Propose renaming Category:O. J. Simpson murder trial to Category:O. J. Simpson murder case
Nominator's rationale: Per main article. Alternately, rename article through WP:RM. —Justin (koavf)TCM☯ 20:25, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename, not everything in cat directly pertains to the trial (for example, If I Did It). Roscelese (talk) 21:12, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename this is a broader name, and would include everything else related to the case, and includes the trial. ---- Steve Quinn (talk) 08:53, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The result of the discussion was: delete. Per WP:CAT, categories should be based on essential, "defining" features of article subjects, and the keep arguments do not claim that this applies (they are mostly variants of WP:ITSUSEFUL). --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 05:33, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category:The X Factor winner's singles (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs)
Nominator's rationale: Delete. I'm not sure of an appropriate policy or guideline to back up the deletion of this category but to me it just seems rather pointless. I've never seen anythig like this before, why is it necessary? Surely it's some kind of overcategorisation? AnemoneProjectors 13:29, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Against, much to my suprise. Of the 7 articles, 1 That's My Goal is entirely about the X Factor single and the other 6 all have a section on the X Factor single. That makes the cat defining in my mind. I'm am open to renaming it though. RevelationDirect (talk) 14:51, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete as overcategorization. It's not if the category is defining, it's if the subject articles can be defined by this category. If these were all original songs sung by the winner, you may have an argument. All are already in Category:The X Factor (UK), which should be sufficient. --Starcheerspeaksnewslostwars (talk) 00:23, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep This is rather a very revealing category that can introduce us to a bigger number of new winner song singles we were never aware of from many countries and in many languages. These songs are only to grow further as newer countries start X Factor series (including USA this year). Many are also almost automatic #1s, yet another significant fact. In our Anglo-centric minds, we always think that X Factor winner's songs mean the English version and controversies that come with them every Christmas. This couldn't be further from the truth. Whereas there are winner's song in many other X Factor country competitions actually and many not even near Christmas. As to the fact that most are cover versions, my reaction is so what? Almost everything the competitors sing are covers. So what's new? However, a song from an earlier artist that years later turns as a winner's song not only gives the song a longer life and a whole new perspective, it is a significant version which validates such originals in a completely new light. werldwayd (talk) 04:18, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As additional illustration that this is not an overcategorization, here are original hits included as Winner's songs now duly categorized: "Dove si vola" by Italian X Factor winner Marco Mengoni, "I've Come to Life" by German X factor winner Edita Abdieski, "In punta di piedi" by Italian X Factor winner Nathalie, "Moments" by Norwegian X Factor winner Hans Bollandsås, "My Dream" by Danish X Factor winner Thomas Ring Petersen. They all sand their winner's song in a semi-final or a final of the show / series they won, then the singles were released the next day and so many of those mentioned above charted straight at #1 in their own country official charts. I am sure there are other winner's successful winner's singles like this, but we couldn't categorize them as nobody established pages for them in English. This is not just a rehash of British X Factor category that can be adequately listed in a UK banner werldwayd (talk) 04:59, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Did you create most of those just to populate this category and therefore justify it? Not that you can't do that... AnemoneProjectors 17:28, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually some of the songs were already there. I just added the category. Some other songs were already Wikipedia articles but in the various language Wikipedias. I just translated them to English. Some I created, not just to populate a category, but because they are significant songs that shot to #1 in their own countries. I was listening to the songs as well while creating them, another plus of this endeavour... Wikipedia is an international space and X Factor is as international as one gets. So why not the winner's songs having their own pages if they are also number ones on the charts? It just proves the point, doesn't it, that this is not such an "out of the blue" category designed for some British releases, but is a thriving category and, to my mind, a valid one. Plus that t is a great aid to a searcher. Let's say you are only aware of Shayne Ward singing "That's My Goal" and that's all... You notice that it is a winner's song through the category on the bottom. Now a quick click later on the category, you will be led to tens of other songs of similar nature, winner's songs from X Factor from all over the world. Now that's a revelation and a whole new world opening in front of you.. It's Wikipedia magic with easy user-friendly system of getting results and learning new things. In any case, even if we lose the category, as you are proposing, we still would have won pages and pages of new articles of significant winner songs. So all's well, I guess, even if the category is gone eventually. Your move has only motivated me to make Wikipedia even richer, and this for the good of all X Factor editions that will grow and grow and grow now that it is on an onslaught to take over Idol series and bypass it by more interesting programming and talent. werldwayd (talk) 20:37, 3 January 2011 (UTC) werldwayd (talk) 05:34, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Categorizing songs by shows the singers have been on seems like a bad precedent to me.--Mike Selinker (talk) 01:31, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Clarification: For people not familiar with the series, these singles were released because the person won the competition on the show as the prize. It's not that an already famous person appeared on a talk show to promote their latest album. RevelationDirect (talk) 15:14, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Not even mentioned in some of the articles, so it can hardly be defining. Others are songs from singers who did not win the competition, but were a finalist, or finished third, etc. Kind of a mess. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:41, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • Actually that's not correct, they all mention The X Factor (or X Factor) and were all released by winners. AnemoneProjectors 08:16, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Churches[edit]

The result of the discussion was: Rename Category:Lists of churches, Category:Coronation churches, and Category:Types of churches as nominated, and rename Category:Basilica churches to Category:Ecclesiastical basilicas. I'm taking no action on Category:Armenian Churches, because that tree needs standardization in another nomination before the top-level category can be renamed; and on Category:Collegiate churches, because that seems to be a phrase that extends beyond the buildings themselves. The lists category should be purged of non-building articles. The coronation category gets renamed because it contains only buildings; the issue of whether the category should exist has not been thoroughly discussed.--Mike Selinker (talk) 13:24, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Propose renaming:

Rationalle: Per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2008 October 17#Category:Churches - I believe thatthe rationalle there equally applies to these categories. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 13:28, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support: The usage of these cats is clearly church buildings (even the Armenian one) so the overall rename should apply to these as well. RevelationDirect (talk) 14:40, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • rename per nom, but why not the rest? Look at Category:Church buildings for its subcats and sub-subcats (all the way down) that need to be renamed. Hmains (talk) 19:45, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. The main article is Church (building). From the dab page, this is the primary usage so one could argue that it does not need to be changed. If these are renamed, then there is going to be a need to mass rename hundreds of categories. I'm not convinced that these renames are needed. However if a rename is needed, then it should be of the form Churches (building). Vegaswikian (talk) 09:14, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Renaming these, but not the whole tree, which is unnecessary - see at least the great majority of stuff in Category:Lists of churches. I see no merit in Vegas' alternative name. Johnbod (talk) 12:30, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep Category:Lists of churches as the category specifically includes articles both about buildings and about congregations. Previous mass-renamings of "church" categories have produced no small number of inaccuracies (e.g. a church may have been founded in 1850 even if its worship space was built in 1890). On that note, Keep Category:Armenian Churches, which will require a much more comprehensive rename for all its children; as it stands it is a duplicate of Category:Armenian Apostolic churches. Rename Category:Basilica churches to Category:Ecclesiastical basilicas, which is the term used in the main article, basilica. Keep Category:Collegiate churches; the term refers to a specific worship practice which is unrelated to the building. Delete Category:Coronation churches, which is non-defining; it seems to capture every church that has ever been used for a coronation, even if the event was a one-off centuries ago. Rename Category:Types of churches as per nom. - choster (talk) 18:36, 27 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
