Jimbo semi-retired?

I have undone that edit to User:Jimbo Wales. I find that a bold conclusion that he is '(semi-)retired', he may just not have much time, be on holiday, do his work elsewhere on Wikipedia (other wikis, or even behind the scenes). I don't even think that not editing outside of his user-talk (and in the last 100 edits there are 4 mainspace edits, and edits to talkpages) make someone (semi-)retired either. Thanks! --Dirk Beetstra T C 19:28, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Hey Jinkinson! I've been seeing a lot of cryptocurrency-related articles on Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Internet their are over 5 cryptocurrency-related articles up for deletion, I'm not sure if this is a problem, but since many lack notability it's becoming a problem. International Sweatpants Day

Hello Jinkinson! Could you please tell me in brief why you doubt on the sources of information for this article is unrelieable. Thank you in advance. Mohammadnasiruddin (talk) 00:50, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, Facebook isn't a reliable or independent source. See WP:RS and WP:GNG. However, it seems as though dw.de is in fact a reliable source (at least in Germany). Accordingly, I have removed the proposed deletion tag, as some of the article's sources are reliable. However, we are now left with an even bigger problem-- it seems that a significant part of this (admittedly very short) article was a copyright violation of one of the cited sources, and I have tagged it as such. In the future, please try to write things in your own words. Jinkinson talk to me 01:07, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

International Sweatpants Day

Hey, I've removed your copyvio tag on International Sweatpants Day because you didn't list it at Wikipedia:Copyright problems. I've replaced it with a CSD tag for WP:CSD#A7 and WP:CSD#G12. Cheers, Michaelzeng7 (talk) 03:53, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, and sorry for not listing it there. I'm rather new to this copyvio tagging thing (outside of the CSD, anyway), so hopefully I won't make this mistake in the future. Jinkinson talk to me 03:55, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Removal of Citation message

Hi, in the section of page Boar, Boar#Mythology, it is asking citations for showing that Vishnu took avatar of Varaha, a boar. So i had already inserted book sources, but the citation message is still not removed for a substantial time since. Though this is small thing, but you can fix this and mention if the sources put are not reliable. Work2win (talk) 20:53, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, if there is a citation for a statement in this article, as there clearly is here (in fact, there are 4), and no one else will remove the citation needed tag, you can just do so yourself. I have removed it for you here, though. Jinkinson talk to me 20:56, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Very thanking for your very speedy reply, well i didn't removed the citation message because i had thought citation message should be removed by an editor, admin, etc. but not by an autoconfirmed user(like me), since the citation message might be useful for removing any error, or fault in the page. Anyway i have got the answer. Work2win (talk) 21:24, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Not entirely sure if that should be an A1 or an A3 since it has plenty of context, just no good content. I would have marked that one except I wasn't sure what it should be :D Usb10 plug me in 00:25, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Good point. I myself wasn't sure either, and you can change the rationale. A1 is basically the one I use when it is clearly eligible for speedy deletion, but I'm not sure which template to use. Jinkinson talk to me 00:27, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Jinkinson, the article CFDCalc created by me was deleted. Can you kindly provide me the text for my own record? Thanks! --Chenyiaero (talk) 18:39, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

No I cannot, because only administrators can view or restore deleted content, and as it states at the top of this page, I am not an administrator. You might want to go to WP:UND instead if you think this website was notable. Also, you should be prepared to add reliable sources to the article if it gets restored. Nomination of Administrators (Wikipedia) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Administrators (Wikipedia) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Administrators (Wikipedia) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:38, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi, that picture of me was actually taken this month, not in 2005. I changed the date on the picture to make it "float" to the bottom of my Flickr pictures so that no one could find it there ... So much for that!. Thanks, Jeffrey Beall (talk) 20:06, 27 January 2014 (UTC).

