Hi Yurik! In the Otto Gross article you wrote, that Sophie Benz was pregnant. Where did you find this?

Wrong Link

Hi Yurik! On 29. July 06 you introduced the link "simple:Driverless car" to the German Wikipedia article about "Fahrerloses Transportfahrzeug (FTF)" (http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fahrerloses_Transportfahrzeug&action=history). This is not correct (as a FTF is not used for transporting any person), it should be linked to "Automatic Guided Vehicle (AGV)" - unfortunately this does not exist in simple English. I already modified the "normal english" link to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automated_Guided_Vehicle
Best regards, Thomas 153.96.188.2 19:12, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I am sorry the link was made to the incorrect article, but the bot simply copied that link from somewhere else. Please read Bot FAQ on why it happens and how to make sure it never happens again. --Yurik 19:16, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Query.php

Hey Yurik, I'm assuming you're the right one to come to about problems with query.php. I recently wrote some routines that used the "revisions" method of query.php; however, they now longer work due to the way that revisions are now being rendered. Previously, each revision item would display as "<rv revid=...."; however, now each property of the revision (user, oldid, etc.) displays as a child of the parent <rv> object. I'm wondering if there is a way to retrieve it in the old format, or if I need to do a complete rewrite on the routine--and if I do a complete rewrite, I also wonder how long it will be until I need to rewrite again to account for a new format. Anyway, please get back to me, and I would really love it if I could somehow get data in the format. In any case, I absolutely love query.php and am apreciative of all your work on Wikipedia. AmiDaniel (talk) 05:54, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads up! I added an ability to request the content of the revision, and broke the formatting. The code is checked in and should be back to way it was shortly. The only difference is that now comment has been moved from the rv element to comment attribute (comment is only present if you have rvcomments parameter present). --Yurik 13:53, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, okay. I see now what happened. Thanks for your quick response. That rvcontent operator is pretty nifty. Not sure I have any use for it, but I do like it. Oh, and while I'm here, I was wondering if there was some form of an "action=purge" operator that I could use when loading the query.php. I've had some problems where, once I've read the history from the page, when I go to read it again it will appear the same until I do a refresh. It's not that big of a deal, but it would be nice if I could load the actualized history each time. Thanks again for your help. AmiDaniel (talk) 23:49, 7 June 2006 (UTC)
The data comes directly from the slave databases, no caching is involved as far as i know. --Yurik 01:37, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Military Patrol at the 1924 Winter Olympics

I have managed to find additional information for this event along with the 1928, 1936, and 1948 Winter Olympics for the Military Patrol, and I plan on putting this in with the Biathlon. The question I have is should the military patrol be counted on the Biathlon medal count for all events or for 1924 only? Your thoughts? Hi - I just found out that somebody on da: got confused with the cars Morris Minor and Morris Mini. The Mini was described with both names under artickle name Morris Minor. :-(
I have now moved this to da:Morris Mini and I'm about to make an NEW artickle da:Morris Minor, translated from en:Wiki. Make sure you do not link with a disambig page - bot automatically tries to get rid of regular->disambig links (although it still only operates with links people give it on all pages). I will have to look closer at that page later to see if this was the case. --Yurik 13:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Time frame

I just linked all of the EN sura articles to their KU counterparts initiating the first interwiki figuring that eventually a bot like this would create all of the necessary interwikis on the KU wiki. However, I just noticed id:Templat:Qur'an which is a template that lists the suras on ID and that some of those articles were created on May 2, 2006 and they have not been added to EN although they link to EN which is the first connection needed for the bot. My question was... how long do these things take (I don't particularly want to do it manually since doing about 100 suras from EN to KU was no fun)... or, should I initiate a request that all of the articles linked to from ku:Sûre and id:Templat:Qur'an be parsed? or does it just take a few months sometimes? gren グレン 19:22, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

If i understood you correctly, you added links from EN to another site and no links were created. As you can see on my user page, yurikbot has no bot status on KU (which you can help me obtain by visiting meta page and stating your support. Also, Pages such as Sura have interwiki conflicts, as you can see here: [6]. Please help resolve it, so that later i can go throw them with the bot and it will already know the answers. Thanks! --Yurik 01:34, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
When I clicked 2 to move the NL list it wouldn't move... I think I resolved it... (I may have submitted more than once)... The problem is there's an arbitrary distinction between list of suras and sura... most languages have the list on sura but some split it up... I hope I properly commented on the bot requests page. gren グレン 02:50, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

From the german Wiki: Schrein des Buches

Hello Yurik. As I know the "Shrine of the book" is only a part of the Israel Museum. You translated my hebrew and english bots in "Israel Museum" (en) and מוזיאון ישראל (he) instead of "Shrine of the book" (the article exists by the way also in the english Wiki) and היכל הספר. I suppose you know the difference between the Israel Museum and the shrine. Why did you change the bots? Please answer it here or on my discussion site. Thanx Trinityfolium

Yurik
You changed it again, I can't understand it. And why don't you answer my question here or on my discussion site?? I also don't have an english ID, but perhaps it helps if I leave my ID here as a Link: User:Trinityfolium
I'm anyway a bit confused. In the english Wiki it exists an article Shrine of the Book, and the hebrew bot IS he:היכל הספר. So WHY did you change my bots, when they are correct? So I have to revert your changes. I'm sorry.
Please bring some light in this discussion, otherwise we change it and change it. This can't be the solution, in my eyes. Greez Trinityfolium
Sorry for not answering, although your question is answered in the FAQ above -- all the rules the bot uses to change pages. Bot is not smart, it only changes according to what people tell it. It tries to ignore disambiguation pages if it has a real page instead, but in general - if there is a linked page anywhere, it will be included. So when you change one page, it does not reflect in the other pages. Please see the FAQ, and let me know if you still have questions. --Yurik 15:26, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
Hello Yurik
Okay, accepted. I changed the other sites too, see the hebrew and the english version for it. So I hope all ist correct now. Thanx for answering, I didn't see the FAQ. Now it's much more clear for me. If it's okay for you I beg you not to change the article anymore, because in my opinion the links should be right now. I also included the link it:Israel Museum to complete the bots. For me it's important that the english and german version are of the same kind.
Have a nice day and thank you. Trinityfolium
As I explained in FAQ - the bot just follows what is in the pages. I shouldn't create a blacklist of pages not to be edited, as that would defeat the purpose of the linking. Any errors should be fixed, on all sites at once (i am still working on the program to help with that). --Yurik 17:35, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

