Introduction to contentious topics[edit]

You have recently edited a page related to Eastern Europe or the Balkans, a topic designated as contentious. This standard message is designed as an introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have special powers in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

  • adhere to the purposes of Wikipedia;
  • comply with all applicable policies and guidelines;
  • follow editorial and behavioural best practice;
  • comply with any page restrictions in force within the area of conflict; and
  • refrain from gaming the system.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{Ctopics/aware}} template.

Please also see the consensus on usage of Kiev/Kyiv. Thanks. Mellk (talk) 22:23, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This is anything but contentious as Kyiv is OFFICIALLY and globally the correct spelling of our capital. Shame on you. I don't need to see anything except your bias and ignorance. YevheniyaL (talk) 22:23, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We have policies. Please familiarize yourself with them first. Mellk (talk) 22:25, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The real world also has policies, please familiarize yourself with it. Please familiarize yourself with the CORRECT SPELLING and REAL contentious issues such as leaving russified spelling of the capital of the country invaded by russia. Every policy should be updated from time to time. Now is the time. You are wrong both factually and morally.
p.s. Please familiarize yourself with the concept of westplaining and ignorance and trying to play both fields. YevheniyaL (talk) 22:29, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Kyiv is OFFICIALLY recognized as a CORRECT spelling, it's a global consensus, maybe you should catch up with the times, instead of trying to play both fields. kiev is WRONG and disrespectful and you will tell me, a Ukrainian with a degree in English how to spell the name of MY capital?! Do your research, open your eyes. You can't leave russified spelling in times when russia tries to destroy our independency, this is just absurd! YevheniyaL (talk) 22:27, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You were already linked the relevant policies. As such, if you do not wish to follow any of them, then you can prepare to lose the ability to edit (see WP:NOTHERE). Mellk (talk) 22:29, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The real world also has policies, please familiarize yourself with it. Please familiarize yourself with the CORRECT SPELLING and REAL contentious issues such as leaving russified spelling of the capital of the country invaded by russia. Please familiarize yourself with the WAR and historical/geopolitical implications of incorrect spelling. Every policy should be updated from time to time. Now is the time. You are wrong both factually and morally.
p.s. Please familiarize yourself with the concept of westplaining and ignorance and trying to play both fields and talking down to a person in the warzone.

The real contentious issues is to leave WRONG russified spelling when it's a global standard to spell it as KYIV. By refusing to use the proper spelling, YOU are becoming the contentinous issue. Also, it's only contentious if you refuse to listen to Ukrainians and try to please russians and their allies thus supporting historical injustice. SHAME on you and your stupid policy. YevheniyaL (talk) 22:35, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See WP:RGW and kindly refrain from ad hominem. Mellk (talk) 22:36, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You had time to familiarize yourself with REAL contentious issues such as explaining to a UKRAINIAN how to spell the name of THEIR capital and the geopolitical/historical implications of incorrect spelling. You had also time to familiarize yourself with the horrors of wars and with concepts of westplaining. You had also your whole life to familiarize yourself with MORALITY. Your threats are an empty sound, I am right both factually and morally, do what you want and continue to live your sheltered life. YevheniyaL (talk) 22:33, 17 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
