Expanded infobox template: {{Infobox church/sandbox}}

Hi, you took part in the discussion at "Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 February 21#Template:Infobox churches and cathedrals" where it was proposed that the templates {{Infobox church}}, {{Infobox churches and cathedrals}} and {{Parish church}} be merged. I've created a prototype merged template for discussion at {{Infobox church/sandbox}}. The documentation for the template is at Template:Infobox church/doc. Your comments and help with improving the template are welcome – please discuss the matter at the Infobox church talk page.

If everyone is happy with {{Infobox church/sandbox}}, then {{Infobox church}} can be replaced with that template and the templates {{Infobox churches and cathedrals}} and {{Parish church}} nominated for deletion. — Cheers, JackLee talk 13:46, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Why I add only in Turkey article

The reason that I add the only right beside the CIA, when it comes to classify Turkey as developed is because ONLY the CIA classifies Turkey as developed. By the way the same agency doesnt classify Turkey as an advanced economy. Who knows what the real meaning is. Of course NO other major organization i.e. World Bank, IMF, UN, OECD classifies Turkey as a developed country. Turkey has a GDP per capita of around $9,000 and an medium HDI, around 82nd in the world, behind countries like Albania, Colombia or Uruguay. Also it has a relatively high infant mortality and low life expectancy. In essense I dont think that with those stats a country could be classified as a developed other than what the CIA says. So that is why I stress it. That ONLY the CIA classifies it so.Hope that helps.Aee1980 (talk) 02:03, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I couldn't help but notice the edit war going on. I'd just like to point out that the CIA lists Turkey as "developing"[1] (in the big list right below), and further, says about the "developed" countries: "note - similar to the new International Monetary Fund (IMF) term "advanced economies" that adds Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan but drops Malta, Mexico, South Africa, and Turkey'"
So instead of adding "only", or changing it to say they're listed as a "developing" country, I just removed it altogether. Krawndawg (talk) 06:09, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
The CIA lists Turkey and South Africa both as "developed" and "developing" 151.57.199.32 (talk) 06:30, 29 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I noticed that. Point is that if we're going to go out of our way to point out that the CIA lists it as developed, we would have to go out of our way to point out that it's also listed as developing, which seems kind of silly. Better to just not mention it at all. Krawndawg (talk) 06:35, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Tomb of Peter in Jerusalem

I have added a "Tomb of St Peter in Jerusalem" subheading and section to the St Peter's tomb article, also adding citations supporting the fact that the ossuaries were discovered by Franciscan Monks, that genuine archaeological excavating and examinations were carried out by Bagatti and Milik, who were experts in the field. It is a matter of personal conjecture where St Peter was really buried, and people should be allowed to make up their own minds without the interference of censorship. I personally do not hold an opinion on the matter. There was no justification to delete the paragraph relating to the tomb of Peter in Jerusalem. The issue has nothing to do with "atheism" or "ignorance" as suggested. Wfgh66 (talk) 16:32, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Monroe, NH

Hi Student7 -- I'm going through the New Hampshire towns, cleaning up a minor mess left by the Smackbot: it updated the geographic references in just about every town but didn't check to see whether a References or Footnotes section existed. So in checking up on each town, I standardized the reference format. If that bothers you for Monroe, I don't have a problem with you changing it back to what works better for you. The article is certainly much better documented than 95% of the other towns' articles in the state. Best wishes, --Ken Gallager (talk) 15:39, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

What valdalism is not

Hi, regarding this edit. Please read WP:Vandalism, which is very specific about what is and isn't vandalism. That edit couldn't possibly be considered vandalism. Note that those figures that you reverted back to were not supported by any source. They were made up, ie. original research, which is not allowed on wikipedia. The new figures (that you called vandalism) are official, sourced figures by the IMF. Krawndawg (talk) 11:55, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for doing most of today's cleanup on the OG article -- you just did what I was just now about to do, putting the focus back on the Group itself rather than criticism (without dumping the criticism), re-ordering & cleaning up the MRA & Buchman content. Re: Third party

