Hello!

I have noticed your contribution to MediaWiki:Common.js and would like your help. As you see, on english wikipedia the edit button on different sections of an article is on the right side of the page. I work on dv.wikipedia and it is written from right to left (unlike en.wiki which is written left to right) In our wiki, the edit button of section is on the right side, next to the heading. Is there anyway it can be moved to the left?? Thank you very much Awaiting your response. cheers. --Glacious (talk) 20:44, 24 October 2010 (UTC)

This is bugzilla:24901, which was since fixed in the software, but the fix is not yet deployed for the wiki's yet. You can fix it locally by adding:
.editsection { float: left }
to dv:MediaWiki:Vector.css. Once the software is updated ( somewhere between now and new years eve ) this can be removed again from your local wiki. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:35, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Qui

Hi TheDJ, do you think you it would be possible make Qui compatible with the {{UserStatus}} template, if so that'd be awesome. Keep up the good work! Cheers, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 5:03pm • 06:03, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

You want qui to support the additional 5 user statuses that that specific template supports ? I never really felt like it, it would make the user menu too large. If you have a way to support it unobtrusively however, then patches are welcome. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:43, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the belated response, my watchlist is extremely long. Well Online, Away, Busy, Offline, Sleep and School/Work are the ones that'd be most useful. Also if a user has the UTC Live Clock in Preferences installed then Qui displays on the next line below the top-right nav ribbon, is there a way to fix that? Also, love HotCat, the new multi-category update is a real godsend, I'd been waiting ages for that option :) Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? • 9:23pm • 10:23, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. Re: WP:VPR#Moving the Help link in the sidebar, I believe you might be mistaken regarding "... by default, the Interaction tab is collapsed ...". I tried a few variations of browsers, all logged-out, and consistently had the "Interaction" and "Languages" sections appear open by default. (I dimly recall some arguments discussions about this...). Possibly you are seeing sections collapsed (even if logged out) due to a cookie, or something? You might wish to amend your comment at VPR. :) -- Quiddity (talk) 22:26, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

Signpost

Hey, great job! (In fact, far too good a job. In hindsight I should have found someone to make a hash of it and thus keep my own post secure. Ah well.) Apologies if I've written out any intentional deviations from previous style, but it's probably best to discuss them and agree first, rather than have some sort of ping-pong between editors. But anyway, I'm back now but feel free to contribute again in future :) - Jarry1250 [Who? Discuss.] 22:09, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Uiteraard ook een dankje aan Akoopal die jou er attent op heeft willen maken. Btw, leuk om te weten dat je een developer bent van de VLC player. Also a thank you to Akoopal, for appointing you on the problem. BTW, nice to see that you are one of the developers of VLC player. Greetings, Michaelovic (talk) 12:54, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Given the comments here (saying that Ganglia also should be added to the bypass list), and the fact that there are about 10 WMF projects, wouldn't it be more effective if there was only a "whitelist" for adding the WMF projects (which all have a secure version), such as Wikipedia, Wikiversity, Wikinews, Wiktionary, etc? Or would there be some drawbacks in doing this? HeyMid (contributions) 14:24, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

If you draw up the list, then sure. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 00:51, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
I think:
  1. commons
  2. incubator
  3. http://mediawiki.org
  4. meta
  5. wikibooks
  6. http://wikimediafoundation.org
  7. wikinews
  8. wikipedia
  9. wikiquote
  10. wikisource
  11. wikispecies
  12. wikiversity
  13. wiktionary
I think that the ones that start with "wik" can have its own paranthesis, so that we don't have to repeat the "wik" part for those projects that start with that part.
Regarding mediawiki.org and wikimediafoundation.org, it should also work using "http://www." in the beginning. If there are non-WMF projects or other missing WMF projects that have a secure version, they can easily be added by an administrator, but this is definitely the most efficient way, instead of just adding projects to the bypass list.

iPhone CSS fix

When you have a minute, could you implement MediaWiki talk:Common.css/Archive 12#Add -webkit-text-size-adjust: none; to MediaWiki:Handheld.css, please? Looks like there are no objections. --MZMcBride (talk) 05:57, 8 December 2010 (UTC)

Ok, been looking into this. jQuery does not run by default and the iphone and ipod classes can thus not be used. We need to target mobile devices, because this option works on ALL webkit, so will also disable text zooming on Safari Desktop. Solution is to use a media query like this:
@media only screen and (max-device-width: 480px) {
body {
    -webkit-text-size-adjust: none;
}
}

Tablesorter.com adaptation

(Re: this discussion from MediaWiki talk:Common.js) OK, so the planned migration is firm. I had taken the earlier answer as an definite-maybe.

