buidhe 05:32, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Procedural oppose, if anything should be changed here, it is Category:Soldiers that should be discussed in the first place. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:55, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - a swift glance at Category:Israeli military personnel reveals doctors and chaplains, airmen and sailors, who are not soldiers. This serves the usual purpose of a subcategory: to separate one variety of military personnel from the others. Oculi (talk) 10:46, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep - I concur with Oculi's remarks. Anomalous+0 (talk) 13:02, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • The nomination is not entirely pointless: almost none of the people in this category was notable while having the rank of soldier, the category functions in fact as a case of WP:OCMISC. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:55, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
