Thylacine[edit]

Hi Yomangani, Really enjoyed the Thylacine article. I have some small points that you might like to consider when making your next update:

 • Description - the jaw was muscular... Was that jaws? & were the 46 teeth the total of upper & lower jaws?
 • Diet - Prey....small animals....wombats. Have you tried to pick up a wombat, they aren't what I'd call small, they probably weigh more than the Thylacine!
 • Extinction - ...introduced bounties...1930... I think you mean 1830.
 • I thought marsupial young were called joeys, but apparently only the hopping sort!!
www.museum.vic.gov.au/scidiscovery/dna/cloning.asp Museum of Victoria

I was being flippant before, no wonder my point wasn't clear! I just thought that all marsupial young (while in the pouch anyway) were known as joeys. I think the term pup came about simply because they are/were so similar to dogs. I guess you have to decide whether, as this is an encyclopedia, you should use the technically correct word or that which is commonly used (but it might be difficult to know what is common - Thylacines aren't discussed by the average person on a daily basis...) GrahamBould 14:39, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • Note E - I think it's either "southern Australian" (the general area), or "South Australian", (the state). "In southern Australia accounts.." should be "In southern Australian accounts.."
I've checked further & I think sac is precisely correct. The dictionary definition of sack doesn't even mention the animal meaning. GrahamBould 11:55, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers & thanks for a great article GrahamBould 19:45, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Evolution (& a later section) - "...widespread (although never numerous) on the Australian mainland and New Guinea." As it was also in Tassie, maybe it would be better to say "widespread (although never numerous) in Australia and New Guinea". Or did it get to Tassie much later, & your choice of words was deliberate? Interested to know... GrahamBould 19:33, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Re name of young. At present in the article they are both joeys & cubs. I was in the Vienna Natural History Museum yesterday & they call them pups! So the choice is expanding. I think we should pick on one & stay with it - cubs is more bear-like, & pups I think is because they look like dogs, so maybe we should stick with joeys. Whatever you think. Lend a hand?[edit]

Yomangani, can you lend a diplomatic hand on the FAR for V for Vendetta (film)? In the absence of Marskell, and with Joelr31 not yet weighing in (he indicated elsewhere he's very busy right now), I'm going it alone. Another editor closed out the review him/herself (incorrectly), so I re-added it, leaving talk messages to everyone involved to record on the FAR page whether concerns have been addressed. I've asked the original nominator twice to indicate if his concerns have been addressed (yesterday and today), and he seems to be skirting the issue, and has not firmly said all concerns are addressed. Not sure what to do next, but need another set of eyes, and some firm diplomacy. Sandy (Talk) 14:43, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Ibid[edit]

Thanks for the comments. Now that you mention this point, and it has crossed my mind before, I think I will abandon the Latin abbrev. system for future articles that I write. I mean, there is the danger you mention of a careless second user, but also when I'm editing a large article it causes me problems, because I have to change the notes when I move or remove or add text. This is tedious, besides risking mistakes. Regards, Calgacus (ΚΑΛΓΑΚΟΣ) 20:21, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request help with Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Stand_Alone_Complex 'no consensus' decision[edit]

You posted that the decision wasn't clear for action to be taken... but then Ned Scott apparently went ahead and merged the article anyway saying that because it needed work with the WP:OR problem, it needed to be merged. Discussion so far has not proceeded as one would hope. I am a pretty new user and was thinking of asking for mediation, but don't know how to question the uses of admin power properly. Qpawn deletion[edit]

I really must take issue with your decision to delete the article called Qpawn. I understand that there was a certain amount of astroturfing involved, so I won't fall back on the ratio of keeps to deletes, but even when new users were factored out, six people wanted the article deleted, and three of us wanted to keep the article, and were willing to argue spiritedly against deleting it. A 6-3 majority is not a consensus by any means, and I'd remind you that the job of an admin in an Afd is to articulate and to act on the consensus of the discussion, not to make an executive decision. I'd also remind you that the only circumstances that warrant an admin to ignore the opinion of a user are in a case of legal trouble, or bad faith, and that when in doubut, one shouldn't delete. I do hope you'll consider reversing your decision to delete the article and give it (and the disscussion about it) a chance to develop. Many thanks. -- Thesocialistesq/M.Lesocialiste 18:54, 6 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems on the Gävle goat article[edit]

