Hi Willscrlt. Well, that hasn't been the first time Twinkle has done that to me. I tag a high volume of images with Twinkle and I always thought I caught those errors but, well, I guess not. I appreciate you letting me know. Best, FASTILYsock (TALK) 23:59, 11 November 2009 (UTC)

Category suppression how-to guide

Discussion moved to Wikipedia talk:Category suppression. —Willscrlt “Talk” ) 05:22, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

I would love your feedback regarding Wikipedia talk:Category suppression#About ((cat handler)). I noticed you have read it (since you list it at the WikiProject), but I have updated that message today since I have been doing some more code testing and thinking about how {{cat handler}} should work. And I would like to have your feedback before I start building that template.
And I have some comments about Wikipedia:WikiProject Category Suppression. I'll leave them here since I think it wouldn't be nice to have negative comments on the talk page of the WikiProject page:
1: A minor wording issue: A "task force" is usually a subgroup under a WikiProject. A whole WikiProject is not called a task force here at Wikipedia.
2: As I have mentioned before, I think having a WikiProject probably is overkill. Using Wikipedia:Category suppression and its talk page probably is enough to coordinate category suppression work. Of course, I don't know what your plans with that WikiProject is so I might be wrong.
--David Göthberg (talk) 15:06, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Good morning!
1. I happen to like the structure that a WikiProject can bring to collaborative work. Obviously if we were talking about just one template or something, it would be overkill. However, I think there is a lot that can be accomplished beyond that. The reasons for the WP instead of just coordinating things via the how-to page include:
a) I dislike the idea of organizing anything like this on the page designed to discuss the how-to. We would be discussing things that the average user reading the how-to is highly unlikely to care about, and the discussion is likely to get somewhat lengthy. A WikiProject is for coordinating activities between interested editors, and that's really what we would be doing, so why not put it somewhere where that type of activity is encouraged and acceptable? I don't want to upset people who are sticklers for rules.
b) WikiProject talk page banners are an established way of tagging articles that need certain types of work. By using a modified banner, we can similarly tag talk pages of templates that support CatSup, should never support it, or need the feature added to it. We can also rank the importance of implementing it (a highly utilized meta template with thousands of inclusions probably would be more important than a template used only on a handful of pages). The standard categories used by WikiProjects will work equally well for our efforts, and would likely not be nominated for deletion since they would be WikiProject-based rather than article-space based.
c) We may attract more goodwill and interested editors if we formally organize. That would mean more hands and brains to help out when things fall behind.
d) I think that it could be good if most templates were reviewed and identified as to supporting, not supporting, excluding, or needing CatSup support. I can't think of any way of doing that in a way that wouldn't offend people than by tagging the talk pages with a WP banner. They are highly common and very useful.
2. Task Force - I plan for it to be an actual task force under either WP Templates (most likely) or WP Categories (not as good of a match). Then again, it may just be a sibling project to both and then I'll drop the TF name. Another possibility is a WP that is a cross-wiki WP to help with category suppression on multiple projects. *shrug* Not quite sure yet. I noticed that you you have the {{If pagename}} in place on Commons. CatSup is unofficially in use there, too. It might be nice to coordinate the efforts on all the wikis (in which case this should really be a MetaWiki WikiProject, not just an en.wiki one).
3. As far as {{cat handler}} goes, I think a lot of your logic is sound, but I'm confused as to where and how it would be used. Before coding and implementing the logic, perhaps you could draft up some more background info on it... why and where it is needed, what problem is solves or process it simplifies, etc. I get part of it, but I'm just not seeing the whole picture. Therefore, it's kind of hard for me to offer constructive input. If you like, you can move all the discussion and development over to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Category Suppression/Templates/Cat handler. After it's developed and tested, we can move it into Template space. Collaborative template development is another benefit of working under the umbrella of a WikiProject.
I don't mind negativity about the WP, though I greatly respect you for your decision to not post it there. I think we will collaborate well together. Any other concerns or thoughts? —Willscrlt “Talk” ) 15:58, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
a-d: Ah, now I see why you need a WikiProject (or a task force under an existing WikiProject). Thanks for the explanation.
2: Eh, what? The {{if pagename}} template is not available at Commons. It is just some days old. And I just checked, no one has copied it there yet.
3: Okay, I'll add one or two complete examples of templates that use {{cat handler}} over at Wikipedia talk:Category suppression#About ((cat handler)). But this might be like some other cases when I have made "magic" templates: I might have to create it, fully document it, and deploy some real examples for people to fully understand what it is about.
But no need to move that discussion somewhere else right away, since I am planning to move that discussion to the talk page of the template as soon as I have created the template.
--David Göthberg (talk) 16:26, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi again. I have now added a bunch of full examples over at Wikipedia talk:Category suppression#About ((cat handler)). I hope that should be enough so you and others can understand how I think {{cat handler}} should work. And if we make {{cat handler}} work the right way, then I think it could be useful on almost all templates that do categorisation.
--David Göthberg (talk) 22:18, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
Hi once more! As you probably already know I have now written a long response over at Template talk:Cat handler. There is one thing there I would like to handle as soon as possible: We need to agree on the new name of the template, so I can move it to that name. Since I want to start documenting it and fix some other things, all of which will cause a bunch of subpages. And I'd prefer moving the template before causing more subpages. With this I don't mean its syntax is fixed, just that adding documentation will make it easier for everyone to know what it currently does, and thus easier to discuss how it should work.
--David Göthberg (talk) 08:08, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
I would like your feedback on the syntax for {{if pagename}}, since we are now deploying that template among others in the {{cat handler}}. I have written up my question and some examples at Template talk:If pagename#Pattern syntax, if/when you feel like it take a look.
--David Göthberg (talk) 19:27, 15 November 2009 (UTC)
I have responded to your message at my talk page. And I have a follow up question there, since I would instead like to add myself as a "Friend of the project".