I'm not an administrator, so I could do anything like that myself. Policy doesn't actually forbid moving without discussion (in fact, it falls under WP:BOLD), and I don't know what policies or guidelines say about titles. If a consensus has already been reached, moving can be considered page-move vandalism, but this appears to be a new instance. I'd go with what you've done already- post at WP:RM and notify the other user that you've done so. You can then apply what is decided there to other articles with honorifics. If there is more moving after consensus, it can simply be moved back- when a page is moved, it leaves a redirect under the old name. If this redirect isn't edited at all, the page can be moved back (this is called a move-over-redirect). If it keeps getting moved back and forth, request for it to be move protected at WP:RPP. Just be sure that the requested move finishes first, so somebody doesn't think you're a vandal. JeremyMcCracken (talk) (contribs) 15:15, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Yes WP:RPP is the place to make the request for move protection. Jeremy has covered it here better than I could. --Finngall talk 21:08, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Communism

Apologies! It was meant to say "today in the present" but I guess I am silly becuase I could have wrote "present-day". I have a habit of misspelling. Moving articles

Hello Student7, I am sorry for moving some articles created by me.You may please note that I only moved articles created by me .I moved those articles just because some people tried to redirect those articles to some other articles which did not provide all information. For eg.One person told me that he would merge the articles 'Malankara( Indian) Orthodox Syrian Church' and 'Jacobite Syrian church' just because of the reason that it was mentioned somewhere in the Jacobite article that the church was also known as Syrian Orthodox church.Everyone knows that both the Jacobite Syrian Church and the Indian Orthodox Church are two autocephalous Oriental Orthodox Churches. Thus I was forced to rename it to Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Church. Very new at this, but in response to your comments:

  • religion certainly is relevent, the wiccans and pagans do not want to be counted, they fall into the 24% that said "none"

will try to find cites, there was an article in the Times-Argus about wiccans about 7 or 8 years ago

Friends moved into Vermont about two minutes after they got off the boats. The fanatical Puritans were too much for them. The Pilgrims were tolerant, but Puritans were not. and if the Friends hadnt planted all those sugar maples along the roads, where would we be now? handed out seedlings in fact, went door to door doing it. Or just plain did planted them, and went back one dry summer and watered them too. The Friends were/are really really really against slavery.

Again, will try to get cites, other than our own literture, so you know it wont be biased

James, son of Zebedee

Hi, Student7. I just wanted to communicate with you about my reason for making the edit I did to James, son of Zebedee. If you will look at WP:EL, you will notice that we are not supposed to link to commercial sites. In Wikipedia, "Footnotes add material that explains a point in greater detail, but that would be distracting if included in the main text. Footnotes are also used to cite sources" (WP:Footnotes). I know that there was some useful information on that page, but a link to a commercial Website selling a picture of the subject violates WP:EL, and that's why I removed it. It appears that you are wanting to provide a cite proving the date of the saint's feast day. I'm not certain that it's the sort of thing that really requires citation. According to WP:Citing sources, a citation is needed (1) When adding material that is challenged or likely to be challenged, (2) When quoting someone, (3) When adding material to the biography of a living person, (4) When checking content added by others, and (5) When uploading an image. The date on which a saint's feast day is celebrated really doesn't seem to meet any of these criteria. However, if you would like to place a footnote there, you might want to do a Websearch for "Catholic saints" or something like that to find a non-commercial page that gives the information you are wanting to cite. Thanks for all your work on Wikipedia. Sincerely, MishaPan (talk) 16:46, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Satellite High School

