Nigel Slater
I was surprised to see no mention of Nigel Slater's sexuality on his page, then noticed the Talk: discussion. I'd like to add a mention that explains the situation but, as you talked about the OTRS case, I figured I should check with you as to whether or not it was adequately clarified.
I've added a paragraph, with careful citations, including to DS's Talk: edit (because I couldn't work out how to reference an OTRS ticket directly) but, if it's still not acceptable, please do just revert my edit (because I have autoconfirmed privileges, so it will already be live).
For your possible convenience, the paragraph itself reads:
- While the BBC dramatisation of his memoirs Toast portrayed the adolescent Slater as experiencing same-sex attraction[1][2] and a 2005 interview with the website AfterElton.com described Slater as "openly gay",[3] Slater and his girlfriend objected to a description of him as openly gay on Wikipedia in the past[4] and does not discuss his private life.

Recent software changes
- The latest version of MediaWiki (1.23wmf8) was added to test wikis and MediaWiki.org on December 19. It will be enabled on non-Wikipedia wikis on December 31 and on all Wikipedia wikis on January 2, 2014 (calendar).
- You can now test the new search tool ("CirrusSearch") on all Wikisource, Wiktionary and Wikimedia chapter wikis hosted on Foundation servers. Enable "New search" in your Beta features preferences. [1]
- There was a bug where notifications were not sent when the signature of the user leaving the message linked to a translated namespace. The problem was fixed in the software and will soon be fixed on Wikimedia sites. [2] [3]
- You can now use the log-in system for external tools (OAuth) on all Wikimedia wikis that use the unified login. [4]
- If your wiki adds stars or other icons to interwiki links for featured articles in other languages, you may need to change the JavaScript code. [5]
- You can thank other users for their edits even if your browser does not have JavaScript. [6] [7]
- All edits made through Flow, the new discussion system for MediaWiki, are now visible in user's contributions. You can test it on the Flow talk page on MediaWiki.org. [8] [9]
- You can test a visual tool that shows edits made to an article over time. It only works for English Wikipedia pages for now and is slow on long articles. [10]
- You can test the first version of the new mobile Wikipedia app for Android and iOS. [11]
- Translatewiki.net, the site where you can translate the MediaWiki software, now has a new main page for users without an account. [12]
Future software changes
- There will be no technical changes this week (December 23 to December 29) due to end-of-year holidays.
- When someone deletes, restores, uploads, or moves a file on Commons, pages on all wikis that use that file will be refreshed. [13] [14]
- New users will soon have their user and talk pages added to their watchlist as soon as they create an account. [15] [16].
- The new search tool (CirrusSearch) will not show the text of versions of a page that have been hidden. [17] [18]
- You will soon be able to see the raw HTML created by some wikitext by using the Special:ExpandTemplates tool. [19] [20]

Recreated Deleted Page
Hi - I wanted to give you a heads-up, as you were the deleting admin, that I recreated the previously deleted page Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, which had previously been created by User:Scottrdriver. It appears the original iteration of this page was unsourced and promotional and definitely warranted deletion. I've attempted to rectify those issues in its recreation. Autopatrolled
Hi Tom. User:NotWith has considerable issues with thier mass creations of unreferenced taxonomic stubs and other problmems. They are also uncommunicative. As you accorded the Autopatrolled right a couple of years ago I'm letting you know that if they don't respond to the advice, I am considering removing their Autopatrolled flag. - Thanks for letting me know, Kudpung. There's a few issues here. Firstly, yes, the articles NotWith has started need sources. I've added a few. That said, I'd like to hear from NotWith before removing their autopatrolled status. They seem to be adding a lot of content, and I'd much rather if they are were given the opportunity to discuss their changes before we go straight for sanctions. I'd rather not alienate someone who is trying to improve Wikipedia in this area if we could have a discussion about how they can improve their editing first. - Tom, 'autopatrolled' is not an award of merit for having created a certain number of articles. It was designed to relieve some of the work for the page patrollers. If this is o longer working and patrollers still need to review red flagged articles in the page feed, than I feel the Autopatrolled 'right' should be removed.
- As a retired professional linguist and author of published works on lexicography, there is no need for my grammar to be questioned. The word 'they' (with its counterparts them, their, and themselves) as a singular pronoun to refer to a person of unspecified sex has been used since at least the 16th century. In the late 20th century, as the traditional use of he to refer to a person of either sex came under scrutiny on the grounds of sexism, this use of they became more common. It is now generally accepted in contexts where it follows an indefinite pronoun such as anyone, no one, someone, or a person, as in anyone can join if they are a resident and each to their own. In other contexts, coming after singular nouns, the use of they is now common, though less widely accepted, especially in formal contexts. Sentences such as ask a friend if they could help are still criticized for being ungrammatical. Recent software changes
- You can now see the text of DjVu and PDF files in search results on wikis testing the new search tool (CirrusSearch). [21] [22]
- With the new version of the Wikibase DataModel extension, you can install it outside Wikimedia wikis. [23]
VisualEditor news
- Images are now shown inside VisualEditor as HTML5
<figure />elements. Comments are welcome. [24] - You can now test a basic version of VisualEditor on mobile devices; see this article as an example.

- On December 23, Wikimedia Labs was broken for 4 hours due to an NFS problem. [25]
Future software changes
- CirrusSearch will be added as the second search method for Spanish (es), French (fr), Portuguese (pt) and Russian (ru) wikis on December 30. Wikimedia Commons, Wikispecies and Wikinews users will also be able to enable it in their Beta Features options.
- AbuseFilter log entries will be visible in CheckUser tool reports. [26] [27]

Prix Tour-Apollo Award
Yesterday you added an "unreferenced" tag to the article Prix Tour-Apollo Award. Having some general interest in the award (I do a bunch of the awards stuff for the ISFDB), I worked on the page today, added additional information, a handful of citations, and some links. I believe that it is now eligible to have that "unreferenced" tag removed. Furthermore, the page also had a "Lit-award-stub" tag on it, which I would also nominate for removal. I think this page has pretty much everything on it that is reasonable to include. The French Wikipedia page includes a few other details, such as the names of the people on the jury, but I don't see anything there that is important enough to an English audience to import to this page.