From the german Wiki: Desoxyribonukleinsäure

Dear Yurik, your bot unfortunately changed the German abbreviation / acronym "DNS" to "DNA" in many cases, seemingly to resolve some conflict which maybe you see being there. Couldn't this be kind of arrogant? Unlike many Germans, I like my language, and so I like to use the German acronym "DNS" on a German Wikipedia page instead of the English "DNA", regardless of its international use. In my opinion - and this is a discussion page, so opinions do count - this should be common practice on language-specific Wikipedia pages. Is this only _my_ opinion? Couldn't a bot of such enormous influence be a questionable thing? (I only have a German Wikipedia account "Lb9000", so here I am anonymous). --80.246.32.40 11:31, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi lb9000,
The bot, unlike most people, have no inteligence, nor knowledge of what DNS or DNA is. It follows links from page to page, and links them. See FAQ above. If it linked the pages, some human thought they are the same. --Yurik 19:03, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

There were to files from the same day cause I opened the page twice. Can u check if it is "20060624132922_Chinesisch"? It should be marked as finished, if not it is the wrong one.
Maybe your tool isn't always the best solution for solving cycles. As i mentioned it on a different subpage: Only one link might cause the cycle so there is no need for the whole story. Still needed for 2 nearly same topics with several cycles though. So keep up the good work :) --chrislb 问题 07:56, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

Verschwörung

Könntest du bitte deine wiederholten und m.E. wenig sinnvollen Änderungen im Artikel Verschwörung erklären? Gruß, Phi.

How can anyone try and improve an article he or she is not able to even read? The article de:Verschwörung ist about conspiracy as a legal term and a political or rather sociological term as well. Therefore, the ambiguation page is the right page for the interwiki link. The one you keep putting in is misleading, because the German word Verschwörung has no or nearly no implications with civil law. So please leave the interwiki link just as ist is. Thank you. Phi.
Talked to that user. My sympathy Yurik, for your widely ignored work :). --chrislb 问题 12:25, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Can you please be more careful with this?

This is the second time I've had to remove a link to the Dutch article "Chris Wilson" from the English "Chris Wilson", which is not the same person.

Does your bot even make allowance for the fact that two biographical articles on two different Wikipedias may not be about the same person? Rebecca 04:50, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Fixed that by hand. @Rebecca, you could do it too. --chrislb 问题 12:27, 30 June 2006 (UTC)

Category-Interwiki

I wouldn't say this was wrong, but maybe you could improve your bot. The problem with this edit is, that it ignored the link to the Swedish page (in the English Category:Speeches) with an error in it. But it was a simple error, which your bot could repair on its own. There was just the namespace-word "Kategori:" missing in the Swedish link. Maybe your bot would have added the link to German Kategorie, if there had been an article under the wrong link. Maybe this is another possible source of error. Greetings, Amtiss, SNAFU ? 17:03, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

Bot only adds links to existing articles. In this case, bot might try a guess of a different namespace, and i might add this in the future, once i rewrite the whole bot to integrate with the interwiki conflict resolver (FAQ). Until then, the resolver is useless, which is much more important. Thanks! --Yurik 20:04, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

It might take a bit of time - black list is still in the works. Can you make it writable by admins only in the meantime? I am a bit surprised that the main page is modifiable by users though. --Yurik 16:08, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Persian Translation for the message: ً"Robot Adding:"

Hi Yurik:

Could you use "ربات افزودن:" on fa.wikipedia.org, instead of "robot Adding:"

YurikBot changing an image

Dear Yurik, let me first thank you for the VERY helpful work of your bot! Today was the first time, though, I saw something less helpful: [9] Could you please investigate? Thanks! --la:Usor:UV 23:30, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

This has to do with a lag between when the bot got the page and when it updated it. This change was made in between those times, and that's the reason for the problem. I am currently working on a new version that will (hopefully) get rid of such issues. Thanks for reporting! --Yurik 22:00, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
I understand, thanks! --UV 22:30, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

de:Keweenaw

Hello -- your bot has added (several times) a link to this article in the Keweenaw Peninsula article. The german page is about a rocket launch site, the english page is about Lena peninsula. The proper English Wikipedia link is Keweenaw (Rocket launch site). Could you please avoid this in the future? Thanks -- dcclark (talk) 17:00, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

My apologies, I found that the interwiki link on de: was wrong. I corrected that and all is well. -- dcclark (talk) 16:59, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Leçóis Maranhenses

Hello, you have added (again) de:Lençóis Maranhenses, en:Lençóis Maranhenses National Park and pt:Lençóis Maranhenses to the Dutch language article of this name. The de, en, and pt articles describe the dunes/national park of that name, while the nl article describes the microregion. These are not the same. Please do not link these articles again. Thank you. Problem with redirection pages in Hebrew

Hi Yurik,

Lately, the command "#REDIRECT" was translated into "#הפניה" in he:. Your bot which doesn't realize it's a redirect, acts as if it is a regular article and adds interwiki links to that page. Please check out [10] to see the problem yourself. Note that "#REDIRECT" can still be used, so I would like you to add "#הפניה" into the list of redirection commands, but not instead of #REDIRECT.

Also, I saw in your discussion page requests to translate your phrases into local languages. If you wish:

  • robot = רובוט
  • Adding = מוסיף
  • Removing = מוריד
  • Modifying = משנה

Thanks, Yellow up 16:06, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Done. Please let me know if you still see any issues. --Yurik 23:20, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Flemish

The Flemish article has an interwiki link to nl:Vlaams. YurikBot keeps reverting this interwiki link to nl:Hollands. This is wrong, and annoying. Please repair the bot.

I don't know why he is doing it. If you want to change interwiki links from "Flemish" to "Dutch" (since the Flemish language is a group of dialects of the Dutch language), the correct Dutch link should be "Nederlands" : nl:Nederlands.

