Nominator's rationale: An unusual category with no parallel with two small subcats (also part of this nomination: Greeks who died in 2016 and Greeks who died in 2017). No room for significant expansion and not a common category type. Raymie (tc) 07:23, 30 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Motivation/value: the chief motivation for the creation of these categories is to answer the Question Which Greeks died in 2016? etc. This is one of the main reasons why Wikipedia is very useful: it answers questions that are not answered (adequately) elsewhere. (I think this paragraph answers the "completely unneeded" argument by @Inter&anthro:)
"small subcats": the subcategories are small because in 13 days there was not enough time for them get bigger. If Wikimedia had given me a salary I could on my own have made them bigger!
"two small subcats": The intent is to have subcategories Greeks who died in 2015, Greeks who died in 2014, Greeks who died in 2013, Greeks who died in 2012 etc.SoSivr (talk) 17:32, 31 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Tentative keep. The died-by-year categories are large (every year 2010-2016 has more than 7000 articles), and they really could stand to be diffused. Either splitting by nationality or splitting by month would be helpful, and as nobody's advocating for by-month, that ought to be a separate discussion. My only objection is the name; the parent is Category:Greek people (note that Category:Greeks is a redirect thereto), and most nationalities are "ADJECTIVE people", not "ADJECTIVES". Nyttend (talk) 23:57, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. The larger category serves its purpose and it does not need to be subdivided into ~200 tiny categories. —Xezbeth (talk) 08:59, 3 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete (upmerging if necessary) (unless someone can come up with a convincing argument that the benefits of such a categorization scheme would outweigh its costs). The birth/death years categories are not like "normal" (what the person is notable for) categories that are subdivided when large. If you want a list of Greek people (or, for that matter, actors/politicians etc) who were born/died in a particular year then try category intersection or WikiData. DexDor (talk) 13:35, 4 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Normal" categories group together articles about similar topics (e.g. 19th century French painters) which can be of use to readers/editors. When such categories get large there's usually some way in which they can be split to make them more useful. The year-of-birth/death categories don't group together such similar articles, but they may be useful (e.g. for editors maintaining BLP tags) and they have low cost - e.g. they cause little watchlist noise (typically they only need to be edited when the article is created and when the person dies) and they don't cause much category clutter. Hybrid categories would have the costs without (afaics) providing much (if any) benefits. This question comes up sufficiently often that perhaps a note/essay explaining this might be useful. DexDor (talk) 19:31, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • That depends on how you define "maintenance category". An argument could perhaps be made that these categories should be hidden (as a category containing many thousands of articles is unlikely to be of use to readers), but that's not a very strong argument. Nominator's rationale: delete per WP:OVERLAPCAT, it's not appropriate to create a Dutch Empire subcategory of a Dutch Republic category unless the Empire category has content from outside the Dutch Republic. The latter is not the case however.
Note (this applies to all four nominations, this one and the three above): it seems like the category creator is trying to put the articles Dutch East India Company and Dutch West India Company in as many categories as possible, not realizing that the enormous amount of category clutter at the bottom of the article isn't helpful for navigation at all.
