- The result of the discussion was: merge/rename as specified. MER-C 10:08, 20 March 2016 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Airlines of Cote D'Ivoire to Category:Airlines of Ivory Coast
- Propose renaming Category:Country data templates of Côte d'Ivoire to Category:Country data templates of Ivory Coast
- Propose renaming Category:Côte d'Ivoire national handball team templates to Category:Ivory Coast national handball team templates
- Propose renaming Category:Côte d'Ivoire multi-sport events infobox templates to Category:Ivory Coast multi-sport events infobox templates
- Propose renaming Category:Research institutes in Côte d'Ivoire to Category:Research institutes in Ivory Coast
- Nominator's rationale: Merge/rename. Some nominations opposed at the speedy renaming section (by an apparent single-purpose account). The category tree and article space uses Category:Ivory Coast/Ivory Coast. These are the only categories that do not (apart from the Olympics ones, since we use the name by which a country competes at the Olympics, even if it doesn't match the WP name). We could debate the merits of the article using either name, but right now, English WP uses "Ivory Coast" as a result of this discussion, and there's no reason for these categories not to conform. Redirects may be created on the alternate form. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:22, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:40, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Empty Editor2020, Talk 22:06, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- Delete trivial. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 21:06, 29 February 2016 (UTC)
- Delete Though this is a new category, nominated on the day of its creation, this is an improper grouping of topics. Infertility describes the condition of being unable to reproduce by natural means. There are a variety of causes, but they seem to be mostly biological. Sterilization is a term for medical techniques that intentionally leave a person unable to reproduce and most are permanent. The effect on reproduction is the same but the reasons are worlds apart. Dimadick (talk) 17:26, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- Comment -- A category for real people to whom this applied would certainly be NN. However, I can imagine that there might be a novel the main protagonist was incapable of having children and this was a significant issue in the plot. However, if it is still empty, we do not need it. Peterkingiron (talk) 15:48, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- I agree - even though in olden times, dynasties rose and fell upon the ability or inability of a monarch to produce an heir. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:43, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: No uses (apart from the old examples on the testcases and the talkpage discussion). This was created in 2006, and I think that people know how to use it correctly by now. Debresser (talk) 21:58, 28 February 2016 (UTC) By the way, the template will need some tweaking if this category is deleted, and I will be happy to take care of that. - The result of the discussion was: rename. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:17, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: This is an unnecessary distinction. The similar categories for former communist states like Yugoslavia don't have it. Charles Essie (talk) 18:24, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- Support, as we usually don't subdivide by historic periods unless we have a parent category to hold the different periods. Either way, the correct name would be Category:Political repression in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic per parent Category:Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, which includes both the 1948–60 and the 1960–89 periods. --PanchoS (talk) 11:37, 8 March 2016 (UTC)

Category:Arab nationalist heads of state
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. No need to upmerge, since they are all already in the category tree one way or another. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:58, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Arab nationalists are ridiculously overcategorized. "Heads of state" were always either military personnel or career politicians. Personally I think most of the subcategories for Arab nationalists are unnecessary. You don't see this level of subcategorization for any other nationalists. Plus, some of these people were heads of government, not heads of state. Charles Essie (talk) 17:53, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- Question -- Are all Arab nationalist heads of state military personnel? AS nom states, they may be career politicians. The other potential merge target is Category:Heads of state in the Middle East, but that is essentially a container category. The present President Assad no doubt holds a senior military rank, but he was previously a doctor, not a soldier. I think the answer is to split this into Category:20th-century heads of state in the Middle East and Category:21st-century heads of state in the Middle East, which will fit along side Category:19th-century monarchs in the Middle East. Peterkingiron (talk) 16:00, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe, but some of the Arab heads of state in this category are/were leaders of countries that are not part of the standard territorial definition of the Middle East (such as the Maghreb states). Charles Essie (talk) 16:45, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- Neutral on delete, oppose upmerge as nominated, because articles are already in some other child category of Category:Arab nationalist politicians. Marcocapelle (talk) 18:25, 6 March 2016 (UTC)
- Merge, delete, either way. My point is Category:Arab nationalists in excessively overcategorized. Charles Essie (talk) 20:28, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