I looked at the jquery.tablesorter.js script and it appears to do a good job of handling rowspan and colspan in the header, but not the body. As far as adapting it to MediaWiki, I assume we would need some function to map the existing "sortable" class to "tablesorter", or modify the .js to recognize the "sortable" class. We would also need to move the header rows into a thead block. That would give us the basic functionality, but I would assume you or someone is already working on that. Rows tagged as "sortbottom" and "unsortable" (fixed-in-place) likely present some complications that might require some changes to the core sort algorithm. Perhaps some kind of before-sort and after-sort callbacks might allow custom code to set aside and later restore the fixed data rows. I am sure there are many other issues regarding the features and quirks of the current implementation that would best be preserved to maintain backward compatibility.

Can I be of assistance? Is there a list of tasks looking for a developer? -- Tom N (tcncv) talk/contrib 02:55, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Popups

Was thinking about copying MW Popups and making my own variant, but before I create that kind of a code fork I thought I'd run an idea by you and see if you think this would make sense to change for everyone who uses the interface. The idea, put simply, is that when mousing over any talk page (user talk, article talk, WP talk, etc...) instead of seeing a preview (which I feel like is usually an out of date top line of the talk page, or some other non-relevant content) the default action would be to see the history of the page. This wouldn't change the beauty of reading popups mid-article (where you can see the lead of the other article you are hovering over) but it would benefit people who review their watchlist for vandalism... or perhaps, any time you are reviewing your watchlist the default action should be to show history. Think this would be useful for others, or should I keep my big ideas to myself?  7  06:49, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Feasible?  7  02:20, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Everything is feasible if you spend the time on it. I don't have time to work on popups myself, but everyone can, changes can be proposed on it's talk page and "editprotected" requests can be made to any script. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:39, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

lastfm.js

Hello DJ, I added to my User:Yug/monobook.js the code

importScript('User:TheDJ/lastfm.js')

I get the error message "sorry, not enough content to play this station". Can you explain a bit what your code do, and does this need an account on Lastfm or something else ? Yug (talk) 16:52, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

The bug reappeared when I was editing Egyptian Revolution of 2011. Very ! Freaky ! It's seems to be relate to Chrome, lastfm.js, and the edition of Mediawiki... It's when editing a page, but not systematic. Just some times. However, the risk is hight, about 1 out of 4~5 edits, and the bugging page forbidden access to the save/revert button, which make the clean up difficult. So I encourage you to state in User:TheDJ/lastfm.js that this js code is 'dangerous' for Chrome users.
Secondly, all my apologizes for the bug on your talkpage. Yug (talk) 06:06, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Seriously man, breathe. Some of your comments about the upgrade on VPT are making you seem like a total dick (which I absolutely don't think you are). I completely understand your frustration; personally, I think sometimes people are far too quick to complain (especially when the site is provided for free, but some people will just bitch no matter what), and the Internet's tendency for comments to become excessively grand ("oh man, this mundane change is the WORST EVAR!!!11!!!one!!") certainly doesn't help, but take a deep breath and don't let it get to you.

If you're getting worked up over someone's flippant (and to be honest, pretty ignorant) comment about stuff, take a step away and do something non-Wikipedia-related. EVula // talk // // 21:49, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

Valued Contributor Award
You have been identified as a valued contributor and your efforts are appreciated. We are honored to present you with the Valued Contributor Award and we thank you for donating your time, expertise and effort to Wikipedia. Keep up the good work. Thanks. (more details)

There are many, many people (myself included) that are extremely grateful you are here. I'm sure you know this, I just wanted to point it out, we are very thankful for all your efforts and for busting your ass with the upgade and all the fixes.

I also wanted to apologize for all the insensitive people that keep complaining. They do this out of ignorance, not knowing all the bugfixes and updates that are in the new release. They see some petty issue and raise a big stink about it. I wish people were a bit more aware of the big picture, unfortunately they are not. So I wanted to say sorry for all the crap you've had to deal with.

