Basque Country

List of official languages by country

I'm not sure if you have any idea about what the Chinese languages is like.. The spoken and written languages are two different things. There are many mutually not intelligible spoken languages, but sharing the same writing standard. Mandarin is the official spoken language used nationalwide. In the case of Hong Kong and Macau Chinese is official according to laws, whereas Cantonese and Mandarin are both de facto official spoken languages. — Instantnood 07:25, September 3, 2005 (UTC)

For the list of official languages, I assume we are not only talking about spoken languages, but written languages as well. For the PRC, Chinese is the official written language, and Standard Mandarin is the official spoken language. I am not going to further argue on writing systems, for I agree that is a list of languages. The trouble with Chinese is that it is many spoken languages, but one written language. You appear to misunderstand the difference between the word state and the word country. Please do your homework before blanket deletions of other peoples work. It would not do you any harm at all to read up more about the (very odd) constitutional situation in the UK: United Kingdom, Constituent Countries, Home Nations, British Isles (terminology).--Mais oui! 10:45, 9 September 2005 (UTC)

Languages in RoM

You can check the Republic of Macedonia article - the languages that are co-official are Albanian, Turkish, Serbian, and Romany. These are official only in those municipalities where the ethnic group who speaks the relevant language constitute a significant minority (that is, at least 20% of the inhabitants of that municipality). Because Albanian is spoken by more than 20% of the citizens of the Republic of Macedonia, it is spoken in the parliament, but the Chairman cannot run the session in Albanian. I really don't know which municipalities have co-official languages. I googled for info, but all I found out was the number of municipalities that have co-official (and the names of the municipalities where Turkish, Romany, and Serbian is in co-official use). Namely:

  • Macedonian - The Macedonian language is official statewide regardless of the number of ethnic Macedonians in a certain municipality.
  • Albanian - it is co-official in 29 of the 84 municipalities, located in the western and northwestern parts of the country. It is also spoken in the Parliament.
  • Turkish - it is co-official in 4 of the 84 municipalities, located in the western part of the country
  • Romany - it is co-official in one municipality, this is the Suto Orizari municipality, located north of Skopje.
  • Serbian - it is co-official in one municipality, this is the Cucer-Sandevo municipality, located north of Skopje, as well.

The last two municipalities (Suto Orizari, and Cucer Sandevo) are actually trilingual, because, alongside Macedonian, Albanian is also co-official there.

The Bosnian and the Aromanian language are sometimes used in NGO pamphlets, but they, at the moment have no official status in none of these municipalities (these ethnic minorities are small, and dispersed throughout the country).

Mormonism and Christianity

Z, I agree with your statement that the majority of Christian churches do not view Mormonism as Christian. But it is a fascinating to study why they believe it is not Christian. Much boils down to the Mormonism's rejection of the concept of the Trinity as initally defined at the Council of Nicea in 325. How does a church determine that regardless of one's belief in Christ, which is the Bible's description of a believer or Christian evolve into "you must believe as I do or you are not Christian". Though I find it fascinating, I also find it very sad. How many times to we persecute other religions before we learn that as we persecute we depart from the Spirit of Christ.

Back to the issue, should it be included; Yes, it should. BUT, it should not be in the introductory paragraphs. It should follow later in the article where other conflicting information is introduced in order to be balanced.

If I seemed abrupt, please forgive me. I have been on the receiving end of persecution too often by "Christians". I need to be more humble. Regardless, I hope to see your continued edits. Storm Rider 06:36, 7 October 2005 (UTC)

