Timee Hanna
[edit]Timee Hanna was a leading figure in the Down GAA movement. He sought to bring about equality within the sport and encouraged children to get involved from a young age. He was a hot prospect for the county team as a minor but after staving his thumb he was out of action for 3 years. "Tim" as his friends call him returned to county action a month after fully recovering from injury when they beat donegal in the ulster final in 1992.
However three days before the eagerly anticipated All-Ireland final with Dublin, the recovered Hanna suffered another setback, he cut his gum on a toblerone bar and was sidelined for the net two seasons. Hanna made had his swan song in the newly refurbished Páirc Esler in Newry, Co. Down where his club team met local rivals Castlewellan in the county final.
Hanna started the game from the bench wearing the number 31 shirt. Bryansford made a bright start to the contest leading by 7 points at half time. But an inspired substitution by Castlewellan manager A.P. Hanna led to the scores being tied with just 5 minutes to go. A.P. sent in the young starlet Patrick Zhupadthy Malone who was making quite a name for himself with the county minors, with a tally to challenge even the mighty "Supermac" Mc Comiskey. Malone score 2 points from the tightest of angles, only before seen in the glory days of Castlewellan football.
As Conor Maginn fell injured in the area, winning a penaly, and broke his wing mirror in the process, the ford faithful began to chant Hanna's name. Bryansford manager Kevin Durkin had no hesitation to put hanna in the fray as they trailed by 2 points. It was hanna to hit the penalty and as he stared into the whites of keeper Paddy Rooney's eyes. Hanna stepped up and as he struck the ball, slipped and the ball didnt even reach the net, the keeper psyched him out.
Castlewellan went on to win the county championship and went even further being the only club team to lift Sam Maguire. Rooney and Malone were true GAA heroes while Maginn and Hanna weren't to show their faces in newcastle again. It is believed they are in hiding somewhere in Belfast.