I wish I could express how much I value all your countless hours of help. I'll put it like this; If I could pay you $100,000/year, I would. And I'd still be getting a bargain. So thank you. I, and many others, all appreciate everything you do. Thanks. - Hydroxonium (H3O+) 06:12, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Could you please take a look at this bug? I have a feeling that this might be related to the other SVG problems that were pointed out at the Commons. (However, it's entirely possible that it is something else entirely.) Lupo 21:18, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

That bug requires the powers of a sysadmin, I'm just a developer. I already tried pointing it out multiple times, but people are rather busy. I'm not so sure it's related to the SVG issues though. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 12:32, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
That's a 12(!) MB SVG file... 99% of which is made up of a really large, BASE64 encoded PNG file. I suspect that's the reason Mediawiki chokes on it. It displays fine, but trying to view the source even hangs Chrome for 10 minutes. Edokter (talk) — 20:17, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
I tried to delete it using the API, but that runs into the same problem. Annoying. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:59, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
What is really strange is that even including only a link to that image (in the form [[:File:Puerto_Rico_ecosystems_map-fr.svg]], so no display of this SVG), hangs MediaWiki. It would be understandable if MediaWiki had problems displaying this file; but that it chokes already on just referencing its description page is really bizarre. Furthermore, there is a second file; [[:File:Puerto_Rico_ecosystems_map-en.svg]], which has the same size and structure (it's also a 12MB SVG with a huge embedded PNG), that does not exhibit this problem: including a link to the "...-en.svg" file does not hang MediaWiki. Lupo 09:10, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
When I get home, i'll try uploading the file to my local dev installation, and then I can check the debug to see what is going on. Probably the new parser is totally puking on it, causing the metadata to never get set. (which probably indicates that the failure of such isn't being properly cached). —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:02, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

New Courier font in edit mode

Hi DJ, as you've been addressing some of the issues on the PUMP, would you mind taking a look (if and when you have time) at the thread about the Courier font having appeared in edit mode? It's not so easy to edit with, and it's causing some distortions with symbols. Any advice about how to get our old fonts back in edit mode would be much appreciated. Hey there,

I would like some images of mine removed from Wikipedia/Wikimedia; I don't want to be associated with them, and they sometimes come up when my name is Googled. MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css

Hi TheDJ

Since you're the one who created MediaWiki:Common.css/WinFixes.css, perhaps you can help: There are still lots of templates out there that continue using explicit font definitions, just like {{IPA}}, {{polytonic}} and {{Unicode}} used to do before you created WinFixes.css. It would be great if all explicit font definitions were concentrated in WinFixes.css so the explicit font definitions would no longer affect users with a capable browser.

Some of the templates that continue using explicit font definitions include: {{script/Hebrew}} (which already assigns an unused class="script-hebrew"), {{lang-he-n}}, {{lang-he}}, {{script/Gaelic}}, {{script/Cuneiform}}, {{script/Runic}}, {{script/Coptic}}, {{script/Phoenician}}, {{script/Slavonic}}, {{okina}}.

If you don't have the time for fixing these templates and WinFixes.css, perhaps you know of another administrator whom I could address about this? Thanks anyway! -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 08:08, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

I don't have the time, nor do I know who else can do this. In general however, I would point out that centralized CSS is preserved to the most commonly used elements, since they are distributed to ALL users, as opposed to templated css which is only distributed to the people who read the pages on which the templates are used. Thanks anyway! Of course, WinFixes.css is not distributed to all users, whereas it is really all users that are affected by font definitions in templates. I don't know for sure, but I doubt that {{polytonic}} is more commonly used than, say, the Hebrew script with its various templates or {{okina}}. -- machᵗᵃˡᵏ👍 06:37, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

The help desk needs a scripting expert

The Help desk team are trying to put together an edit notice for the main Help Desk page. Ordinary editors, with or without JavaScript enabled, must be shown the existing edit notice, but the help desk volunteers would like to see something like this version instead, with a collapsed table of the common response templates.

May we enlist your expertise in this? The discussion thread is here, and the VPT thread it mentions has been archived here. You are welcome to play in my sandbox.

