May 2014[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia. I saw that you edited or created Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Steve Mould, and I noticed that your username, "FlickMorrisPR", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Trammel Museum of Art". However, you are invited to use a username that contains such a name if it identifies you personally, such as "Mark at WidgetsUSA", "Jack Smith at the XY Foundation", and "WidgetFan87". Please also note that Wikipedia does not allow accounts to be shared by multiple people, and that you may not advocate for or promote any company, group, organization, product, or website, regardless of your username. Moreover, I recommend that you read our conflict of interest guideline. If you are a single individual and are willing to contribute to Wikipedia in an unbiased manner, please create a new account or request a username change that complies with our username policy. If you believe that your username does not violate our policy, please leave a note here explaining why. Thank you. Katieh5584 (talk) 13:32, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am just a person. Flick Morris is my name and PR is what I do. Very happy to change username if that's a problem?

If that's you name it's OK, however you are not allowed to use Wikipedia to promote any of your clients.Katieh5584 (talk) 13:44, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I doubt there's any chance of me using wikipedia to do anything. I simply don't understand how.

Hi Katie, I understand I'm not allowed to add anything that's my opinion but if I'm just updating factual information what is the problem? Thanks

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended for publicity and/or promotional purposes. If you intend to edit constructively in other topic areas, you may be granted the right to continue under a change of username. Please read the following carefully.
Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, website or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not, although if you can demonstrate a pattern of future editing in strict accordance with our neutral point of view policy, you may be granted this right. See Wikipedia's FAQ for Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit Wikipedia again.

What can I do now?

If you have no interest in writing about some other topic than your organization, group, company, or product, you may consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

If you want corrections and improvements to be made, or concerns to be considered, we will always take seriously reports about possible unlawful content, defamation, minors at risk, copyright violation, and privacy breach. However any other requests must meet our content policies - we won't consider requests if not. As a simple guide, changes of a promotional nature are almost always refused, but genuine errors, omissions, unbalanced and non-neutral coverage, and outdated facts may sometimes be accepted if other editors agree with you.

If you do intend to make useful contributions here about some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
    • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
    • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block by adding the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} below, but you should read the guide to appealing blocks first.

Requested username:

Request reason:

I understand I am not allowed to use a company name as my username and am happy to use my name instead. I had previously included my profession as I believe transparency is important online. I have no intention of using the site for promotion or adding any unverifiable or unbalanced information. I simply wish to correct outdated facts and create a page for a TV presenter whose work on UK TV and radio makes him worthy of note. I'm sure if you look at my submitted new article and edits you'll see they were balanced, factual and had verifiable sources. I am brand new to wikipedia and I know I've made some mistakes but I'm keen to take advice from other editors if my account can be unblocked.

Accept reason:

The new username is acceptable, and I'm unblocking your account to allow you to change it - please put a request in at Wikipedia:Changing username as soon as possible to avoid re-blocking. Please note that editing with a conflict of interest - particularly when you are receiving financial compensation for doing so - is heavily frowned upon here. As such, I am recommending that you avoid writing about your clients on Wikipedia, at least until you've been here for a couple of months and have a good idea of how things work. After that, as long as you stick to the best practice guidelines for COI editors, you should be okay. I agree that your contributions so far seem to have been appropriate, but I would suggest that you use the {{request edit}} function on pages where you have a professional relationship with the subject. If there's any hint of your account adding promotional material directly to an article about one of your clients then you are liable to end up blocked again - making recommendations on talkpages will avoid this. On any other topic, you are of course free to edit however you like. Yunshui  12:39, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Yunshui - I will apply for new username as soon as I'm unblocked. That's a great tip about making recommendations on talkpages too, I didn't know that was an option but will certainly give that a go. Thanks so much for your help and advice, hugely appreciated!

I do apologise; I neglected to actually unblock your account after placing that message. I've now rectified that omission; you should find that you can edit freely again. Sorry about that. Yunshui  14:26, 2 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
