Thanks for the welcome

Appreciate it, and also all the links. Helps quite a bit in my self-study program on Wikipedia. I am very much impressed by the standards of the project and its welcoming attitude toward newcomers. --Lastexit 16:01, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Roywood.jpg

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Roywood.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -SCEhardT 22:14, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Images

Following certain users and bots hunting me and my images down - I shall no longer place any images on wikipedia other than images taken by me with my camera. However if any silly little bots come and tell me that my own images are not mine or have something wrong with the taging, I will.... well we won't even go into that. Benjaminstewart05 12:31, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

The thing is that those images didn't specify source information, which is required to help comply with copyright law. Also the proper license tag has to be used and I suspect that those two images listed above are not GFDL (they might be fair use). Take a look at the links given in the above message for more information. I know image issues can be confusing, but don't give up if you think they are needed for an article :) Petros471 16:17, 2 June 2006 (UTC)
I will however attempt at some stage to sort out the issues with the above images. Benjaminstewart05 21:06, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Wikipedia:Media help

I didn't reply earlier as I've been away for a couple of days. I don't think page protection is really needed for that page, as looking at the history they have received remarkably little vandalism (I was quite surprised!). If it was I'd semi protect (to only stop new users) from editing, in case non-admin editors have useful contributions to make (though I agree it probably doesn't need much editing, and I would have protected if it was subject to more vandalism). See WP:RFPP if you need a page protected when I'm not around. Petros471 16:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Re:Blocking

Similar to above, as the IP stopped editing a while ago, I won't block. See WP:AIV for reporting simple vandalism (always report users needing a block there when I'm not obviously online, as it gets attention from a lot of admins).

How are the exams going? Petros471 16:26, 2 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for clarifying these issues, and providing those useful links, much appreciated. My exams are going fine, 3 more weeks left! But wikipedia can provide some useful background information to studies, so that is good.

International spelling

Hi, re: your edit at community portal, changing humor to humour. Please don't change international variations of words to your own country's preferred variant. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style#National varieties of English and the table at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (spelling) for details. Thanks. :) -Quiddity 18:17, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for contacting me with this query but after having read those guidelines again, I stand by my edit. I was using the form which is used in the United Kingdom, which for neutral articles (neutral from dialect or region) is the more pure and commonly used. I do not believe that "humor" is the international variant, but rather the americanised variant, and this is the way it is viewed by most. Unfortunately I fear that if I revert it, this would cause a small edit war, which I don't want, so it will stay in its americanised form. Benjaminstewart05 18:54, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh, i absolutely agree that it's the americanised variant (i'm from the UK originally, am Canadian currently ;)
But i'm going by the final point "If all else fails, consider following the spelling style preferred by the first major contributor (that is, not a stub) to the article." Which i'm interpreting (i'm fairly sure accurately?) as not having a piped link that differs from the article title. We've got WP:COLOUR, they've got Category:Humor. So it goes. ;)
You're welcome to revert, i won't re-revert (but anyone else might). Thanks. -Quiddity 19:48, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok that's fine, it will stay, its not really that important to be honest, just a pedantic thing :). I won't revert - seems a little pointless. Benjaminstewart05 20:09, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Thank you

New User

Hello and Greetings,

I wanted to ask you for a quick heads up on what Wikipedia has to offer. (Is that why you're here?) I saw you have been awarded a Barnstar, what's that all about? Are there other awards? Who hands them out? Yada-yada-yada ... . I saw you are Canadian now? (Welcome.) I was born in Canada and lived there for 17 years. I am now in the States in Law School. I hope your exams went fine, I can stress-relate <:0 !

Fill me in on whatever you can. Cool, ...Later.

K.J. Myllynen

Hi there!
I'm not from Canada, that was someone else's message on my talk page! No, i'm in England in the middle of my exams, wonderful (not).
I was given a barnstar by somebody for my work on an article, barnstars are given if you do something particularly special or noteworthy, or make a steady stream of useful edits, look at Wikipedia:Barnstars for more information. Anyone can give them out, but they are for something special.
I think that the links provided above give a lot of information about wikipedia. But try something, just type in something random and see what comes up, you will soon find out that wikipedia has loads to offer, it has an article on nearly everything and is probably one of the largest compendiums of human knowledge you will find. So if you have any more queries, dont hesisitate to ask and remember to sign off with ~~~~ Regards Benjaminstewart05 20:13, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Thnx!