Ombox fix on Meta?

The ombox template family on Meta isn't rendering properly. Can you tell why? Are the ombox css styles applied only to en:wp / must be added to each new site? Thanks, SJ+ 19:44, 18 April 2011 (UTC)

Correct, the mbox family is a set of English Wikipedia templates and styling. So you need to copy both the template, as well as the mbox styles from MediaWiki:Common.css. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 07:56, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

Upgrade needed on nlwiki for GoogleTrans gadget

Hi TheDJ,

I've had to upgrade GoogleTrans to support IE9 (adding 'px' to pixel length and widths!). I haven't been able to do this on the nlwiki since BarkingFish, who owns the gadget file, doesn't seem to sign on anymore.

Could you please upgrade the code for GoogleTrans on the nlwiki? The gadget file is

nl:User:BarkingFish/googleTrans.js

The code to replace it with is at:

nl:User:Endo999/GoogleTrans.js

Thanks Very Much.

Endo999 (talk) 17:01, 30 April 2011 (UTC)

PS. I've just put a translate next sentence? command in the enwiki GoogleTrans gadget. When you select > 1 word this command appears in the popup and will

1) select next sentence
2) translate this sentence in the popup.

Communication idea

Hi, I made a suggestion in a VPT discussion you were involved in; I wondered if you had any thoughts on that:

what if some developer(s) contributed just a little to the Signpost on a (semi)regular basis describing some of the trials and tribulations of what they're currently developing? One of the big problems in this area is lack of communication. If the community better understood what is involved and how hard it is, that would help, I think. Plus the Signpost has a feedback section - I'm sure you'd get encouragement/praise as well.

I did previously try something in that direction with WP:DEVMEMO, but that didn't work out. Perhaps something smaller and more informal, fitting into an existing process, might work? If you think the idea has legs, do you have any thoughts on how to organise it? Rd232 talk 22:47, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

It is a good idea. I actually regularly wrote the tech section of the signpost in the past myself. Unfortunately I now have a new job, and my Wikipedia time is very limited and I spend a maximum of 6 hours a week on development for MediaWiki. I guess a small series of interviews might be a nice idea. Like once a month with different developers. Please suggest to User:HaeB. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:53, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
That could work. I've left a note. Thanks. Rd232 talk 23:08, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
(Origins: all participating partners didn't really have proposed space stations, just modules really, and reading the referenced consolidated launch manifest didn't really change my mind on that one.) (undo)
(i disagree. They were proposed space stations. Granted, not well developed plans, but still proposed. Might need a ref though.) (undo)

Hello Derk-Jan, How are you ? I expect you are busy in real life, cool. I was thinking at some point in the future, of updating the paragraph in the Origin section of the ISS page, and I was after your help in that matter, you see, I've done a lot of research in the past and I haven't ever heard of a canadian space station, or the Japanese Kibo laboratory being part of a space station program, and the European columbus I'm honestly not too sure about, I've never heard of it being a space station program, but I haven't studied it's origin very much that I can recall, just their current and future plans.

The current paragraph reads like this

According to the plan, the International Space Station programme would combine the proposed space stations of all participant agencies: NASA's Freedom, the RSA's Mir-2 (with DOS-8 later becoming Zvezda), ESA's Columbus, and the Japanese Kibō laboratory.[citation needed] When the first module, Zarya, was launched in 1998, the station was expected to be completed by 2003. Delays have led to a revised estimated completion date of 2011.

Do you know where I might find info on space station programs for those 3 partners ? the other 2, Russia and America, I've quite familiar with. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Penyulap (talkcontribs) 22:03, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

