Gill Morley is an English classical and popular violinist, arranger, composer, producer and orchestra leader. Most notably she is a touring and session violinist with British contemporary Grammy Award winning R&B act, Soul II Soul [1] . She has recorded and performed live with a range of high-profile artists including The Who[2] and Vanessa-Mae[3]. Morley is a founder-member of Echostrings [4], who released one album, Dark Advice [5] in 2009.

Biography[edit]

Morley was born in London, England, the daughter of John William and Valerie Jean Morley and sister of Juliet Morley. She started playing violin at the age of 7 was a scholarship student at the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music. She graduated from the Royal Northern College of Music, earning the title GRNCM.

Career[edit]

Morley began performing with Ellen Blair as the string section of Soul II Soul in 1988 [6] . She led the string section for Vanessa-Mae throughout the 1990s and she appears in the 1995 live DVD recording “Vanessa-Mae The Red Hot Tour: Live at the Royal Albert Hall” [7] .

She contributed violin on the song "Trilby's Piano" on The Who’s 2006 album, Endless Wire [8] . Her live work includes performing in West End and touring shows including Jeff Wayne’s “War of the Worlds” [9] at the London O2. She has also contributed violin to ex-Go-Between singer-songwriter Robert Forster’s 2015 solo album, The Evangelist [10] .

Under the artist name "Gilly Swagga" Morley co-wrote and produced two singles including, “Brexit Song” and "Keep on Shining" [11] featuring Caron Wheeler (with Jason Laidback from Love Is A Bassline) in 2019.