Thank you. --LucVerhelst 17:58, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Flemish is a disambiguation article, whereas nl:Vlaams is not. Somehow nl:Hollands was linked in, and that's the only page in nl: that is not disambig, so bot picks that. See FAQ for more info. Disambigs should be linked with disambigs, regular articles with regular. --Yurik 18:57, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot not respecting noinclude tags

The Yurikbot seems to not be properly respecting noinclude sections on templates. This had an unfortunate effect here in the Tamil wikipedia, where the bot's action caused a large number of interwiki links to be incorrectly inserted into articles. --Saforrest 05:15, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, this is a known problem - we are working on the fix. What's strange is why the bot was operating in the template: namespace. --Yurik 13:32, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Bot linked M*A*S*H article on Simple to mung bean on other languages

That's because the Hebrew link on Simple was to mung bean.--Prosfilaes 20:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)
And that's why interwiki linking needs to be run with close supervision. -- Netoholic @ 02:55, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
That's not a very helpful or logical explanation given that it was YurikBot that added that Hebrew iw link when all the other iw links were clearly to "M*A*S*H". 71.197.237.5 03:49, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
M*A*S*H redirects to Mash, which had an IW link to the Hebrew page that was being added. It's a simple program, just follow the links.--Prosfilaes 05:11, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

How much work is there for YurikBot? :)

A related question - perhaps you know the answer?--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 21:21, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Should be pretty easy to query - can use tool server for that. --Yurik 21:34, 14 July 2006 (UTC)

Simple English Wikipedia does not need this page populated. Firstly, we only have ONE disambig template. Secondly, the capitalization is wrong.

Please let me know if you have any similiar ideas BEFORE running them on Simple. Your bot is not approved for this purpose. -- Netoholic 02:55, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

I ran it not as bot on porpose - so that it would be visible to everyone - it was manual upload with the help of a program, not a bot. Having this page helps various bots to get the up-to-date disambig template list from all the sites, that all the local admins have the way to change without asking developers to update the list. This happens way too often to be ignored - lots of disambigs were broken because the disambig lists were not up-to-date. --Yurik 03:21, 18 July 2006 (UTC)
I think you've got a flaw in the basic concept, and I encourage you to get other feedback by posting your "master plan" for review. -- Netoholic @ 06:14, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Bad interwiki links at de:Weihnachtslotterie

This bot keeps inserting incorrect interwiki links on the German "Weihnachtslotterie" article about the Spanish Christmas Lottery. The Christmas lottery (which has a first prize called "El Gordo") is NOT the same as the weekly Spanish lottery game called "El Gordo de la Primitiva". Although both use the name "El Gordo" for the first prize, they are totally different lottery games.

The bot also links the Weihnachtslotterie article to an Italian and a Portuguese article which are about a village called "El Gordo".

I will keep reverting these wrong links... until maybe one day I get tired of doing so and just leave them in... Couldn't someone correct this erratic behaviour of the bot? --84.77.61.66 18:40, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I am guessing the posting user was de:user:Capullo. I am sorry the bot is making this changes, but there is not much I can do - bot is really dumb - it trusts people who have made bad links. To do it differently would be to have a user checking all such links - an impossible task. Please see the FAQ above for in-depth explanation of how it works. To fix the issue, make sure there are no links anywhere in the previously linked pages that point to the German or Spanish articles. Otherwise, the next time my or any other interwiki bot runs through, they will return. --Yurik 19:17, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Hebrew again

Hey Yurik,

The bot hasn't done anything at he: since July 9th. Does it have anything to do with the changes you made on July 10th (translation to Hebrew, fixing #REDIRECT/#הפניה)? Yellow up 18:49, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I fixed the family file a while back [11], by adding the hebrew redirect you gave me. Presumably all the bots should have picked it up. --Yurik 19:09, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I didn't mean the problems I talked about before aren't fixed; the problem is that the bot is completely inactive, it hasn't done any edit since July 9th and I want to make sure it's not a bug. Yellow up 20:08, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Ohh, that -- the bot has been going to all sorts of other wiki sites, bringing them all up to date (some of them i haven't run in months). I recently decided that I would limit changes to the home site plus the largest available (usually en:) - this way two-way links are established, but minimum updates are done. I will get to HE: soon. --Yurik 20:27, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Okay, thanks! Yellow up 23:39, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Articles in a specific category

Hi, I have been (or will be) creating a large number of articles on Swiss municipalities. These articles have the correct interwiki links to other languages, however it will be very tedious to edit the foreign articles to interwiki back to en. Is it possible that YurikBot can come to our aid? All the articles will be in en:Category:Switzerland geography stubs. Thanks BillC 21:32, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

They will automatically be done next time the bot runs through en: (soon), or if i run it manually on that category. Has the loading of large list of articles been approved (not sure on the policy, but we wouldn't want to create too many stub articles :)) --Yurik 21:45, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your reply. I have not sought permission to create the articles, and am not sure where to seek it. It should be noted that Wikipedia:WikiProject Swiss municipalities has had a stated aim of creating at least a stub article on every Swiss municipality since the project's inception in June 2004. There are approximately 2800 municipalities in Switzerland, and around 1/3 of this number already exist in either stub or full article form. Pt and fr wikis have stub articles on all municipalities, and de has a fuller article, many of which are being translated into English, removing the stub tag. It is useful to know that the articles can or will be picked up by YurikBot. For the time being, I would suggest not running YurikBot on the category (unless you wish to), as I need to consult further with other editors who are active in this area. Regards, BillC 22:13, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I will run the bot on everything soon. I really don't know the policy on mass uploads like this - so I wouldn't be able to advise one way or another. --Yurik 22:22, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Greater Moscow wrong international links