There is a user named Danny (see the History) that reverted me on the Gävle goat article. I have no idea why, even though I tried to ask him. Maybe because I found a YouTube link to a video about the Gävle goat, but he also reverted all my edits (which was adding info and references..) I reverted back to the version before he reverted it. Then he reverted THAT version as well!! crazy isen't it.. Please take a look at the mess and se what you think?? Thanks FreddyFred 00:51, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers, I'm not sure what went wrong the references were fine and the link went to the references but in the numbered notes list the 35 had no comment attached but was blank - when I tried to add it all the notes for the article vanished. I'm much safer when I stick to simple references and post replies using two hands and not while talking on the phone as my replies don't make any sense. I only saw the article was being nom delisted today I'll have a look for citations that remain :( Alci12 12:04, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"The present banners represent those of the knights in 1864 to which were added those of the Prince of Wales (1868) and the Duke of Connaught (1869)".[1] Alci12 12:09, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That was the closest I could find - the dublin castle article teases that it answers the point but stops just short. The banners are very visible [2] certainly colourful but I can't find a good photo of the stall plates. So close you can just about make them out [3] Alci12 12:54, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Success! The stall plates can be seen here [4] (and they are colourful :) Shame the image is under a non-commercial, no-derivatives licence. Also Galloway says the banners were replaced in the 1960's with those of the Knights of the Order in 1922, which contradicts the quote from the cathedral webpage above. I'll try and double check this. Dr pda 13:10, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well done that's clear wrt to the last set of knights. We could do with a pic to clarify if the front of the stalls or elsewhere hold the plates of previous knights which is the case with other orders. Alci12 13:33, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even if we get a pic of that, it doesn't demonstrate that it was traditional to leave them in place (as if it has been redecorated they could have been replaced), so we'll have to reword that section slightly. Nice work though. Yomanganitalk 13:56, 11 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Yomangani, please do not remove ELAC maintenance tags from articles per WP:ELAC-R. This is a new project, supported by the community, we presently only have four articles tagged; see: list. You are welcome to contribute to our project. Presently, ELAC protocol is to use main page tags not talk page tags. We are giving this a test run this month to see how it works. Thanks: --Sadi Carnot 12:13, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

St Patrick[edit]

Thanks for your work in saving the article. I'm afraid that I can't recall the exact source of that particular claim. However, I do know that it is general practice for all the orders of chivalry -- see, for example, this website on the order of the Bath: "The stallplates of past knights can be seen attached to the stalls," and a site on the order of the Garter: "These 'achievements' are taken down on the knight's death and the insignia are returned to the Sovereign. The stallplates remain as a memorial and these now form one of the finest collections of heraldry in the world." -- Emsworth 17:38, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Combined FA template[edit]

Trying to find how all the pieces work, because I wasn't sure if mainpage date is handled by a bot? I found that first, it's added as "to come", and later the "to come" is deleted out. I don't understand who does this work, though. (I'll follow your talk page - sorry I can't be more help in this - don't know much about templates.) Sandy (Talk) 17:20, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure either - I'm just going to push ahead with it and find out later. Yomanganitalk 17:23, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless of who does the work, it seems set up to take the date in format December 8|2006 Sandy (Talk) 17:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but that is a bit silly if there are more than one set of dates. I get a feeling there something wriggly in this can. Yomanganitalk 17:38, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do you want me to work on tracking down who does that piece and how? Sandy (Talk) 17:40, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If you don't mind. I'll be back later. Yomanganitalk 17:47, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think this is a bot - I think some people see when User:Raul654 fills extra days on WP:TFA and adds the template to talk pages, and then other people edit out the "to come" on the day. WP:FA is updated each day automatically, as I understand it. -- ALoan (Talk) 19:16, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It should be possible to include this functionality in the template, e.g. if today's date is after the 'main page' date, show this article was featured ...., else show this article will appear on the main page on..... The code would go something like
{{#ifexpr: CURRENTTIMESTAMP >= {{#time: YmdHis|{maindate} {mainyear} }}
|
It appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured article on {maindate}, {mainyear}.}}
|
It will appear on Wikipedia's Main Page as Today's featured article on {maindate}, {mainyear}.}}
}}