The canadians never intended to make their own station, but the Europeans and Japanese sure did. Perhaps not really reliable sources; but: http://www.astronautix.com/craft/colation.htm http://www.russianspaceweb.com/columbus.html but the images there show you that there definetly were concepts. The same for the Japanese space station, but since it is already almost impossible to find references for the current kibo module, those may be harder to find (Japanese don't publish so much and what they publish is often in japanese, not in english). Good luck with your search. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:14, 6 June 2011 (UTC)
WOW !!! I'm freaking out here, this is amazing ! Those references for the Columbus space station are incredible, and the best lead I have ever seen. They are two of my favorite sites too, so I feel like a complete idiot really. You were right and I was wrong. I have been flat out on the article page lately getting a big push for new material from 15 wikiprojects and I had overlooked your usertalkpage, and now that I'm taking a break I'm just catching up.
Another editor who has been carefully watching some of my messages has updated the lead already, it's still not up to your standards, but it'll do fine for now, I'll immediately research further about the Japanese module's history, so it will be ready to fix up and reference when I'm back. Japanese is a snap for me, all foreign languages are, it's very easy to use google language tools to translate those pages for you. So as we agree it needs references I'll fix the lead first thing when I return. The Japanese embassy on Wikipedia and Nihonjoe have been of great help as well. Penyulap talk 09:47, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Today's code changes

Hello! It appears that one of today's code changes (most likely at Template:Sec link auto) somehow caused external link icons to appear at Template:Wikipedia languages. I inserted the "plainlinks" class as a quick fix, but I assume that other pages are similarly affected. Thanks! —David Levy 19:17, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Yes, an unintended consequence indeed. I'll see if I can fix it, but with the new secure setup, we can't detect in templates anymore if someone is on the secure server and this template has behavior that relies (for styling only) on being able to know that. Might not be fixable... —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:33, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Ernestina Herrera de Noble.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Ernestina Herrera de Noble.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. George Ho (talk) 22:46, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for uploading File:Ernestina Herrera de Noble.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright and licensing status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can verify that it has an acceptable license status and a verifiable source. Please add this information by editing the image description page. You may refer to the image use policy to learn what files you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. The page on copyright tags may help you to find the correct tag to use for your file. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please also check any other files you may have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads.

Template protected

I noticed you protected Template:Fix/category. It has been vandalised only by IP users so perhaps semi-protection would have been enough. I always feel offended when templates I created get protected, and I myself can't edit them any more. :) Debresser (talk) 22:03, 17 January 2012 (UTC)

All other Fix/ templates are fully protected as well, so that is why I went with that choice. The parent template is used on over 300000 pages (likely significantly more), thus changing this one can have huge effects (both in vandalism exposure but also in putting unnecessary burden on the servers). If you feel it is unwarranted, I ask you to open a discussion at WP:RFPU. If you really are frustrated about not being able to edit the template, I can advise you to try for administrator status, or alternatively campaign for a more tiered permissions system in which we can make a distinction between experienced/trusted editors and those who have been around for a week. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:54, 17 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I am really frustrated by that, yes. I often edit templates, and am seriously hindered by protected ones. But I am pretty sure I won't make it to admin. Edittop Gadget & RTL

Hi, we want to use the Gadget, MediaWiki:Gadget-edittop.js, in our wiki. But there is a problem with it, our language is RTL and the Edit link will be showed at the right of the page, beside the article title. Could you please assist us with this problem? Regards ●Mehran Debate06:22, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

I'll take a look. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:05, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
Hmm, a little bit more difficult than I thought because of https://fa.wikipedia.org/wiki/مدیاویکی:Vector.jsTheDJ (talkcontribs) 14:51, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
We currently use this gadget to edit the top section. It adds a "0" button near the "Move" button. But that's not very necessary, forget about that if you see it's too difficult and time-consuming. Thanks ●Mehran Debate18:27, 5 February 2012 (UTC)
It's not impossible, it will just require more work than I had anticipated. And I don't have time available right this instant, but I'll keep it on my radar. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:44, 6 February 2012 (UTC)
many thanks :) ●Mehran Debate07:31, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear TheDJ,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at [email protected] (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at [email protected]. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

WikiSnaps

Hi!

How do I get WikiSnaps into my iPhone?

Best regards, Tanzania (talk) 17:17, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. That way we can have a real MOTD in the future rather than re-using (This space for rent). Any help would be appreciated! ·Add§hore· Talk To Me! 14:09, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

Documentation for gadget authors

I saw you had done some work on heavily-used gadgets. We're trying to start a library for gadget authors to use. Please check it out and post any questions or comments there. -- MarkAHershberger(talk) 00:57, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

You have been working on Template:Coord/link. Because copy and paste will not work on it, can you give any clue as to how I can incorporate it into another wiki? I have tried to copy a page from wikipedia to the Calendar Wiki, and it uses Template:Coord/link, and I cannot figure out how to get it to work. -- BRG (talk) 15:59, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

User script listing cleanup project

I'm leaving this message for known script authors, recent contributors to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts, and those who've shown interest in user scripts.