Hello! You have recently twice tried to add Croatian link of the list of Moscow satellite cities (Moscow nearest suburbs) to the Greater Moscow article. Please note - Greater Moscow is not exist. It is just a name of old general plan of Moscow approved in 1925. This is not an article about nearest suburbs, thus Croatian article does not relate to GM article. CAN YOU PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS? --Sarabseth 02:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
By clearly stating the problem and also trying to figure things out using common sense. No need to yell. The bot is doing everything correctly: it replaces a link hi:अमीर खुसरो with hi:आमिर खुसरो because the first one does not exist -- its a redirect! You never want to link a page to a redirect as that redirect may change at any point, which would cause conflicts later on. If the first title is the proper one, you should move the hi: article to the new name, which would cause a bot (ANY interwiki bot, not just mine) to update all referencing pages. --Yurik 05:06, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Update: I added some info to FAQ, let me know if its not clear enough. --Yurik 06:30, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
I did state the problem as clearly as I understood it. There is no need to get snarky about "common sense"; everyone does not understand Wikipedia technicalities. And I "yelled" only when you didn't respond for one week to my perfectly polite July 15 comment.
If you think there is somthing impolite about upper case, I'll just have to politely disagree.
Anyway, thanks for clarifying the matter now. --Sarabseth 12:45, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Sarabseth, sorry for overreacting. I should put up my wiki stress meter (might have been in red yesterday). Imagine making well over 10,000 page changes per day, but only receiving very negative feedback for 1 change which for some reason did not play well. Considering that the bot touches practically every page out there, and every single mistake gets noticed, there is a very large number of people who potentially may get upset. :) --Yurik 14:47, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Bot trouble

Hello. Your bot has added interwiki links to the gynephilia and androphilia article — and re-added them after they were removed. In fact, yours is the third bot to add interwiki links here, but the only one to re-add them. The problem is that that there is one article in the English wikipedia where there are two in other language wikipedias, so a single link on the sidebar is inadequate. The interwiki links are already in the body of the article, where the individual links can be identified.

The same problem occurred on Anemoi, where a single English-language article covers several articles in some other languages. An editor reverted your bot's incorrect additions, but the bot returned (twice) and re-added links. Again, yours was not the only bot doing this.

Can the bot be improved to avoid this in future? Is there a way other interlanguage bots can be made aware of this issue, without me having the same conversation with each one? You thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. ntennis 04:12, 11 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I am very sorry for the bot reverting the changes, but there is not much I can do just yet - my bots simply runs more often, thus it repeats the replacement of the links, thinking they are missing. As I described in FAQ above, the idea of interwiki is to link everything one-to-one, and any deviation from that model causes problems. Once I finish (whenever i get more time) with the conflict resolution tool, it should be made substantially easier to fix such issues. --Yurik 13:54, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Is there no way to make a blacklist of pages to stay away from? So far YurikBot has added incorrect links to the Anemoi article 5 times. Could you point me to the place in your FAQ where you discuss one-to-one interlanguage links? I couldn't see it. Neither could I see anything on Wikipedia:Interlanguage links about one-to-one correspondence. Could you also direct me to this discussion? I would appreciate it. Thanks. ntennis 01:04, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
We discussed making of a blacklist a while back - it would be totally impossible to maintain. The one-to-one issue is more complex - basically if two french pages point to one english article, where should the english aricle point to? What about italian article that corresponds to the english article - should it point to french? These was the basis of the decision to always have one-to-one relationship. I don't remember where it was discussed, but there was some discussion many months back. The consensus was to make articles as single-topic as possible to allow easy linking. The page about Anemoi is complicated - in English it cover all gods on one page, everywhere else people have chosen to write individual articles. Maybe en should be split up as well... --Yurik 07:42, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
It's not very helpful to suggest that pages should be split or merged to make life easier for the bot. There is a consensus to keep Anemoi as a single article, not just on the English wikipedia but cs, es, fr and la as well. So the problem would not even be solved by splitting up the article, unless it was also done on each of these 5 pages — and I'm afraid I don't have competence in those languages, even if I had the time and inclination. What about you? Even better, perhaps you could merge all the articles on different gods in the German, Italian, Hungarian etc. wikipedias into a single article on each. One-to-one correspondence is certainly desirable, but inevitably will not happen in all instances, as editors in different languages will see things differently. Even the languages themselves do not always have a word-for-word correspondence.
To answer your question above, if two French pages point to one English page, then the English page can only have interwiki links in the body of the article — not on the interlanguage sidebar. This is exactly how it is done on both the pages I've referred to above. I am very interested in resolving this issue, but I'm not sure where to take it from here. You have suggested I read a non-existant section of your FAQ, and a discussion that happened many months back, but you don't remember where. Do you want me to continue to undo your bots errors indefinitely? Or is there another solution? Thanks. ntennis 08:36, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Ntennis, I was thinking of how to address your concern, and one idea that came to mind is to have a hidden template {{manualiwlinks|fr|gr}}, or something similar, that will tell the bot never to link this page to fr: or gr:. This will require considerable rewrite to the bot code, but might be needed. I have not been able to come up with the complete algorithm of bots behavior in such case, so if you have any suggestions, please share.
A less attractive alternative is to have {{noiw}}, which would instruct the bot to skip this page. The problem with the second approach is that having this template on gr: page would cause the bot not to work on ANY other pages that link to gr: page, which might not be desirable for the other sites. Imagine you have an article translated into 60 languages. And now someone puts such a template in one of them - do you think 59 other languages will be happy about it? Do you think they will have the capacity to maintain 60 other pages and keep track of any new or renamed interwikies?
Lastly, sorry for sending you needlessly to the faq - i get too many alarms from people who have not read the faq before posting, even though their question is spelled out there, and yours got confused with the others. Please understand. I do remember discussing one-to-one linking extensivelly, but that was a fairly long time ago, and i will have to dig for it. --Yurik 14:34, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your considered response. I appreciate that solutions which involve changing the bot code will involve some work on your part and may not happen straight away. Your suggestion of a hidden template sounds good. I guess the second solution would be easier to implement? Could we begin with this at least, and work toward a more elegant solution when time permits? I might be missing something, but I don't think the downside would be as bad as you suggest. Remember this only happens on a very small number of pages. It also only happens once the bot has already visited the page, so the other interlanguage links are already in place. What do you think? ntennis 23:30, 23 July 2006 (UTC)
Any more thoughts or developments? I've reverted yurikbot on the anemoi page 3 more times in a week since my last post (see history). It's getting to be as annoying as a human troll. I could put up with it if I had a sense that this will not continue indefinitely. ntennis 00:33, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
I have not forgotten -- the bot is running a complete batch of all sites (something that has repeatedly been requested). Some articles with incorrect links will be propogated to other sites, and, more annoyingly, some with cases like this will be placed as well. The bot is now on letter C of english, and it is done with all the other sites (about 90 more) - it has done a huge job. Please wait until it finishes that batch. In the mean while, i am trying different approaches to resolve this. Thanks for your understanding. --Yurik 03:04, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
OK, thanks. :) ntennis 03:16, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Any updates? It's been a month and YurikBot is still adding incorrect links to the anemoi article. ntennis 04:41, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
Why not get the bot to put the pt:Bóreas link on the Boreas redirect page rather than the anemoi article? ntennis 04:48, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Yurik, if you need this page for your bot, can you please move it to your user subpages? I'm cleaning up the wikipedia namespace and this page seems to have no purpose. --Elian Talk 13:28, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Elian, my goal is to allow site admins to instruct any bot (not just interwiki) that the page is a disambig. Any user of the pywikipediabot framwork will soon start to use that page, so moving it to my user space is not desirable - i am just one of the devs. Up till now disambig templates lists were maintained by pywikipediabot community, but latelly i received some complaints that the lists were out of date, so I thought (and still think) that having this kind of page on each site will help admins to maintain it directly. --Yurik 14:39, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