AfD

Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, as you did with Logo of Wikipedia. It was the correct link, and if you had clicked on it, you would have seen that. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:51, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Sorry, I guess. It depends on how you define "correct," though--the link was clearly to an AFD for the article Administrators (Wikipedia), not Logo of Wikipedia, and I was under the impression that if you wanted to nominate two or more pages for deletion you had to create a separate AFD for each of them. However, it seems that, in fact, you can nominate 5 articles for deletion in only one AFD discussion. Now that I know this, I will be more careful looking at articles nominated for deletion in the future. Jinkinson talk to me 21:56, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
I've seen upwards of 20 nominated in bulk, in cases where the reason for it is identical (generally, also the author and timeframe is also identical, but not always). It's not common, but it's not at all rare. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:10, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for January 28

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Timothy Ball, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page The Telegraph (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 08:59, 28 January 2014 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Timothy Ball, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. jps (talk) 18:57, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Well, it's out of article space now. I hope you're happy, Joshua. Jinkinson talk to me 19:10, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Timothy Ball

You just beat me to removing the db tag from the userfied page. My reason for userfying is the close of the DRV at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2011 January 3. This clearly envisages that a new article could be acceptable, but I think you should check it out with HJ Mitchell (talk) and/or NuclearWarfare (talk) before it goes live. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:16, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

The article Ashdin Publishing has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable publisher. Just being on Beall's list is not enough to make a publisher notable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiCup 2014 January newsletter

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the signups open for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), whose set of 14 featured pictures, the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in The Core Contest; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Wikipedia's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. New article for Baring Asset Management

Hi Jinkinson, first of all a big thank you for your revision and acceptance of the new article for Baring Asset Management. I really appreciate your approval. Unfortunately, I've spotted a typo in the company's name - it's 'Baring Asset Management' not 'Barings Asset Management'. Could you please correct it? There could be a tech issue with this as the relevant link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baring_Asset_Management is currently redirected to the Mass Mutual article. WikiCup 2014 February newsletter

And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Wikipedia. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in Treasury Note (1890–91).
  2. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions), a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist William Russell Flint's work.
  3. United States WikiRedactor (submissions), another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include Sky Ferreira, Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus and "Wrecking Ball" (Miley Cyrus song).

Other competitors of note include:

After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Arbitration enforcement warning: Climate change

Please carefully read the following notice:

This message is to inform you that the Arbitration Committee has authorised discretionary sanctions for topics relating to Climate change, which you may have edited. The Committee's decision can be read here.

Discretionary sanctions are intended to prevent further disruption to a topic which has already been significantly disrupted. In practical terms, this means that uninvolved administrators may impose sanctions for any conduct, within or relating to the topic, which fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, expected standards of behavior and applicable policies. The sanctions may include editing restrictions, topic bans, or blocks. Before making any more edits to this topic area, please familiarise yourself with the discretionary sanctions system as sanctions can be imposed without further warning. Please do not hesitate to contact me or any other editor if you have any questions.

Please announce any new scientists that you add to List of scientists opposing the mainstream scientific assessment of global warming on the article talk page. It would be more productive to discuss them first but at least provide notice on talk and your reasons for adding them if you choose to edit first. --DHeyward (talk) 22:52, 1 March 2014 (UTC)

Jinkinson, I have no problem with eds adding scientists along with RSs per conventional BRD protocol, ie waiting for the R to happen before initiating talk. I also don't see harm in D's personal request to talk first nor his alerting you about DS. But In my view combining them in a single edit gives an impression that not honoring his personal pref re adding new nerds might be sanction able, which is not at all how I understand the DS system. in sum, we have had disagreements and I appreciate your attention to the process. as for D's request I don't care either way, personally.NewsAndEventsGuy (talk) 12:20, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Murry Salby requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

DHeyward (talk) 23:00, 2 March 2014 (UTC)

The article Murry Salby has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable academic/scientis. A7 was rejected but with no notability argument. There appears to be below threshold without any peer reviewed articles cited or noteworthy contributions. Article focuses on the negative aspect that he was fired because of failing to perform academic duties. It fails on multiple levels including NN, attack page, etc.

Speedy deletion declined: Robert Mayhew (curler)

Hello Jinkinson, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Robert Mayhew (curler), a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: the named events are a sufficient claim of importance to deny A7 (but probably not AfD). You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:34, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for March 6

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Larry Vardiman, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Christian Heritage College (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Passive smoking, non-MedRS?

