Your edits on the ref desk

[edit]

It seems you have unintentionally deleted some posts on the maths ref desk. See this.-Shahab (talk) 10:43, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am terribly sorry! I don't have no idea how I have mannaged to do that. I only eddited posts of mine... How can I bring it back, do yu know who can help with that?? Topologia clalit (talk) 12:53, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Dont worry. I fixed it almost immediately. No harm done -Shahab (talk) 18:18, 10 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

[edit]

As a linguist, I know that the word "Topologia" you use in your user-name - means topology in many languages, e.g. Finnish, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Spanish, and the like. However, as a linguist I can also state that the word "clalit" means nothing in the languages mentioned above! You should know that! Eliko (talk) 11:29, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
This is nice of you to notice..:)
Anyhow.. you should have also tried Hebrew.. clalit in Hebrew means 'general'..:)
(Also,I apologize in advance for my spelling mistakes..)
Topologia clalit (talk) 13:16, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh really? So "topology general"? Why did you choose "topologia clalit" rather than "topology general"? We are in the English Wikipedia, not in the Hebrew one, right? Anyways, I highly recommend that you look at my user page, where you'll find some bizzare languages I speak. Now, try to guess what my user-name means..:) Eliko (talk) 14:09, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In Hebrew, the order between the subject of the sentence and a word describing it (is it called an object?) is the oposite then in English. So 'topologia clalit' actually means General Topology, a name which I think I tried and was not available.. all the good names are usually not available...:) so using my language is some kind of a solution for that..
I'll have a look at your page I find it interesting :)
Topologia clalit (talk) 15:20, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not "subject/object", but rather: "noun/adjective". Anyways, thank you for the interesting information about the unusual way Hebrew orders its words. Now, try to guess what my user name means. This may be quite easy, once you look at the beginning of my user page (on the right hand), where I indicate (by userboxes) some bizzare languages I speak...:) Eliko (talk) 15:50, 12 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Clalit is also where he'll need to go if too much Topologia turns out bad for his health... -- Meni Rosenfeld (talk) 18:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there :) nice to see somone using my own language here :) Topologia clalit (talk) 05:55, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've asked you twice, to look at my userpage (on the right hand), where I indicate (by userboxes) the languages I speak. Why haven't you done that so far? Eliko (talk) 19:12, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Eliko, you seem obsessed with Topologia clalit looking at your user page. Why would s/he want to?! Regarding your comment about "the unusual way Hebrew orders its words", Hebrew is not at all unusual in having the reverse ordering of its nouns and adjective when compared to English. Take the phrase a red car. The noun is car and the adjective is red. In French it's une voiture rouge, in Portuguese it's um carro vermelho and in Spanish un coche rojo. Each of these phrases, word-for-word, means a car red. Around 800 million people have French, Portuguese or Spanish as a native or first language. Around 1.2 billion people have one of those three languages as a first or second language. But "as a linguist", I'm sure you already knew that. Fly by Night (talk) 19:46, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to know what I meant by the unusual way Hebrew orders its words, you should look at my userpage (on the right hand), where I indicate (by userboxes) the languages I speak, and then you'll get an answer to your first question as well. Eliko (talk) 20:10, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Initial context-setting

[edit]

The following is not a proper way to start a Wikipedia article:

A point x is called a weakly FU (wFU) point if

At the very least you need some initial context-setting that tells the lay reader that mathematics is what the article will be about. Michael Hardy (talk) 01:52, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK thanks. I have added an initial context-setting and will try to add some more knoledge and details in the following days. Topologia clalit (talk) 06:39, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pytkeev space

[edit]

I went to the Pytkeev space article in the hope of being able to answer you question on the mathematics reference desk. I noticed that you started the article and that you added most of the contect ([1]). It's starting to take shape nicely, but there's quite a lot of work that needs doing to the article. For example, almost all of the notation used goes without being defined. I started off trying to improve the article by adding definitions, but I must confess that it was too much and I gave up. You really should take the time to introduce most notation, even if you just say "x belongs to the union UV" instead of simply xUV. Remember that this is an encyclopaedia and not a mathematical reference text. I like Wikipedia because it gives me the chance to showcase my mathematics. It's highly likely that Wikipedia is the only access that the wo/man-on-the-street might have to higher level mathematics. As such, I take as much time as I can to make articles as understandable and accessable as possible. With some luck, the wo/man-on-the-street might develop a liking for mathematics and may decide to study further. Also, it's usually a good idea to use standard HTML in-line instead of LaTeX mark-up. This is Wikipedia policy; see WP:MOSMATH, and in particular this section. If you need any help working on the article then do please let me know. I would be more than happy to help. Fly by Night (talk) 17:09, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for paying so much attention. I haven't thought about it that way. That the text should be also readble to unknowledgble readers. You are very right. I'll fix it in the next few days it's not a problem at all. I'm not femiliar with the second language you have mentioned. So I'll either study it, or explain every single sign which I use in Latex also in words. I'll be very glad if you'll find the time to have a second look at it in a few days and let me know if there are more things that in your opinion should be fixed or added. Thanks! Topologia clalit (talk) 17:47, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've changed the LaTeX into HTML already ([2]). Please could you check it for typos? HTML is just normal Wikipedia writing. So UV is HTML, when is LaTeX. When you use HTML you will need to add spacing yourself. But Wikipedia might try to split the expression and start on a new line. Use {{nowrap}} to stop it from doing that; e.g. {{nowrap|1=''U'' ∩ ''V''}} tells Wikipedia not to split (wrap) the expression at the end of a line; the double apostrophe: ''U'' tells Wikipedia to put the letter in italics.
You don't need to explain every symbol you use it total detail. Just give its name and then link to the Wikipedia article about that operator. There will always be people reading maths articles that don't understand them. You can never hope to make an article accessible to everyone. You just need to make it as accessible as possible to as many people as possible. Fly by Night (talk) 18:05, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK I see.. No problem then, I'll use the wikipedia signs as you have mentioned. I went over your corrections and it was perfectly OK.. Thanks! Topologia clalit (talk) 18:16, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've looked at the paper and most of the article is a verbatim copy of the paper. Wikipedia has very strict copyright regulations; see Wikipedia:Copyrights. I should flag the article for deletion, but I won't; not yet at least. I'll give you some time. You're going to need to change the article substantially, and do it now! If another editor comes across the article then they will flag it for deletion. If Wikipedia allows copyright infingements then it will be sued, it will go bankrupt and it will close. That's why it's treated so seriously. Please, fix it ASAP. Fly by Night (talk) 18:27, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OK I see what you mean. I wasn't aware of that. I took everything from the article but I thought that If I give it as a reference in the bottom then it is OK. I think I'll just write a new one following your instructions below.. Thanks for your help and sorry about all of that. I'm very new here.. I guess it will take me some time to acclimate.. Topologia clalit (talk) 19:19, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to try an do a new one?

[edit]

The article hasn't been deleted. It has been blanked and replaced with a copyright template. You mentioned that you could do another version of the article which didn't break any copyright rules. I would really like to see you make one. Please take the time to write a new, copyright-problem-free, version of the article. I will help you with anything non-specific. I don't really know enough of the mathematics involved to contribute any real technical content; but I do know about maths in general, and about writing nice maths articles. Let me know if I can help... Fly by Night (talk) 18:44, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I see that someone deleted my article. Probably it's the right thing to do. I think, maybe you should check another one which I wrote together with the one that was deleted. It's Weakly Frechet–Urysohn space. I wrote it in a similar way to the other one, so you might also have the same problems and may better be removed too.. thanks sorry..