Yurikbot has added it:CN and sv:CN to Canadian National Railway a few times now. Those links belong on Cn and not the destination where CN (a redirect to Canadian National Railway) points. I've updated the other language wikis as far as I can to try to correct the problem. Slambo (Speak) 17:14, 23 July 2006 (UTC)

There are still seem to be a few pages with incorrect links (I used the resolution tool above to check that). Once the tool can modify articles, it can be used to resolve CN mess. Until then, only manual resolution will help. --Yurik 21:08, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
The bot re-added the links again, so I've commented them out instead of removing them this time. Slambo (Speak) 16:25, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Sant'Elena and Rialto

Hi - YurikBot has repeatedly added interwiki links to Sant'Elena and Rialto, but these other articles are on a different place - one not currently covered by the English edition of Wikipedia. Warofdreams talk 15:06, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Someone made a mistake of linking it (please read the FAQ above). I suggest creating a new article about the place in the English wiki called Sant'Elena (.....), and put a link to it on any one of the other wikies. Also, move the original Sant'Elena to another name (also in the format Sant'Elena (.....)). And lastly, change the redirect page Sant'Elena into a disambiguation page with links to two newly created articles. This way bot next time will ignore the disambig and follow the link you placed on another wiki to the correct article, and will update everything else correctly. --Yurik 21:20, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

Adding AfD pages

You just linked up no:Linguistiske spørsmål knyttet til euro, the article in question is clearly marked with apropriate tags indicating it is AfD. Further on, the article has a spelling error in its title, so if it's not deleted, it will be moved, or as the consensus seems to be, be merged with the article no:Euro. Please do not interlink debated articles, this is only going to cause extra labor when we have to update the links. Bfg 21:01, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

To do this we need to make a list of all the templates that bot should avoid working on, for each language. Moving article does not affect the bot - it will simply follow the redirect to the proper title. Merging it might cause some problems if the other article interlinks with different articles in the same language, otherwise it will simply gather all the links from the combined article and proceed as usual. --Yurik 21:07, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
That would not be a big problem, would it? Make the page User:Yurikbot/Avoid (or equivalent) which would be a list of such templates, or a redirect if such a page exists as part of the wikipedia project in a specific language.
For the article in question, the article it will be merged with interlinks with a different article on the English wikipedia. no:Linguistiske spørsmål knyttet til euro interlinks with en:Linguistic issues concerning the euro, the Norwegian article mentioned is proposed merged into no:Euro which interlinks with en:Euro.

Hoek

Please do not allow your bot to add wrong links in Hoek, thanks. --Ioannes Pragensis 11:18, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Please see the FAQ above. --Yurik 20:55, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
The FAQ is of no use here. It just says to remove the bad links on all the wikipedias; but there are no bad links except for those that your bot keeps adding to Hoek. Please put that article on a blacklist. Eugène van der Pijll 07:42, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
The links do exist: fr:Corner, nl:Hoek, and pl:Wierzchołek all point to Hoek. Bot does not invent things. Also, there is no black list. --Yurik 22:11, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Oops, yes. I have removed the en: interwiki from fr and pl, where it was indeed incorrect. It is correct at nl:Hoek. Let's see if that solves the problem. Eugène van der Pijll 00:50, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
It added the nonsensical links again. Could you please help us solve this, Yurik? --Ioannes Pragensis 07:57, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Some link must have been forgotten somewhere. The bot is finishing up the en:, after which i will take a break and finish up the new version of the bot, with more advanced logic. I am sure it will be buggy at first, but it will allow people to use a webbased tool to resolve such issues themselves without telling me. --Yurik 13:42, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Please see the FAQ above. --Yurik 20:55, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
(after Et Ct) Yes, I just saw it. The problem is only nl has an article about this language. Maybe I'll write an English language about the subject, probably this problem can be solved then by adding an interwiki to nl but explicitly not to zh. Belgian man 21:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
... or it can be solved simply by removing the nl interwiki on the Mandarin article (just done). Belgian man 21:01, 25 July 2006 (UTC)
As long as links on all pages are not pointing to any unrelated pages, everything is fine :) --Yurik 21:04, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

Qadi or Bahth ?

Dear Yuribok, nothwithstanding the insistence of some national Wikipedias, the entry "Bahth" is not assimilable to my entry "Qadi" in Italian Wikipedia. "Qadi" in fact is related to an historical judge, in the time of the Caliphs or the Sultans. "Bahth" is instead related to a modern judge, comparable to a contemporary examining magistrate. So, please, don't reintroduce this reference, if it's possibile, in Italian Wikipedia. Thank you very much. --Cloj 09:17, 26 July 2006 (UTC) (Cloj also in Italian Wikipedia)

Cloj, I think your question is answered in the FAQ at the top of this page. Please let me know if you have any questions. --Yurik 19:04, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Image redlinks

As promised, a talk page message:

Oh great developer, one who commits to SVN, hear our prayer!

