The reviewer comments appear below the article text. {{Infobox Pirate}} Bernard Claesen Speirdyke, also called Barnard or Bart Speirdyke, (fl. 1663-1670) was a 17 century Dutch buccaneer. Commander of the 18-gun Mary and Jane, he was a longtime privateer active in Cuba throughout the 1660s. In early-1670, he set out from Port Royal with letters from Governor Thomas Modyford to the Governor of Cuba "signifying peace between the two nations". As a further show of goodwill, several Spanish prisoners being held in Jamaica were also returned. However, the Governor of Bayamo was suspicious of his intentions and had an officer search his ship three times looking for evidence of privateering. Having brought a full cargo of European goods, which were in short supply among the local townspeople, Speirdyke soon sold his entire stock. Despite this breech of Spanish law, the governor chose to turn a blind eye. Setting sail for his return to Jamaica, it was shortly after leaving the harbor that they were hailed by an English ship and asked where they hailed from. When Speirdyke answered Jamaica, the captain revealed himself as Manuel Rivero Pardel, a former Portuguese privateer turned pirate hunter, and called upon the elderly Dutchman to defend himself. Pardel opened fire and the two ships began a battle lasting until the evening when it became to dark to see. Speirdyke was outnumbered 18 to 70, however he continued to fight on. At dawn, he sailed towards Pardel's ship which he and his men boarded. The Dutchmen were said to have fought bravely and during the savage hand-to-hand fighting that followed resulted in one-third of Pardal's crew being killed or wounded. The numbers of the Portuguese eventually overwhelmed Speirdyke and his men. By the time the Dutch surrendered, the Mary and Jane was on fire in two places and five men had been killed including Speirdyke. Sending nine of the survivors back with a message to Modyford of his commission and his intentions of retaliation for the raid of Portobello two years before, he took the remaining four with him as prisoners to Cartagena. The town is a part of the Greenville Metropolitan Area located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. Education Stokes local school is Stokes Elementary School. Which serves as a Pre-K to 8th grade classes. For Higher education students go to the nearby North Pitt Highschool. Many student in the area go on to Pitt Community College or East Carolina University. Stokes community has a long history of putting education as a top priority. Stokes Elementary School has receive many awards over the years for its excellence. Utilities Stokes Regional Water Company serves fresh water supplies for Stokes and the surrounding communities. Congelton and Stokes Gas supplies majority of the area with the communities LP needs. Embarq serves the area with local telephone access and also supplies dsl to the residents. GUC is the supplier of electricity. Attractions Stokes has many areas of interest. A new bike and hiking trail is being built going thrue the town. When finished it will be one of the longest in the State. There is also much wildlife to observe in the area. Also on many nights locals find a good time at the Auction House. Business Stokes has diverse businesses in its area. Many are privately own by residents of the town. There is three local community gas stations that offer a wide selection of goods and services. Daycare providers, mechanic shops, metal shaping and lawn care providers also are abundant in the town. The town is also home to Any Occasion Tent and Party Rental company. Which serves the whole eastern NC seaboard and lower VA area and supplies goods for Nascar events across the country. People The town of Stokes offers a diverse racial profile. The residents are known to keep to themselves but are also known to be some of the first to help out ones in need. They believe in keeping their laws to a minimum and let the people govern themselves. One of the town founding statements is "If one is left alone to ones own moral compass then greatness pours out but when one is mandated by its government then bitterness is abundant." The area has a very low crime rate even through there is no active police force. Many attribute this to the community volunteer policing and the active time the populace takes protecting themselves and their neighbors. Future Stokes has much planned for the future. The local water company is planning to offer sewage treatment for the area. Community free wireless internet will hopefully be operable by the years end. It has three major roads. Austin Road, Agor Lane, and Secor. There is a small lake in the center of the hamlet, Lake Secor. Many properties which are 12 acres stretch from here. It's oldest houses are from the 1800s. There used to be 5 houses on Agor Lane, and two gates. The valley area where Alona Drive is called the second gate. It is a very small neighbor hood. There is one plateu which is 800 feet up. This is where Agor Ln is. Than a 200 feet hill goes. There is Tommy Ct. Than another, than another, than another.