- Propose merging Category:Leftist parties in South Korea to Category:Socialist parties in South Korea
- Nominator's rationale: Every party in the former category is socialist. It seems silly to have two categories for the same thing. Charles Essie (talk) 17:33, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:27, 8 April 2016 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Biblical figures in Islam to Category:Biblical people in Islam
- Nominator's rationale: rename as figures is a very vague term while actually people are meant. This is a follow-up on this discussion which is still open. After renaming, the articles Devil (Islam), Michael (archangel) and Holy Spirit (Islam) should be upmerged. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:09, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
- Comment/Question Tree of life (Quran) would be another exception. When you suggest upmerging, would the target be both Category:Christianity and Islam and Category:Islam and Judaism? RevelationDirect (talk) 00:37, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for adding. The answer to your question is yes, upmerge to all four parents. Marcocapelle (talk) 07:17, 1 March 2016 (UTC)
- Neutral I'm fine either way here but, since I commented, I didn't want my perspective to be ambiguous. RevelationDirect (talk) 01:03, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- @Carlossuarez46: Based on your comments in the earlier discussion, is it correct to assume that you support this nomination? Marcocapelle (talk) 08:36, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- Affirmative. I didn't add that figuring that it would have been presupposed, but thank you for clarifying. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:40, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- Support per my comments on the prior nom and the equal treatment of the two books (Quran & Bible). Carlossuarez46 (talk) 19:40, 4 March 2016 (UTC)
- Support people is a much clearer word.John Pack Lambert (talk) 03:37, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Category:People's Republic of China novelists from Beijing
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. There was support to rename the "Novelists from FOO" categories into "Writers from FOO" categories, but the former were not nominated/tagged as part of this discussion. It could be pursued in a follow-up discussion. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:56, 21 March 2016 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: No other country seems to have "novelists by province/city" subcategories, much less an additional descriptor like "People's Republic of" (presumably to distinguish writers from e.g. the Qing dynasty), so I think this is clearly overcategorization. If anyone thinks that Category:Novelists from Beijing should be further upmerged with Category:Writers from Beijing, I am willing to support that as well.
Also nominate merging the following:
- Category:People's Republic of China novelists from Shanghai to Category:Novelists from Shanghai
- Category:People's Republic of China novelists from Anhui to Category:Novelists from Anhui
- Category:People's Republic of China novelists from Chongqing to Category:Novelists from Chongqing

- Support – to 'Writers', not novelists, as we have Category:Writers by city but not Category:Novelists by city. (I am not particularly keen on subcatting 'people from XXX (city)' at all, but editors do like intersecting subcats interminably.) Oculi (talk) 12:36, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: delete. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:07, 9 March 2016 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: This might make an interesting list and a list would have many advantages (e.g. being able to include a few words of explanation against each entry, being able to include events for which there isn't a standalone article). However, as a way of categorizing it's not as good as the other ways we categorize (e.g. by year, location and type) as those characteristics provide comprehensive categorization and mesh with other categories. We don't, for example, categorize maritime/railway/road/factory accidents by whether they kill any bystanders. That the category was created without any parent categories indicates that the creator doesn't understand wp categorization and hence they may have thought this was the correct way to create a list. Note: this category is currently incomplete (El Al Flight 1862 being one omission) and isn't precisely defined (e.g. should British Airtours Flight 28M be included?). DexDor (talk) 07:03, 28 February 2016 (UTC)

- Propose Deleting Category:Presidential unit citations
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SHAREDNAME
- This category groups together 5 apparently unrelated medals that happen to share similar names. The purported main article, Presidential unit citation, is just a disambiguation page. - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:32, 28 February 2016 (UTC)