Under the current setup, redlinked images go to the upload page, rather than the image description page. This was wonderful when images couldn't be undeleted, because upload was most likely what you wanted. Now, however, it's a pain, because we're more likley to be undeleting, and we have to put the URL in by hand to undelete. If this could be fixed, I and others would appreciate it. Essjay (Talk) 17:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Wow, this is a tough one :)... The mighty chief developer called Brion put the undelete in place, and I, the insignificant worm of the developers world, should not meddle in such affairs :) Seriously, i think there should be a link on the upload page to list the deleted images with the same name. (If I understood you correctly). --Yurik 18:52, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Or, for us non-admins, a link to the deletion log so we can find out if the file has been deleted or it was just a typo. Agathoclea 21:45, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I agree, but i doubt i will be the one implementing this - i have almost no knowledge of the UI aspects of the wiki. Can you file a bug in the bugzilla, describing this? I will vote for it and might bug a dev or two to get it done. --Yurik 21:57, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Query API bug

Hello!

When I output the query 1 in serialized format (2), then there is a uncorrect escaped \r\n which causes unserialize() to return a empty variable. Greets, 84.56.42.177 17:41, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

What happens if you do a search/replace on that string, removing just the '\r' characters? Apparently there is a number of posts about new lines with php serialize and transmitting it over the web. If you find good info, please post. --Yurik 18:49, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
I have an idea: just remove linkebreaks completely when sending them...or convert them to \r\n so that no OS makes mess out of them. Greets,HardDisk 19:02, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
Did it happen before, or it just started happening now? I would rather not mess up the format - supposedly the transmission is sent as a binary, which is what i want. Let me study it further. --Yurik 20:00, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Category:Archaeological sites in Israel

I removed the nl interlanguage link the bot added from this category, but it added it again. What the bot is putting is Categorie:Nationaal park van Israël. (National parks of Israel). If you remove the faulty Dutch category from Category:Archaeological sites in Israel, I'll repair the Dutch Categorie:Nationaal park van Israël if you wish. Thanks. - GilliamJF 01:16, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

I'm confused - why can't you modify all affected pages? --Yurik 01:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
All right, no problem. I was not sure of how the robot would want it done. GilliamJF 02:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
The robot would "fill-in the blanks" - if it sees any links missing, it will add them. To completelly remove things, you must remove them manually (at this time) from all pages. --Yurik 02:36, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot and interwiki links

Hey Yurik! I don't know if it's been discussed before, and I really don't wish to worsen your Wikistress level any more, but I would like to ask you to make YurikBot—on Hungarian Wikipedia at least—use a new line as a separator between interwiki links instead of simple spaces. That'd make it a lot easier to read and edit. Thanks! chery 09:02, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

This is a global setting for all pywikipedia bots - either it has recently been changed (per someone's request), or it always was like that and you just noticed it. I will look at it further later. --Yurik 18:30, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Alphabetical order

Can you have the bot put the interwiki links in alphabetical order? WP:AWB alphabetizes them, and then your bot un-does that. It would also help in seeing whats your bot actually added and removed. See here [13] its hard to see exactly what got added and removed, example is how fi got moved from in the F's to down in the S-T area. What do you think? -Ravedave 15:03, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

No, there was tons of discussions about it, and the "phonetical" list was determined. FI: is Suomi, which should be sorted after sk:. I am planning on making mediawiki configurable per site / per user preferences, after which all links can be resorted alphabetically by code, but haven't gotten around to it yet. --Yurik 18:29, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Ok I have added a discussion over at WP:AWB I don't really care which way it works out (well I'd prefer alphabetical) but mainly the two programs need to agree. -Ravedave 19:00, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
AWB uses the order specified at m:Interwiki sorting order#By order of alphabet, based on local language. Martin 19:07, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot and handling of #tags in links

The bot edited Clara the rhinoceros and changed the french link from http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhinoc%C3%A9ros_c%C3%A9l%C3%A8bres_en_Europe#Clara_le_rhinoc.C3.A9ros_.281741-1758.29 to

The first link works, but the second doesn't. Curiously, the bot's edit description mentions the first link, but the actual link is the second. I realize that the first is somewhat of a kludgy link, but it works, and you may want to adjust how the bot handles characters after the # symbol in the URL. Thanks for your help. --Rajah 15:00, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

Hello Yurik. My name is Thijs! and I have been running my Thijs!bot for a while now (as you may have noticed). I got the question from somebody at the Greek wikipedia if I could use the same order of the intewriki-links it adds as you do. As a developer of the pywikipedia platform and interwiki.py, could you help me out with this? What order do you use and how can I implement it? Or: when will your chagnes be integrated in the current CVS-version of pywikipedia? Thijs! 14:35, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Hmm, i did not change the order -- it should be the same for everyone -- as defined in the family files. I am running on the latest cvs version, so not sure why yours is different. --Yurik 15:20, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Incorrect/Incomplete interwiki sorting order

Hi! If I got it right, you are one of the devs of the pywikipedia-bot. A few day ago, I was made aware that the pywikipedia self.alphabetic_revised is outdated, and incorrect at certain points. I made a bug report about it, and sent a mail to the mailing list too, but up till now there has been no change in the situation. Could you maybe take a look at it, if you have time? Thanks, --Tuvic 15:02, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the notice. Is there a complete list of the new/revised list? --Yurik 17:40, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
TarmoK has a list, which I compared with the current pywikipedia-list. I then made some conclusions on my talk page at NL-wiki, but I don't think there's a complete list already. If you want, I can try to assemble it from the current list and my conclusions, but then there are still a couple I am in doubt about. --Tuvic 17:48, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Yes, a complete list would help greatly - you have already analyzed the problem, whereas I would have to start from scratch trying to figure out what should go where. Make a list, and put any questions afterwards - so everyone would easily see the issues. Thanks! --Yurik 17:54, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok, I'll do that. (Mm, why did I not do it before, is what I'm asking myself now ... ) --Tuvic 17:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)
I've made a list at nl:Gebruiker:Tuvic/Interwiki-links. I have a couple of remarks noted there. Also, this is only about self.alphabetic_revised. I read about a self.alphabetic at m:Interwiki sorting order, but I don't seem to be able to find that in the code. --Tuvic 18:58, 4 August 2006 (UTC)

