An article about one of Mahatma Gandhi's many visits to over a 1000 towns and villages. This isn't as notable as his visit to Champaran and even in that case, the visit is included in Champaran and not as a separate article. The source for this visit is one book (ref 2, 3 are the same book in two different languages. I would have suggested merging to the place, but the content is more like a journal entry, so decided against it. Don't think this is a candidate for merge/redirect. PROD was contested. - As strange as it sounds for a article based on a 1934 event, I think the most applicable policy here is WP:NOTNEWS. Gandhi is obviously a figure of immense importance. As such, nearly every event in his entire life has been covered by multiple reliable sources. That doesn't mean we should have separate articles about every event in his life. I would support moving the content to a more general article like Mahatma Gandhi's visits of 1934 if anyone is willing to write such an article. Otherwise, it comes down to a personal reflection on news-like coverage of a single event and should be deleted. --ThaddeusB (talk) 19:23, 14 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
DeleteI agree that WP:NOTNEWS applies, and there is no indication that this trip was individually of historical importance. Incidentally, I could not locate any sign of the cited Ramasamy books either online, in Worldcat, or in A Comprehensive, Annotated Bibliography on Mahatma Gandhi (volume 1, or volume 2, which list over 6000 sources related to MKG); I am not suggesting that the books do not exist, only that they are really obscure. Given the amount of literature on Gandhi's life, unless an event is marked out in one of the mainstream histories or biographies, or in several other non-contemporaneous accounts, it is unlikely to be notable for an article in itself or even due to be mentioned in broader wikipedia articles. - Merge with Andipatti. Agree with User:Priyanath that Gandhi's trip is notable in that town's history. Abecedare (talk) 20:18, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
- I have due regards for the comments made by the administrators. Nevertheless, I am of the opinion that their proposal to delete the article has a bias. They are viewing the article as the one pertaining to Mahatma Gandhi whereas the article is presented under the category: Memorabilia having relevance to Gandhi's period. When such an article like Barry Halper (whose baseball memorabilia's theft, sale and auction have been described in the said-article) is allowed to exist in Wikipedia, deleting the article: Mahatma Gandhi's visit to Andipatti in 1934 which details about an object - Welcome Address printed on 'kadhi' cloth in native language about 75 years ago - which is treasured for its connection to a historical event, is not justifiable. If it is necessary, the title of the article could be suitably changed after a discussion. Now the decision is yours and that of the Wikipedia users!--Chinnottakaran (talk) 08:26, 15 August 2009 (UTC)--Chinnottakaran (talk) 08:29, 15 August 2009 (UTC) Moved comment here from the AFD talk page. - Merge into Andipatti, under a History section. The event and visit are surely notable for that town, and a very interesting bit of history that will only get more notable with the passage of time. It's not as if Gandhi just slept there, only passed through, or merely watered his horses there. Priyanath talk 20:11, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
