Wiki articles on Singapore law[edit]

[Copied from "User talk:Jacklee"]

Hi Jacklee

I'm a fresh law student in Singapore, looking to help expand the Singapore law sections on Wiki for the benefit of everyone. You seem like the eminent Wiki-ian on this, so it would be best to approach you for advice. I am an avid reader of Wikipedia but very clueless at the administrative side of it, it is very daunting even for a tech-savvy youth. I would like to contribute articles on Singapore case law, especially on landmark cases. Hope to hear from you!

A good way to get started is to have a look at an existing article on a court case such as "Donoghue v Stevenson" and modify it. You can copy the wikitext in the article to a sandbox such as "User:Thwings/sandbox", work on the article as long as you want there, then transfer the contents of the sandbox to the article. Here's a tip: if you are writing an article on Ong Ah Chuan v Public Prosecutor and have created the article in your sandbox, go to "Ong Ah Chuan v Public Prosecutor", type "{{subst:User:Thwings/sandbox}}" and save the article. Voilà – whatever is in the sandbox will be transferred to the article page. For information on how you should format articles see "Wikipedia:Manual of Style", and on referencing see "Wikipedia:Citing sources". Feel free to ask any other questions by leaving messages here on on my talk page. — Cheers, JackLee talk 15:45, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I hope you don't mind me using your article on Chng Suan Tze v. Minister of Home Affairs as it is an SGCA case which I hope to adapt for other SGCA cases. Oh and currently I have my articles-in-progress under User:Thwings/ARTICLE NAME, is this any different from having it in my sandbox? Thanks

Actually, I would suggest that you don't use "Chng Suan Tze v. Minister for Home Affairs" as an example because it is not a very well written or complete article. I wasn't the one who originally created it – I just did a bit of cleaning up here and there, such as adding {{Infobox Court Case}} to it. "Donoghue v Stevenson" is a much better example. Yes, it is absolutely fine to work on articles in subpages of your user page in the form "User:Thwings/ARTICLE NAME"; you don't have to name the subpages "sandbox". No need to leave {{talkback}} messages on my talk page as I'll put your talk page on my watchlist for now. — Cheers, JackLee talk 16:16, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good tip on that, I was mainly interested in the {{Infobox Court Case}} too. "Donoghue v Stevenson" is a perfect start as I plan to write on Duty of Care in Singapore as well. Thanks for the guidance!

Good luck. Also, do you know about {{Singapore Statute}} and {{Singapore Constitution}}? These are handy for creating links to free online versions of the Constitution and statutes. — Cheers, JackLee talk 04:59, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Don't be afraid to ask if you need any assistance in getting the layout, format, style, etc right. The community is always there to help! And you can consider nominating your new article on frontpage if it qualifies! :) - Cheers, Mailer Diablo 17:41, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
