I notice that an editor has undone your update, because you did not cite a Reliable Source, such as a national newspaper, an academic journal article, or a textbook. Without a source, other editors cannot Verify that your update is correct, so we have no choice but to revert and await a suitable source.

Suitable sources for sales figures[edit]

Hi, I quite understand your eagerness to insert some sales figures, but we can't allow desire to override reliability. I alluded to this above but you seem not to have noticed the message, so let me be a little more explicit.

For some reason, the publishers of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings have been very reluctant to publish the actual figures. If you think about it for a moment, you'll realize that real figures will state US sales for 2021, by hardback, paperback, audiobook... and UK sales in the same way, and translations, and foreign sales in English editions (India, Australia...).

What we'd like, obviously, would be a cumulative graph of all sales in all years since 1937, presumably with a spike around the time of Jackson's films. Well, we haven't got the data, and jumping at any blog or dodgy news site that doesn't mind repeating a suspiciously round number with no supporting details, date, or provenance ... is not the answer. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:03, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