Olympics

Hi thankyou for your work on athletics at the olympics but I am currently going through the olympics and beginning articles on all the medalist notably in athletics. However I noticed that Athletics at the 1932, 1936, and 1948 Summer Olympics are missing when they are very important in sport and I fell certain all the medalists are all featured on other language wikipedias. Is it possible you could bot these new articles in the same way that others like Athletics at the 1928 Summer Olympics have been set up? thanks James Janderson 10:35, 22 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi Yurik! Can you help me? I want to disable sleep (timeout) in interwiki.py, but i don't know a lot about Python...? --Emx 10:52, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

The sleep is there for a reason :) - we don't want the servers no come to a crawl when a bot hits it :) In reality, the interwiki bot is being rewritten to use the query api -- much more efficient and less stressful, but it will take me some time to finish. I don't have the code with me at this moment, i think there are some global settings you can put in you user-config.py that will set the delay for the sites, but i need to look it up. --Yurik 20:51, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Your bot re-ordered my language list

Dear Yurik,

I see that your bot made this change, where the list of other languages in which the Eurovision Song Contest article can be found was re-ordered.

As far as I have been able to tell, the language list should be in alphabetical order of ISO code, so for example eo (Esperanto) comes before es (Spanish). This order also makes the most sense. Your bot changed this.

Could you please tell me why your bot is programmed to switch this order, and what logic it follows? I intend to revert this edit, but before doing so I want to let you know, so the bot won't just go ahead and do it again. Please let me know. Thanks. EuroSong talk 22:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi, please see the meta:Interwiki sorting order. Thanks. --Yurik 23:26, 24 August 2006 (UTC)
Hmm okay.. thanks for showing me. But what if I prefer to use the "default order as used by most Wikipedias", as stated on that meta page – which is the way I did it before? Any way your bot can stop modifying the Eurovision page? I did ask about this before here and here, and both times I got answers telling me to sort by ISO code. Interwiki-bot not working on csb

Hello Yurik. I have a question for you as a developer of the pywikipedia-platform. The interwiki.py does not work properly on the csb: wikipedia. Featured Article template

Hi, Yurik. I want to know if your bot support adding {{Link FA}}? If it doesn't, I think it will be a good thing to add this function to your bot because I have found that MANY featured articles often do not have a star which they deserve next to their language codes in a lot of wikipedias of other languages. And since it's such a tedious work to add {{Link FA}} to every wikipedia in the case of a very popular article like Europe, I really suggest you add this function to your bot. Hello Yurik, Could you implement the following words in the next version of the interwiki.py?

'eu': (u'robota ', u'Erantsia', u'Ezabatua', u'Aldatua')

Thanks! Thijs! 09:32, 29 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. This is la Maga, from the Spanish wiki. Several bots have repeatedly added a bunch of incorrect interwikis to es:Plátano, which, being a disambiguation page, should not bear any. I believe the page you should link is es:Musa x paradisiaca. Thijs! told me you're the one who should be informed; I've read the FAQ, but said article has a crystal-clear disambiguation template at the bottom, which is listed at Mediawiki:Disambiguationspage (well, in fact it's a redirect to the one listed at Mediawiki:Disambiguationspage, but I don't think it should be an issue). Thanks for taking a look at the matter. la Maga dixit 11:55, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

It is an issue :), the process of resolving redirects in such case is fairly complicated, so we try to list ALL templates and redirects to them at Mediawiki:Disambiguationspage. Namespaces

I saw this edit at Wikipedia:Namespace. I'm interested in information about namespaces. Can you point me to some links/discussion? - jc37 16:17, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, don't know of any discussion. I am sure people have discussed the addition of the new namespaces, but who/where/how is beyond me :). --Yurik 18:02, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
What caused you to add them to the page? Do they actually exist? - jc37 19:17, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Yes, in some wikies (see [16] after line 189). --Yurik 21:52, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
Oh ok, so they are not namespaces on the en: wikipedia? - jc37 21:57, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
EN: only has these defined: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?what=namespaces , but if more are ever added, we should keep them in sync as far as the namespace codes. So if af: wants to introduce a new namespace "blah", it should not get the same id as the one used for citations in fr:. --Yurik 22:35, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

Using Query API for watchlist checker

I've been using a little program to make checking my watchlist easier (if you're interested, it's at User:Gerbrant/WikiCheck - the exe is a bit out-of-date though). It works, as far as it goes, but I've got a few issues with it:

  • The MediaWiki software has to do a lot of work generating proper HTML. This effort goes to waste since the program parses the HTML to generate custom output.
  • The standard watchlist shows only the most recent edit to the pages - this means you've got to be careful not to miss stuff. You can turn on "show all edits", but it seems to be buggy (having an arbitrary, seemingly random, cut-off beyond which no edits will show; sometimes this isn't even consistent when refreshing the page) and it's harder to parse.
  • I've experimented a little, and it seems Query API is faster - perhaps because the server has do to less work?

My little program will probably have to do more work when using the Query API, but it possibly lessens server load; that and the points above could make it worth it.

Are there any special issues to watch out for? How many revisions with comments (but without text) could I query per request and per unit time without hammering the server too much? (I.e. if necessary I'll split up the request in order to not retreive all pages at once.)

Is it possible to detect if revisions that should be there considering the "from" date, are culled by the rvlimit? Is it possible to fetch the watchlist? Is there a way to ask the server how "busy" it is, or how many items can be reasonably asked for?

It'll probably take a while for WikiCheck to go through such a drastic overhaul... but from what I've seen it may well be worth the trouble. I'm awaiting your opinions on this matter.

