March 2023[edit]

Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, please note that there is a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Deviating from this style, as you did in Brianna Westbrook, disturbs uniformity among articles and may cause readability or accessibility problems. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.

Hi @SomeoneIguess: I’m afraid I don’t understand what was wrong with my edit. Could you please explain why you reverted it and posted a warning template on my talk page? Justinwsk (talk) 01:38, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
People in articles shouldn't always be referred to by last name only, to put it simply. I understand you had good intentions in the edits, but keep in mind that using 3rd person pronouns is typically preferrable. Additionally, the warning template used is a level 1 warning, meaning that good faith was assumed - take it as more of a gentle reminder than a warning.

I was only trying to circumvent any potential issues with pronouns for that article subject by simply referring to the subject by name, rather than use a pronoun that isn’t correct. Justinwsk (talk) 01:44, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to a page about Brianna, she does in fact go under "she/her" pronouns.
From https://westbrookforarizona.com/:

As a child growing up in poverty, her food source was dumpster diving every day. She witnessed substance abuse and experienced domestic violence. Brianna’s great-grandparents took her in, and she spent two years learning the meaning of hard work in their apple orchard. As a teenager, she graduated from high school with no parental support. As a young parent, Brianna returned to Arizona to be the primary provider for her siblings. For years, she worked blue-collar jobs to keep her family afloat. At 27 years old, Brianna documented her transition story to normalize the experiences of trans women.

As said, I understand the articles were in good faith, but unfortunately not ultimately required. I hope this doesnt come across too harshly.

I understand that Westbrook wishes to be referred to with feminine pronouns; however, I do not think that a serious encyclopedia needs to be in the primary business of sacrificing immutable fact for the feelings of the subjects it covers. To me, referring to the subject as “Westbrook” obviates any discrepancy in understanding that may arise for a reader, while also satisfying those who wish to avoid masculine pronouns. I believe the best example of what I'm referring to can be found under WP:GENDER:

The Manual of Style section on gender-neutral language states, "Use gender-neutral language where this can be done with clarity and precision." Situations this does not apply to include:
(...)

  • When the subject prefers a gendered term. This includes a woman preferring a masculine term, for example: "From 1998 to 2000, she [Esther Dyson] was the founding chairman [not chairwoman or chairperson] of ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers."

So you’re saying this policy applies here, to the case of a man preferring feminine terms? Justinwsk (talk) 02:10, 27 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That is correct.