This scripts listing page is in dire need of cleanup. To facilitate this, I've created a new draft listing at Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts/Scripts cleanup. You're invited to list scripts you know to be currently working and relevant. Eventually this draft page can replace the current scripts listing.

If you'd like to comment or collaborate on this proposal, see the discussion I started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject User scripts#Scripts listing cleanup project. Thanks! Equazcion (talk) 04:45, 25 Mar 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the notification Equazcion, i have little time to spare atm however, so I don't think i'll be able to participate, but it is good to be aware that some people are on it. ! —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 11:13, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

MathJax review

Since I noticed that you were adding code to the MediaWiki MathJax code and Brion Vibber never responded: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Mathematics/Archive/2012/Mar#mathJax_progress. Nageh (talk) 22:47, 25 March 2012 (UTC)

Great, if you could help with some more tips, that would be wonderful. List of all Math issues. Especially in regard to how to make macros and other stuff for some of those mentioned missed operations and stuff, that would totally help ! —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:04, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Quick review:

  1. In wiki2jax.js, "\displaystyle" does not need curly braces as it does not take a parameter.
    1. Will fix.
      1. in review.
  2. In ext.math.mathjax.enabler.js, the function call to TEX.Parse.Augment() can be removed in its entirety as MathJax 2.0 includes support for specifying the line spacing in newlines.
    1. The default of that new support, is that proper for us ?
      1. This call was already removed over that past couple of weeks.
  3. I assume you have uploaded also the output HTML-CSS jax's STIX font directory. In that case you should include "STIX" as one of the "availableFonts".
    1. I'm not sure if this was done yet. We didn't import the fonts because they were 120Mb, but that probably means they are not installed on anything but perhaps brion's machine I presume.
  4. In texvc.js, quick-and-dirty support for color is not needed anymore as MathJax 2.0 includes an extension for the color command. See this diff.
  5. In TeX-AMS-texvc_HTML.js, if you remove the hackish color support from above, you must include "color.js" as one of the preloaded "TeX" extensions since otherwise the \color macro will be interpreted wrongly (MathJax 1.0-style instead of TeX-style). Also, you must include "cancel.js", which will not be loaded automatically.
    1. Color already removed, cancel is on my todo list for today. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 18:37, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Ad 2.: The call to TEX.Parse.Augment() was copied over from my sources. I have implemented this back for MathJax version 1.1, which did not include support for newline options. Version 2.0 does, so this hack is not needed anymore.
Ad 3: Only the PNG image font takes that much memory, the STIX fonts is just a package of 2.5 MB. But you are confusing the actual fonts with the support for it, which I'm pretty sure Brian has uploaded (I have omitted them only because of the inconvenience of uploading large numbers of files as a user).
For a few of the missing symbols (if anyone really needs them): diff.
Nageh (talk) 18:47, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Added a couple more of the missing symbols. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:22, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. Here is a bit more. Nageh (talk) 00:04, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
And a near-perfect implementation of \oiint and a better one of \oiiint: diff. Works correctly with display and inline maths, and with HTML-CSS and MathML output. Nageh (talk) 15:29, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Also, can't we discuss MathJax issues on a Wiki page rather than on Bugzilla, I'm so sick of creating a zillion accounts. Nageh (talk) 18:54, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Well bugzilla is where code is discussed unfortunately. So it's the only place where developers usually look in their day to day flow. You can't focus on everything :D —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:05, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Also, if people would actually read my User talk:Nageh/mathJax pages we could avoid some of the bug reports, e.g., 35186, 35190, and 35188. Regarding 35481, you could redefine macros that you wouldn't want. Nageh (talk) 19:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Can you explain what arcsec: ['NamedOp',0], actually does ? I'm trying to catch up with the MathJax way, but these are parts that don't seem to be well documented I think. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 19:14, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
It defines a macro called 'arcsec' that gets implemented as a call to the function 'NamedOp' (defined in jax/input/jax.js) and takes 0 arguments. Nageh (talk) 19:32, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Ah, it basically means, "treat this as an operation with the exact same name and print that name in text". Got it. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:01, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Eventually did these with NamedFn, because it was in line with similar functions in the 2.0 jax.js —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Did you/Brian confirm that you can now override commands defined in one of the AMS extensions? If not, the code commented out in [1] did consider exactly that. Nageh (talk) 19:39, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Davide on matchjax-users says that code doesn't actually work; not sure what the proper fix is atm. --brion (talk) 19:58, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Well, it sure works for me. Maybe you can check with my script: User:Nageh/mathJax.js (it's the StartupHook call). Nageh (talk) 20:37, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
I read up Davide's comments on the user mailing list. If the issue with the code is due to bad timing of the "End Extensions" hook simply select another one. I'm pretty much at loss though why Davide claims the code does not do what it is intended to do. It works in my setup because the AMS extensions are loaded in advance. Simply implement another hook and run the code, then it should also work in your setup (and for IE). Nageh (talk) 22:25, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