Thank you for the welcome mssg... I'll keep on helping in whatever I can help correcting, editing & completing

--Remis Ramos 20:49, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

No problem, if you have any queries or problems, you can always contact me! - have fun and be bold! Benjaminstewart05 20:51, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Your welcome messages

What template are you using? It's better than {welcome}! Dweller 15:57, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I'm using {{subst:welcomeg|--~~~~}} . It seems the most welcoming as it is more graphicy and has loads more useful stuff on it than most of the other welcome messages. Benjaminstewart05 16:01, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Exams

Good luck! Anonymous_anonymous_Have a Nice Day 19:25, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks! Benjaminstewart05 19:27, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

Please stop editing that now. You've just done a copy and paste page move and if you continue you'll make it harder for me to clean up afterwards. I'll explain more later. Petros471 16:36, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

First of all please don't do copy and paste page moves. It is important that the page history is kept intact which is why there is a 'move' tab, which moves the page history allong with the article. Just check with this and if you still think the page should be moved then feel free to go ahead, but actually move it rather than copy it ok? Don't worry about it I'm used to fixing these now, just now you know for future reference... Petros471 16:45, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for that. I understand now, I thought it might be a bit iffy with the page history. I have read the guidelines about the definite article at the start of a title, however I think that the definite article should go here, because the school's actual name is The Portsmouth Grammar School rather than Portsmouth Grammar School and this is what is used by the school. So can I try moving it properly? Benjaminstewart05 16:56, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
Ok, you can give it a go, you're probably right about the title (I only history merged into the old one because it was easier, as that's where the majority of edits sat). They didn't used to let non-admins move pages 'over' ones that already had content there, but I think you can move then over pages with just a re-direct. If you can't let me know and I'll move it. Cheers, Petros471 17:01, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
It worked. Thank you for your help! Benjaminstewart05 17:05, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
I've just done a history merge on the talk page as well. All fixed now :) Petros471 17:08, 15 June 2006 (UTC)

Examinations

Oh, you have exams and you are here. I saw you when you edited the page Levan Ramishvili and I enetered into an edit-conflict with you. You were faster to bold the page name. All the best for the examinations! --Bhadani 17:11, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, I only have 2 more to go, so I can afford to have a little wikitime! Thanks for the message. Benjaminstewart05 09:21, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Citing Speeches

hey, and thanks for the welcome

I just had a question. I have in formation that I want to put into an article, which comes from a speech I heard by an expert firsthand. How do I cite it? Isaac Benaron 19:14, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi there,
This might be helpful also this furthermore this may be able to give you some useful information.
In general it should depend on who the expert is and in what field, is he a reliable source? Can it count as primary evidence of research? Can it count as reliable secondary evidence of history? If so, it can be cited. It is hard to cite speeches, and I couldn't find very much on it. You could just leave a foot note next to the quote and after the quote place the expert's name, and down at the bottom where the corresponding foot note would be, place the date and place and what affiliation the expert has to prove reliability. If it is a hotly contested topic, someone may ask you about it, so be prepared to justify its presence!
To place a foot note, follow the example given here, Wikipedia:Footnote. I hope this helps, if you have any more queries, you are welcome to ask! Benjaminstewart05 19:32, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

Barnstar

Hey, I just wanted to thank you for the minor barnstar. I really appreciate it and I'll keep up the effort. I hope you do well on your remaining exams.--smcro 20:20, 19 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks

Benjamin, thanks for the welcome and the offer of help. To be honest I have no idea what I'm doing, but this is pretty fun.

Shalom,

Question

Ben, One of the sites that I put up "High Council of B'nei Noah" can only be found if you type it in as High Council of B'nei Noah, however another article I've written "B'nei Noah" comes up whichever way I type it in. How can I fix this problem?

Thanks

Hanoahide

Hi there, well, I have added a redirect so that if you type it all in in lower case, it comes up with it. The problem here was that it was a long title, so the search engine for wikipedia might not direct you straight to the article, so when you make articles like that, it might be a good idea to add redirects for common spelling mistakes. For more on how to create redirects see this. If I haven't answered your question(!), then please feel free to retort and I will attempt to offer more explaination! - also it might not be a good idea to lay out an article in question and answer form, see Wikipedia:Guide to layout for more information on this. I will add the template {{wikify}} to it as well. Another thing, to make it easier and look better when you are writing messages, sign your messages with ~~~~. Thanks. Benjaminstewart05 17:55, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

Need some help

Hi, i am writing this message in the hope that you can briefly look over an article i have created here Gintor.

I would appreceate some feedback in how i can get it more in line with the wikipedia guidelines as my intentions are good and i am willing to make any compromises to prevent the article being deleted.