You could you the same logic to choose which image to display as well. I haven't fully tested this, see m:Parser functions and m:Magic words for more info. Dr pda 19:45, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do all the tagging, and I've been doing it since it began back in September of 2005. It's pretty much the only thing I do other than regular article maintenance and vandal revertion. I just add the next available date to my watchlist and add the tags to the articles when that date is populated, then check for other dates to see if they have been populated and once i fill all the new ones up i watch the next empty one. I check my watchlist every day and so I never really miss the additions by more than a few hours, it's nothing special or difficult, and it's not done by a bot. The reason I add it as December 8, instead of 8 December is because the page that the tag links to is placed as December 8, so linking it backwards produces a red link, and making redirects for each of those pages is too troublesome since there are 365 of them. I haven't really had any trouble adding the templates to the articles so I'd like to continue doing it if you all don't mind. I also do a bit of maintenance of the empty archives behind it all, for example, I recently created the 2007 archive and did a lot of work on the 2006 archive as well, just helping out Raul654 and such. I'd like to keep doing it if that's fine with all of you, but if you wanna put a bot to do it, I don't mind, it'd just make me a bit more useless on here, lol. -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 23:33, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that makes me feel better about it, I was just dissapointed because I've been expecting it to happen eventually and it caught up with me today, lol. I really do enjoy doing it, however... it makes me feel important, ha ha! I think a bot already switches the tags over once they reach the mainpage, it used to be done by user:hydnjo, I don't know if they still do, but maybe not, I just know I don't do that part and never have either. Still, I'd be willing to collaborate on any of this you're trying to think up here... the thing is, what exactly is it you're trying to achieve, I've read this convo and the other one on Sandy's talkpage but I'm still kind of in the dark about it... any feedback? Thanks! -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 23:59, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, SmthManly! I left a note for hydnjo. Sandy (Talk) 00:24, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I just left this on your talkpage Sandy, but I'll reiterate here for the others, I did some research and it seems that a bot controlled by User:Schutz is the one that does the switchover to the templates once the article gets featured, he'd probably be the best to contact about that. -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 00:46, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - that's what we needed to know. I'll wait to contact him, as we see how Yomangani's work progresses. Sandy (Talk) 00:49, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's definately a work in progress I see, but itd probably be better if the image was as large as the entire template, and you'd have several different stages of it, like, if the template is just featured and nothing else, then it would look like the current one, but when it gets on the mainpage, it would get a bit larger and a note about it being added to the mainpage would be placed underneath the featured status, so on and so forth, but all done as one uniformed template, you can probably do this by creating several different templates with similar markups and just having users change the markup whenever a change comes along, then, a new template will show that looks very similar to the other one. -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 00:58, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Look great, but i still think it should only have one large image, and the main thing should be the fact it's featured or demoted, the rest of that stuff should be small notations below it, right now it kinda just looks like 3 or 4 templates all merged into one large one, instead of just one template. -- SmthManly / ManlyTalk / ManlyContribs 01:05, 14 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In case you need this later (to remember): SmthManly adds, Schutz BOT updates [5]. Sandy (Talk) 00:54, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

George Beaumont's favourite painting[edit]

Good idea, uploading this to illustrate George Beaumont. However, I'm a little worried about this notice from the source website: [6] – it states categorically that the reproduction is copyrighted by the National Gallery. Does the Corel v. Bridgeman overrule that because Wikipedia's servers are in the US? I'd just like to be clear on that point, because there are a few other pictures I'd like to upload from that site. Articles for deletion: Anal Stretching[edit]

Please help me understand why the article Anal Stretching was deleted. The reason you cited was that it was a how to article (which in my opinion is arguable to begin with), but, even if it was a how to article, then clearly it should just be edited and amended to not be a how-to article and still be referenced and included in wikipedia? I fully realise the mature nature of the article/concept, but it is nonetheless a factual concept that not many people are aware of, it has purposes including medical, novel, and sexual. DYK[edit]

I was watching Lar's edits because I was going to ask him how he did the credits, and I happened to see the note he left on your talk page. I went to Next Update, and I saw Bakasuprman already added a DYK with a picture, so Lar's was left out. Also, see my edit summary at T:DYKT: "2 moved to Next Update. Next time, Lar. :-p". I saw you removed it afterwards, thinking that someone hadn't updated Next Update, and I was going to message you, but I thought you would understand what happened. Ehh...whatever, we'll get Lar in later today. Nishkid64 00:44, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Platypusary[edit]

Thanks for enlightening me about the above-referenced concept. I had always been under the mistaken impression that Hugh Hefner lived in a platypusary. --Hokeman 03:41, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

more aminal articles.....[edit]

Hi, If you're thinking of working on any more animal or plant articles have you seen Kelly Martin's paypal reward for animal and plant articles in her december archive? Kangaroo is the Aussie collaboration for the fortnight but I think it has a rather long way to go. I have also nominated Diplodocus for FA - and would appreciate any feedback. cheers Cas Liber 09:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Caps on animal names[edit]

Hey, there, know you're busy, but hope you'll find time for a quick answer here - you told me something once about capitalization on animals and species (during Thylacine) that went right over my head - can you look at the caps here?