You recently edited my Satellite High School page. I'm a little puzzled why you deleted the President Bill Clinton quote about Bailey. You don't believe that it's notable? The quote is straight from the Preseident's archives. Also, you deleted all of the departments and the department heads. You honestly think that isn't notable as well? If someone were to come across the Satellite High School page here on wikipedia, isn't that something that would be relevant? I'm just a little dissapointed, for years there wasn't a Satellite HS page on wikipedia.org. The day after I create one and spend over six hours on it, a lot of content was deleted from the page. I know you're just doing your job, I'm just not sure why the departments section was deleted. If you could elaborate more on what you think then I would appreciate it. Namesake Succession Boxes

I have gone to the liberty to request a deletion for your namesake succession box series. I am not quite sure how I found them, but unfortunately they do not qualify as succession boxes since they are not in fact a part of any real succession. What I recommend you do is create Infoboxes for these sort of lists, that way every city/town/etc will have the complete list of other locations with the same name. I believe that was your original intent. I apologize for the deletion requests and if there is anything I can do to help with creating the infoboxes, I would be happy to assist.

Well, I didn't know that some people had vested interests in this article. I just edited it because I believe lead paragraphs should be short (as mentioned in some policy guideline which I can't be bothered to find), and the grammar of the first sentence was so convoluted that it took a few minutes before I understood it. 78.86.9.206 (talk) 15:07, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Notables

What I've seen is that people without articles aren't considered good enough for articles, unless they undoubtedly fulfill notability criteria. Since founding a community doesn't necessarily make a person notable (unlike being a professional sportsperson or a legislator), if there's no article, the person shouldn't be listed. It doesn't matter where in the country s/he is from. Nyttend (talk) 12:30, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Request to move article H.H. Moran Mar Baselios Geevarghese I incomplete

You recently filed a request at Wikipedia:Requested moves to move the page H.H. As a result, it has been moved to the incomplete and contested proposals section. Requests that remain incomplete after five days will be removed.

Please make sure you have completed all three of the following:

  1. Added {{move|NewName}} at the top of the talk page of the page you want moved, replacing "NewName" with the new name for the article. This creates the required template for you there.
  2. Added {{subst:RMtalk|NewName|reason for move}} to the bottom of the talk page of the page you want to be moved, to automatically create a discussion section there.
  3. Added {{subst:RMlink|PageName|NewName|reason for move}} to the top of today's section here.

If you need any further guidance, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves or contact me on my talk page. - JPG-GR (talk) 02:52, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

Origen

Student7 I do not understand you. Would you please fix it for me. I do the best I can. I took it for granite (no spell checker) the reader would know "Contra Celsus" by Origen presented Celsus' charges. I think people should know what Celsus said. The Dodds thing was an attempt to show how "magically irrational" the Greeks were. So you could understand Celsus. You can see this again (my last entries) when I brought up the Christian persecution as the blame for the Antonine Plague. [After the plague books were destroyed and higher learning became suspect. Books were dangerous they contained magic and sorcery.(And most likely some of them did). But to those frightened uneducated people, Christian and Pagan alike, you just destroyed books and those who read them. People who read and studied books were not to be trusted]. (This still goes on today) If you "can see where this is going" you are doing a lot better than I am. I think it is important to explain things as best you can.Kazuba (talk) 03:51, 2 August 2008 (UTC)

Ran across a summary that was done in Journal of Mississippi History, August 1977 by Haight and Burns (no not that one!  :). It claims 425 total generals. 20% of total generals were killed in action (77). 40 of Field generals (whatever that means) were killed in action. I thought that nearly everybody was on the field in those days. No remote staff.