Faithfully yours, Shinobu 00:11, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

Hello Shinobu, sorry for the delay (kinda busy with the new wiki API). The new API will have a watchlist access, so you will be able to use that (once its ready). You bring a valid point about the watchlist only having the last entry - i will try to solve it (please see the API watchlist parameters). Query API is generally much faster due to its very little overhead compared to HTML generation, and typically lessens the server load. The goal of both Query API and, especially, the new API is to lessen your work as well - by providing clean parsable data instead of piles of HTML markup. There are many different formats that query can output, and depending on the programming language, you may choose to use the format better suited for you. There are generally limits on how many items you can get, but if you exceed that, you will get information on what the limit is. Bots have much higher limits then users/anonymous. Hope this help. --Yurik 18:00, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

A lot. Thanks for the link to the new API. Currently the program is written in VB because that's easier to use than C/C++ when you want to manage a window, and to embed a Webbrowser control in it. It uses a set of API calls to make it dock to the left screen edge that are probably quite OS dependent. (I.e. to do the same thing in Linux you'd need to do something else entirely...)

The upside is that since I already have a Webbrowser control embedded anyway, I also have Javascript, so I could use Query API from there using XMLHTTP, and ask for JSON results. If all the HTML-generation code is moved to Javascript, that would mean that only the code that creates the docked window would have to be reimplemented for other platforms, so that would be nice for portability.

Faithfully yours, Shinobu 00:41, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Problems with query.php?what=userinfo

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?what=userinfo&uiisblocked&uihasmsg&uiextended seems to be returning incorrect userinfo data - possibly that of the last user to visit the page? The user seems to change with every refresh, and it rarely returns the correct username. Could this maybe have resulted from this change you made this morning? query.php, category contents

Actually before using cl_sortkey you do in GenPagesInCategory():

'cl_sortkey >= ' . $this->db->addQuotes(titleToKey($cpfrom));

titleToKey() change space to underscore, but afaics at cl_sortkey point of view space and underscore are different char, eg : http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cat%C3%A9gorie:Jour_de_l%27ann%C3%A9e&from=10%20mai and http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cat%C3%A9gorie:Jour_de_l%27ann%C3%A9e&from=10_mai gives different result. I see a post where you say than next parameter must be used as an opaque string and passed as it, but how to encode a space in an url w/o being hurted by this change from space to underscore in your code ? A exemple of a broken request : http://fr.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?what=category&cptitle=Category:Jour%20de%20l%27ann%C3%A9e&cpfrom=10+avril&cplimit=1&noprofile, returned page name should be 10 mai but is 11 août (check the right result with the first url above) since the cl_sortkey you use is 10_mai not 10 mai. Am I missing something ? Perhaps in this change http://svn.wikimedia.org/viewvc/mediawiki/trunk/extensions/BotQuery/query.php?r1=15865&r2=15885 you need the first chunks but not the two applied to GenPagesInCategory() ? phe 15:50, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Hi phe, thanks for the report. I was getting some feedback of the broken category enumeration, but haven't had a chance to look at it. I think you are right at that it should not be converted like that. --Yurik 20:11, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Api.php and imagelinks

Hi, will this allow me to get thumbnail images, non-thumbnail images and images inside gallery tags with caption texts? --HartzR 19:36, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

Initially the api will only get you data about articles, such as what images they use, what articles use a given image, the information about the image itself (size, full url, revisions, etc). No functionality "give me an image X in size x/y" has been planned yet, but might become available in the future. --Yurik 21:33, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

API, category members and talk pages

Hello, Yurik. There's a manual query we at the Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Index team have been doing for a while, but that we don't know if it can be implemented with the current Query API, if it will be implemented on the future API, or if it is something we have to beg you for :). Currently, we read off the contents of Category:Wikipedia 1.0 assessments, and for every subcategory of that page (e.g. Category:Tropical cyclone articles by quality), we categorize articles on several categories based on the assessment scale (for example, Category:FA-Class hurricane articles and Category:GA-Class hurricane articles). We then use those categories as data for automatically-updated tables, such as Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Tropical cyclone articles by quality/1.

As you can see, we also use the date when the talk page is tagged into one of those categories, and we then read manually the revision id of the last revision of the article page to find the date at which the article was assessed. At this time, it means opening each subcategory manually, reading the contents of each subcategory, checking with the stored results of each category for differences (whether talk pages were added, removed or moved), and for every difference, process the latest diff on each article page and store it in the tables. However, as you can imagine that takes forever: we are processing about 400,000 articles already, which translates into a bot run of about 6 hours on the good days, and twice that on the bad days.

So, is there a way for us to make this process more efficient using the API tools? I've been looking around at the API docs, but I can't find anything where we can read the members of each category and have the companion pages returned, a la {{ARTICLEPAGENAME}}. So, would the current API accommodate these metadata queries? The English Wikipedia uses metadata extensively in this way, so it would be very helpful to have something like this...

Feel free to ask any of us at WP:1.0/I any questions, as we are trying to figure out how to solve this before it becomes even worse. Titoxd(?!?) 22:56, 10 November 2006 (UTC)

Hmm... I never got around for thanking you for the pointers. :) Just one more thing: would you mind telling us whenever the categorymembers query on the MediaWiki API is implemented? Thanks. Titoxd(?!?) 23:35, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

ApiFeedWatchlist.php

Hi! I was looking at the Watchlist RSS, and I noticed that only entries older than one day show up. When looking into the svn, I saw this:

// limit to 1 day
        $startTime = wfTimestamp(TS_MW, time() - intval(1 * 86400));

However since a watchlist is from new to old, it should be $endTime. Also a longer date may be handy, for example 3 days. Regards, Bryan 19:28, 25 December 2006 (UTC)

YurikBot not running on Hebrew Wiki

Hey Yurik,

I noticed the Inter Wiki bot of yours did not ran on the Hebrew Wiki for almost 4 months! What happened? In this period we grew at least 4,000 articles, and most of them has links to the English Wiki only.

Please let me know if there is any problem, and if not, when are you planning to run it. Your bot is the # 1 on top edits list, and should remain there...

Have a nice day. Chagai 07:27, 29 December 2006 (UTC)