If you still want to support user-defined macros you should not remove support for it (the one line with userConfig): [2]. Nageh (talk) 19:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Symbols

I note that the added symbols have a considerable different style than most math symbols, because they don't get the AMS styling... Would you happen to have any ideas for that ? P.S. you added \digamma to your version, but that one is actually in AMS already, it was only the \Digamma that was not present. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:48, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

They look pretty normal to me, and they are supported both by the TeX and the STIX fonts. Can you clarify how the symbols are supposed to look? (Thanks for pointing out the duplicate \digamma, btw.) Nageh (talk) 21:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
They are smaller for instance. It's because they get this styling: font-family: STIXGeneral, 'Arial Unicode MS', serif; font-size: 85%; font-style: italic; font-weight: normal;, whereas AMS symbols only get font-family: MathJax_AMS;TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:13, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Ok, I see what's going on. The problem is that while the symbols are supported in the Math and AMS fonts they are not supported by the MathJax HTML/CSS output jax code. Basically, this means that we need to kindly ask Davide from the MathJax crew to add support for these symbols if we do not want to painfully add the glyph outlines ourselves. Nageh (talk) 22:19, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Done for the day now, but more to come... —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 22:30, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

hi.

i already reported the issue in User talk:Amalthea#‎Mediawiki:Gadget-popups.js bug, but unfortunately he/she seems a bit too busy and did not have time to look at it yet, so i'm asking you.

the bug itself is very obvious once you look at the code. the issue is that function removeTitle() destroys the value of a.title just before copying it to a.originalTitle, which is clearly wrong - we should copy first and nuke later. this is somewhat important, specifically because of other gadgets (e.g. cat-a-lot) that rely on title - we can train them to use "originalTitle" instead, but only if it actually have the correct value. this bug also screws up the operation of the functions restoreTitle() and removeTooltip(). the fix is very simple.

peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 14:58, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Not perfect yet, still seems to loose the title if you mouse in and out and in again before the popup timer elapses, but it should be quite a bit better. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:27, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! tha was fast... peace - קיפודנחש (talk) 18:07, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

mathJax update

FYI – Summary of recent updates: diff. Includes improved \oiint and \oiiint support, support for \textsf and \texttt (\emph is a text mode command and should not be supported, IMO), support for \vline (works perfectly in HTML-CSS output mode), noErrors.js extension has been removed (no idea why I had included it in the first place), and support for the RGB color model (so \definecolor does not fail anymore). Nageh (talk) 17:01, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for the update notification. I've not had time to spend in the past 2 weeks, but I hope I can forward this a bit again this week. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 17:06, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Keep up the good work! I've hatted a piece of sourcecode that caused horizontal scrollbars to appear; I hope you don't mind.

Edit Top Gadget

Due to a change in how we're handling page icons, we're about to start using your Edit Top script as a Gadget on our site, but it looks like our community would prefer that the [edit] link be to the left of any page icons rather than on the outside edge of the page. Is this something you can do easily? I'm certainly willing to look at it myself, but my DOM and Javascript skills are next to nil, so I'd probably struggle with it for some time before getting it. Thanks either way! RobinHood70 talk 01:05, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Never mind, I got it. Thanks for reading, anyway. :) RobinHood70 talk 04:13, 4 May 2012 (UTC)