Terrorism

Just to let you know before you revert--I removed two attacks you added to the List of terrorist incidents page: the militant attacks in Thailand and the truck bombing in Iraq. Not because I don't think they aren't terrorism, but because I don't think they are significant enough to be listed. There have been many more attacks in southern Thailand that have killed more people than the ones you listed, and there have been dozens of car bombings in Iraq with more deaths than the one you put on. Since they happen so frequently in those countries, we should only list very significant attacks or ones with very high number of casualties (such as the Hillah bombings, the Mussayib one, the Palestine Hotel, etc.). I put this on the "Accidents and Incidents on airliners" talk page, but I'll repeat it here since you seem to be adding most of the crashes in question: I propose that we "clean up" the Accidents/Incidents page and remove most of the relatively minor crashes from 2005. I'm not saying they're not "important" with respect to those who died, but I'm saying that in the general scheme of things (history), they're not notable. Other events, such as the Air France or the JetBlue incidents, are somewhat notable (see they're pages as to why). PBP 01:59, 7 December 2005 (UTC)

Re:Taiwan vs. ROC

Nope, there's no policy that I know of that states whether Taiwan/ROC should be under 'C' or 'T'. That's probably why we have a group of users edit-warring over the matter. The closest thing we have is Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Chinese), which prescibes the use of "Republic of China", but does not say where in the alphabet it belongs. I personally think it should go under 'T' since the "Republic of China" is most commonly referred to as "Taiwan" and that's where people would be looking, but I don't quite feel strongly about this enough to do anything. I am aware of that discussion page and constantly monitor it, but I don't see any discussion on what Alanmak is doing, i.e., alphabetizing Taiwan under "c" for "China, Republic of". Note that you should not include countries in your image if the cases are not confirmed by official reports by OIE (animal cases) or WHO. Please don't hurry just because you hear journalist reports. Many informations are not confirmed, just suspected: avian flu actually exists since many centuries, and have caused outbreaks throughout the history, including in the USA (Pennsylvania, New Yord State, California, Maryland...), many of them being of H2 and H7 genotypic types, many being highly pathogenic in birds, but not being of type H5N1. Even so, H5N1 is not deminstrated to be dangerous for humans, unlike the seasonnal flu which is often of type H2 or H7. The various flu reservoirs exists throughout the world.
So consult the OIE and WHO official reports: between a suspected outbreak and confirmation we need at least 2weeksfor the first test (at that time a first suspcisionreport will be published by OIE), and 2 other weeks for the confirmation. For human cases, a death is not a proof by itself. There are tens of thousands of humans dying every day in the world for various reasons. Thanks. Verdy P 22:39, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

It is my understanding that the inclusion of a template on a page puts a tiny extra bit of strain on the Wikipedia servers (see WP:SUBST#Reasons to substitute) - generally not much to complain of, but this particular template is used on over 6,000 pages, so that load seems unnecessary. In response to your message

Well, please first stop pushing your own point of view. Whether Cantonese, Mandarin, Taiwanese, Shanghainese, Hunanese are separate languages, or dialects of the same language is controversial, and still does not have a conclusion accepted by all people. This is discussed in the article Identification of the varieties of Chinese. The phrases "Cantonese Chinese" and "Mandarin Chinese" do exist. In the section for the People's Republic of China in the article List of official languages by state, you can see that there are a whole bunch of minority languages that are official and are not Chinese language(s). The word "Chinese" is used to distinguish those languages/dialects that are actually Chinese. Also, a lot of people who have no background in this topic at all would intuitively think that the official language of China is, of course, Chinese. But it is surprising that they can't find "Chinese" under the section for the People's Republic of China in that article. The word "Chinese" in "Mandarin Chinese" and "Cantonese Chinese" has certain importance in this particular article.

