Victorian Speleological Association Inc.[edit]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Victorian Speleological Association Inc., suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Thanks for providing a reason for removing the tag. I still think it does not meet our criteria for inclusion under the relevant guideline for organisations such as this one, therefore I have nominated it for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Victorian Speleological Association Inc. to reach community consensus on whether it should be kept or deleted. You are encouraged to have your say there as to why you think it should be kept. Looking at your username, you may also be interested in reading Wikipedia's guidelines on Conflict of Interest as well. Finally have you considered creating an article such as Caving in Australia. Provided you can find sources, you could include much of the information in the existing article, avoid notability problems and some of the perceived conflict of interest issues. Cheers, Mattinbgn/ talk 01:32, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm in the process of collecting journal references for the information included on the page. On the topic of 'conflict of interest', I can't see that being a valid excuse. From my experience people submit information to the wikipedia because it is of direct interest to them and they are involved with whatever they are contributing about. With that being said, I can quickly find a similar conflict of interest in the form of Oxford University Cave Club with the author of the page an employee of the University. Also, if the wikipedia is supposed to be an information source, what is wrong with having 'first hand' information instead of regurgitated information from alternative sources?
Pointing out other breaches of Wikipedia policy and guidelines does not change the fact that this article is in breach of policy and guidelines. With regard to "first hand" information, please read the guidelines on Original research and attribution to see why Wikipedia does not accept "first hand" information. These policies have been extensively debated by the Wikipedia community and are core components of the project. I will leave the standard welcome message at the top of your page. Please follow the links and hopefully it will be of some help to you when adding content in the future. Lastly, please "sign" your posts on talk pages by adding ~~~~ to end of your messages. That way it is clear who is speaking to who if someone is looking.-- Mattinbgn/ talk 02:18, 1 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
