Scuola Libera del Nudo[edit]

Fundamental misconception of what the Scuola libera del nudo actually is, which is a department of the Accademia. It's the life drawing class, and is open to unregistered as well as registered students. It is no more an art school than Physics Department or evening class is a university. The one reference is about a school founded in Rome in 1754, which since at least 1870 has been part of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma and is covered in our article on that topic. An except from the Oxford History of Western Art notes: "As in Florence, figure-drawing became part of the Roman academy's curriculum; in 1754, Benedict XIV established a separate seat for this activity, near the new public galleries he had opened on the Capitoline, in what came to be called the Scuola or Accademia del Nudo. Expenses there were underwritten by the Pope."

In addition, numerous articles on artists in Wikipedia mention Scuola Libera del Nudo, so it seems worthwhile to explain what it is so people can comprehend what kind of scholastic programming is involved. It certainly sounds like an art school, so if it isn't, all the more reason to have an article explaining what it is.

I appreciate Justlettersandnumbers clarifications and certainly accuracy is important. Redirecting to life drawing, as he did is not illuminating for readers. Explaining that this is the name of various life drawing classes or scholastic programs in Italy would be useful. The history of these programs and the role they've played in educating many artists (including notable ones) is significant.

Oxford History of Western Art continues from the above excerpt to cover what kind of studies (mathematics) were viewed as important to include in art classes and dicusses how art was taught and practiced. I see plenty of room for expansion. Wikiombudsman (talk) 20:39, 4 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Per the nominator, the article is misconceived, implying that these are separate and specific institutions, when all they are are what Italians call life drawing training (primarily in the accademie). Of course such classes play and played an important role in educating artists, everywhere, not just in Italy. I don't really see room for expansion under this narrow title. It's not an appropriate "launching pad" for discussion of wider issues in art education. Create an article on Art education in Italy, including its history.