I am having trouble understanding people's comments in the deletion discussion, as they post using shorthand and quoting rules that as a brand new user, i have difficulty fully understanding.

any help is much appreceated. Thanks

--N0 m3RcY 16:06, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Hi there, this is getting quite heated, and I would remind all experienced users not to bite the newcomers!! (glare!). Essentially, wikipedia articles must assert notability, in which case how will anyone know whether it is actually a big website, company etc... how will they know that it is as good as it is and to a certain extent whether what is written is true. Furthermore, things need to be notable because if every single website was put onto wikipedia, they would need gigantic servers which would melt every few days. The rules for notability of websites are outlined here, Wikipedia:Notability (web), which I see someone else has pointed you to before. I understand that it may be difficult to find sources of notability for the website, but if there are any statistics, they might help, furthermore, when I read the article, it seemed (to my non-websitey mind) a bit non-sensical, in that I couldn't really understand what it was going on about, and this I think, was part of the reason for the nomination. Try rewriting it to a certain extent. If it is deleted, that is very unfortunate, but you can always create articles on other things or edit, and I hope that you do, don't be down heartened by this.
I suggest reading some of the guidelines and links on my welcome message, and also, how about perusing through some of the links from here, Wikipedia:Shortcuts, I will place something positive on the deletion page, but if it is deleted, it is not out of spite, but because doesn't meet certain criteria. I hope this helps, maybe not in a practical way, but hopefully in not biting newcomers (another glare!) I can provide at least some explanation!. Regards Benjaminstewart05:-) 19:03, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

Your edits to Andy Warhol

Why did you revert my edit on this article? I was reverting vandalism to the article, and your edit actually appears to have added more vandalism. EVOCATIVEINTRIGUE TALKTOME | EMAILME | IMPROVEME 15:21, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I did straight afterwards revert it further and remove the vandalism. I have recently been approved for using vandalproof, and so I am trying to get to grips with it, and in this case, with the rollback I made a mistake which I then had to go onto internet explorer to rectify. I hope that this isn't a major problem, and I will try and be more less clumsy with vandalproof! Benjaminstewart05:-) 15:25, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Wow, ok

Ok, that is a lot to do. I suppose I haven't followed the regs properly for pictures. I need to do something about that. Benjaminstewart05:-) 13:13, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

I had an account

I gave it up because I hate what goes on in controversial pages...not enough people checking for NPOV...

Sorry for the patronising message then! Benjaminstewart05:-) 20:32, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Images

Hey, could you please check if this picture http://www.thestrelz.com/nolde.jpg is suitable to be placed in my article William Nolde. Im checking the issue myself but would appreciate your opinion.--SGGH 19:44, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi there. Well, I am not really very good with images, as you can see from my talk page, I have been harassed about my image use! However I would be able to say that it depends on who created the image and whether you have their permission to use it, you then need (once you have permission) to put the relevant tag on it. I would have a look at Wikipedia:Image use policy for more information. Or alternatively, leave a message with the image police, the person who (rightly so) tells me off for my image tagging! All the best. Benjaminstewart05:-) 13:24, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism???!!!!

Hello Ben

I was using wikipedia when a message came up to say that I had a new message - the new message said

'Please stop. If you continue to vandalize pages, as you did to The Portsmouth Grammar School, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. Benjaminstewart05:-) 14:03, 9 July 2006 (UTC)'

Please can you give me some more details, I've never been on the Portsmouth Grammar School Pages (until today) so I'm interested to know how this happened. I use a work computer so it could have been someone using the computer before my time. By the way I'm not very computer literate so please avoid using techy phrases.

Thanks

Daniel

Ok, well, you don't have an account, so anyone using your computer will be registered under the same name - a set of numbers for your internet portal. The vandalism in question is logged here. If you know anyone called H. Booth then it was probably them. The vandalism is cleared up so that's ok. But perhaps you should get an account, this is password protected so that only you can edit from it. I hope that I have cleared up this little problem, if you have any more queries, don't hesitate to ask! Benjaminstewart05:-) 06:59, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

The Marmite connoisseur Lesley Dusart

Hi there, while Lesley Dusart (presumably of Porsmouth Grammar School, class of 2008) suggests a decent Marmite recipe I'm not sure why it is particularly attributed to Lesley and as such I intend to edit it out. Please leave a comment on the Marmite board if you feel it should be reverted. Cheers. --163.1.223.30 17:13, 19 September 2006 (UTC)