For the issue about Taiwan, whether "Taiwan" is the short name of the Republic of China is also under disputed in the talk pages of some other articles. "Greece" can be undisputably used as a short name for "Hellenic Republic" in Wikipedia, because even the Olympic Games use the name "Greece" to the national team of Greece, but "Taiwan" is not called "Taiwan" in the Olympic Games. The case of "Taiwan" has more politics behind. The fact that "Taiwan" is not referred to as "Taiwan" in Olympic Games and the Soccer World Cup, and the fact that the United Nations have to refer to the Taiwan Area as "Taiwan, Province of China" show that it is pretty disputable to use "Taiwan" as the name of a nation. Besides that, the Government of the Republic of China is recognized as the government of "China", instead of the government of "Taiwan", by the Holy See. It is, therefore, not precise to call it "Taiwan". Furthermore, putting "Taiwan" as a nation is somehow offensive to the supporters of the pan-blue coalition in Taiwan, and the supporters of Chinese reunification. I have suggested, in the talk page of another article, that the short names "China, P.R." and "China, R.O." would be more neutral, as they are just the initials of the official names. This is consistent with the short names "Korea, R.O." and "Korea, D.P.R.". The case for Taiwan is, to a certain extent, analogous to the case of Korea. The division of both China and Korea are results of civil wars during the Cold War era (See Chinese Civil War). "Taiwan" is the name of a province before (and actually after, see Taiwan Province) the division of China. It doesn't make sense to refer to North Korea as "Korea", and then refer to South Korea as "Jeju", right? - Alanmak 10:55, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: [1] - ROC's terminolgy for what is called Standard Mandarin on Wikipedia is Kuo-yü, which literal meaning is "state speech", i.e. "national language". I woke up this morning, and I found 50 more currencies now have infoboxes! Thank you! I thought nobody was gonna help me. By the way, have you read the instruction? There are many optional properties you can specify when appropriate. And you don't have to put "http://" for websites, as it is automatically added when the infobox renders. Hello again. I appreciate your effort of adding currency infoboxes, which is what I always want to do too. I would like to ask you the following simple things, just to ensure the consistency.

  1. It is ok to put coins of subunits and coins of main unit on the same line. You might as well save some space if they fit in one line
  2. If the infobox has a wiki link or external link to the central bank, remove duplicate entry in the article's "See also" and "External link section"
  3. Bypass redirect, like [[Dollar sign|$]]
  4. Sometime CIA's inflation figures are not 2005 estimate
  5. Use rarely_used_* only if you're very sure. Normally only the people who have lived there (including tourism) would know.

Of course, I am open to suggestions. Thanks for making things better! =)

List of notable accidents and incidents on commercial aircraft - tense reversion

Hi Zntrip, FWIW I support your last reversion. As I mentioned a while back on the Talk page, I think we need consistency in tenses (and other style issues). My own personal preference for this type of chronological list is to use present tense as it sounds more dynamic, flowing and interesting. I proposed this in July, and should have followed up and didn't, since I saw no responses, yea nay, whatsoever. A short time later I added this combined suggestion, which also fizzled out for lack of sufficient response. And of course there is the ongoing inclusion debate, which is another issue. But getting back to standardized style, I agree that we should try to get a clear consensus, then add the style guide at the top of the article (or whatever convention is used by WP for List styles). I certainly don't want to go and edit the whole article one way and then have someone revert all that work, so we must have clear consensus. If you want to move forward on this, count me in. Symbol for florins

I believe that ƒ is the symbol for both. But I must point out that xe, while I trust more than other average sites, made a mistake on Chinese renminbi, Hong Kong dollar, and New Taiwan dollar. 元 and 圓 are both "yuan" and therefore the full name of the unit in Chinese. They are not symbols. I am a Chinese so I know that for a fact. I have reverted many attempts to place 元 and 圓 as symbols, on the list of circulating, or on the individual articles themselves. 2006 Tonga riots

I'm disturbed by some of the changes you made to this article. You removed references to Sione Langi's pictures (youths in "gangsta" attire, "Warlords" spraypainted on looted shop) and replaced them with generalizations. Since the evidence for what I wrote is right there in the pictures, I don't see why you would remove the detail. I also do not understand why you claim that the crowd was attacking the royal palace. None of the news sources I've read say anything at all about that. They attacked the Prime Minister's office, but that's NOT the palace.

Euro sign/punctuation

You removed the punctuation infobox from the Euro sign article, claiming the Euro sign is not punctuation. The Euro sign is, however, in the infobox itself, as well as the dollar, pound, yen etc. signs. For consistency and common sense, this means that either the infobox should be in the Euro sign article or that all currency signs should be removed from the infobox and related articles.