Your Medref tagging edit on Passive smoking seems unjustified, as I understand the MedRS requirements. Could you raise more specific concerns on the talk page please. RDBrown (talk) 01:53, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

Thanks, Dr James confirmed your judgment of the two refs, tagging immediately above them with a primary source comment would have made that clear (if that worked). ... I didn't see a better tag to use when I looked at the templates. RDBrown (talk) 12:40, 7 March 2014 (UTC)

International College Notable Alumni

Faysal Ruwayha is a graduate of International College & was a Project Controller for the United nations for 23 years, in charge of improving all aspects of rural living standards in North & South Yemen, Lebanon, Syria & Jordan. Some projects included the financing of rural roads, schools, clinics, etc. The components of each project addressed the immediate needs of women, men & children which included starting fisheries, growing crops, teaching people how to raise poultry. He met with the impoverished individuals face to face & traveled to Washington, D.C., New York City, Rome, Italy & other destinations in order to secure the funding to provide the basic necessities that most people take for granted such as water, electricity & roads.

I would like to state that the above info is very important as Mr. Ruwayha has helped the world greatly. Please let me know how this may be added under notable alumni.

Most respectfully, Seekofjustice. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Seekerofjustice (talkcontribs) 18:47, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

It may well be true that Ruwayha has done many helpful and altruistic things. However, this is not sufficient to justify having a Wikipedia article about him--for that you would need coverage in independent reliable sources (see WP:BIO). Also see WP:NOBLE for more about how someone doing many generous things doesn't necessarily mean they should have a page on Wikipedia.

Also, you can't add him under notable alumni until you have demonstrated that he should have an article as per what I said above. Jinkinson talk to me 18:53, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Salby background content

Hi, I certainly needed background overview to help explain what his work was about. Sometimes Wikipedia articles have a "___ for dummies" explanation and I was looking to emulate that spirit. Trying to summarize a complex field in a few paragraphs. Sportfan5000 (talk) 23:54, 10 March 2014 (UTC)

Okay, I guess that might make sense if the "Background" section contained more than one sentence about Salby's actual research, appended to a huge chunk of science-y stuff which covers pretty much every possible atmospheric science-related topic there is. If you are sure that a background section is needed here, you should, in my opinion, whittle it down to stuff that actually pertains to Salby's research and leave out as much else as possible. Jinkinson talk to me 23:59, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Well that's in process, as it will take some time to find experts who will help work through his dozens of papers, determine which are most cited/significant, then write it all up. I'm hoping that will happen, but who knows when. Sportfan5000 (talk) 00:43, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

Nomination of Jorge Azar for deletion

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jorge Azar until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Okay... So why are you telling me this? Jinkinson talk to me 13:55, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

  • You prodded this in January. It's standard practice to inform editors who have been involved in an article when there's an AfD discussion for that article. JNW (talk) 14:28, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Alright, I guess that makes sense, but only if your definition of "involved" is much broader than mine--I consider "involved" to mean that the user either created the article or wrote a significant chunk of its content. In other words, just tagging a page doesn't indicate that you care about its subject. Jinkinson talk to me 14:40, 11 March 2014 (UTC)

You have repeatedly removed my edit to the page on Kary Mullis, in which I provide links for his rebuttal to comments on his Wiki page. Why don't you want readers to have access to his side of the story and make up their own minds? This seems un-scientific and downright denialist to prevent "the accused" to defend himself. If you disagree with the man or his views that is your right, but he should have an opportunity to defend himself against slander on his own Wiki page. If you continue to remove my edit I will report you for vandalism, but I would be very interested in your rationale for removing my posts considering you appear to be active and enthusiastic about Wikepedia as a medium for the exchange of ideas. (talk)

Wait a minute. Did you make the IP's edit above while logged out? Jinkinson talk to me 02:05, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Autism omnibus

I see you changed the article title and concentrated on Cedillo, the only problem with this is the other 2 cases listed under decisions seem to appear from nowhere. This needs to be rewritten to at least explain that the other 2 cases were part of 3 overall. I know where they came from but to the uninitiated it's out of left field. --Daffydavid (talk) 00:09, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