Can I ask why you reverted my edits? I don't think templates belong in main namespace categories (that is, categories which are designed for readers rather than editors). I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. My point is that the template should not be in the categories. It is not a circulating currency, or a currency of wherever. I removed Template:Currencies of Oceania from Category:Circulating currencies beacuse of Ingrid’s concern voiced here. She was advocating removing templates from main namespace categories. Covers

There is a precedent set by articles such as Knockin' On Heaven's Door to put it all on one page. I personally think it's ridiculous to have an article for every single cover version of a song (see List of songs covered by Pearl Jam - having a page for each of those would be silly!). Some users do have issues with this (see the Hellraiser (song) page for a merge discussion currently taking place), but I would merge the articles.

  • MCR has started the 3rd leg of their Black Parade tour. Their supporting act for this leg is Muse. The tour is currently scheduled to end in mid-May.
  • MCR's 4th single off The Black Parade, Teenagers, was pushed back. It will now be released May 1st.
  • Mikey will be taking time off the tour for a honeymoon. His replacement will be Matt Cortez. Cortez will play bass for the rest of the US and Canada shows.
  • It was recently confirmed by guitarist Ray Toro that MCR will headline the Projekt Revolution tour, along with Linkin Park, HIM, Saosin, and other yet to be announced bands.

  • Teenagers was recently confirmed to be the 4th single off The Black Parade.
  • Orfen proposed a major revamping of the project which was carried out by multiple members of the project. For further news and information please visit the project talk page.

Parentheses? I don't remember anything about using a ( ... whatever. I'd like to know why you argue that the edits by me from my IP address were not credible considering the fact that you distinguish "CD single" from "CD" (quite obviously, you prefer the latter and I prefer the former) yet you continue to leave "7" vinyl" intact. That's contradictory considering 7" vinyl is distinguishing the type of gramophone record, which I see you've linked to, and thus, to remain consistent, you'd have to re-type that as "Vinyl record" like you did with CD single and CD. 210.50.189.37 09:31, 4 June 2007 (UTC)

Vitalmove has not provided a single source establishing that Mark Levine is in anyway associated with Press TV. Levine's "nationally syndicated" talkshow and radio show are both made through public access. Oddly enough, I know him personally. He is not notable at all. Bolding links in List of notable accidents and incidents on commercial aircraft

Thanks for re-proposing bolding the links to the various articles on the list page. I had actually started on it back in March and had completed about 2/3 of the bolding before it was reverted by another editor (I guess because I was an unfamiliar face on the page). Out of frustration, I hadn't bothered to visit the page again until recently and was pleasantly surprised to see the bold links again. In any event, I think it makes the list much more useful. Having the catalogue numbers in numismatic articles is very useful, as there are some people who cannot afford to buy the books themselves. Here's a typical example of an article based on one of these books; Banknotes of the Swakopmund Bookshop (South West Africa). Why do you keep reverting the quotation marks used on My Chemical Romance discography? They are not wrong... I know why I change them to ", because those quotes are more commonly used then the other, more slanty ones. I know you said you copy and paste them from the archived version (I don't know if you did on this page, or not), but it's hardly "copy and pasting from the archived version" if you consistently change it back... and you even said before you didn't care about how they looked; so, if you don't care, leave them? List of circulating currencies

I am disturbed by your edits to list of circulating currencies, specifically the removal of the entry of “Palestine”. If you bothered to look at the source, which you claimed did not mention the Palestinian territories, you would have found that the “Gaza Strip” and “West Bank” are both listed as using the Israeli new sheqel and the latter as also using the Jordanian dinar. If you have any objections to the content of the page, I suggest you leave a comment on its talk page. In addition, claiming that information is not sourced does not warrant its removal, especially if it is in fact true. – Zntrip 03:02, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Zntrip. I was just wondering why you removed the wikidate formatting from the "Mama" article? When a full date is used, hcard formatting of the wikidate should always be used. I also wonder why you removed the label the album's being released under?