It claims (slight differences from this article) 8 full generals, 17 lt generals, 72 maj generals and 328 BGs. 125 had been professional soldiers before the war. The largest supply came from former "lawyers, jurists" = 129! Student7 (talk) 01:24, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

There were seven full generals, as John Hood's appointment was temporary and never confirmed (stated in the article), but would bring the total to eight. "Field" refers to line officers, as opposed to staff, men such as Samuel Cooper, who never saw combat and held administrative/war department positions. The source I used for referencing the total no. in each rank is Eichers' Civil War High Commands, and the generals killed info comes from Foote's Civil War: A Narrative third volume. Do you possibly know what Lt. General or any of the Major Generals not included in the lists of your source? What records or methods did they employ in their research? A lot of the Confederacy's official records are long gone, so info at times can be sketchy, but Eichers' work is used quite a lot on the ACW pages here. I have found a few instances of Foote's work using inaccurate data, but never used it if I knew. Perhaps more eyes on this are needed. Kresock (talk) 02:33, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Third Opinion on Saladin

Hi there, I saw a filing requesting a third opinion for the Saladin article. I left a note on the article's Talk Page to that effect. Hope this helps! Regards, Lazulilasher (talk) 00:51, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Well, actually I don't have a passion, but thanks (I think). I just happened to stumble on that article. The difference between that editor and myself is that I am not copying (savoring) his remarks on my page! Sorry, but I find that creepy. 13:08, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Bennington Triangle

204.167.92.26 (talk) has been deleting a bunch of stuff related to the Bennington Triangle; as I don't know much about it, and as most of what was removed was unsourced, all I've done is restore links to the Triangle to some See also sections. I've never heard of this idea before; can you check into it a bit? Nyttend (talk) 20:51, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I've never even noticed those sections before; with all Vermont communities on my watchlist (which includes over twelve thousand articles) I don't have enough time to read all my watched articles, so I didn't realise that they'd been there without sources for a good while. Thanks for working on it; you didn't miss the point :-) Nyttend (talk) 23:41, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

how do we know what we know

Dear Student7,

I was very interested in your comments on the Habbush Letter article. You ask, how do we know that blogs have not been faked?

It reminded me of something in a library once.... digging out old versions of Mein Kampf, and looking in the index for 'Henry Ford', you would find that in some editions of Mein Kampf, Hitler's praise of Henry Ford was missing, while in other editions, it had been preserved.

Even books, it seems, cannot be fully trusted.

On the other hand, i would trust old paper copies, stored in libraries, more than a website.

On the third hand, is that an issue of the medium on which the information is stored, or is it an issue of the institution that stores that information?

Example: Consider 'Being is Free', the website by Rielle Hunter, the lady that John Edwards cheated on his wife with. archive.org quickly 'blocked' that page, with vague notices to users, that the page wasnt accessible. no reason why, no explanation. just blocked.

Now,old libraries, they store multiple copies of Mein Kampf. . . . who knows all the old stuff lying around in libraries. In attics. In paper. Very hard to fake.

Web pages? Not so hard to fake... unless... the original article gets copied around the web dozens of times.... then it becomes, hard, to alter the original article on your newspaper/blog website, and somehow claim that you havent altered it. . . when there are dozens of other copies sitting around in cyberspace.

Too bad we can't really count on archive.org to preserve these things. Perhaps the library of congress should team up with the NSA, not to spy on people, but to actually preserve the internet for future generations.

I dont know.

Keep on truckin.... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.5.140.145 (talk) 02:59, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia is was in the past tense

Querry: you wrote in Thessaloniki that everything in Wikipedia is in the past tense. At first sight I find that 'rule' illogical, especially since wikipedia is peppered with the present tense. For instance, one phrase in the main article is 'Thessaloniki is Greece's second major economic, industrial, commercial...'. My question is what are the Wikipedia rules for tenses, when to use past, present, future, etc. Thanks. Politis (talk) 13:42, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I will try to find out how printed encyclopedias handle the tense issue. Lake Champlain reverts

Uh...just so you know, the Two Brothers Islands exist (think Young Island aka "Bird Island). And, the Cumberland Head Lighthouse is privately owned. I live on Cumberland Head, and knew the former owners. So, if you have no idea whether something is untrue or not, don't say it is. Oh, and since you think Providence and Stave Islands also are "untrue," you can very simply click the link right above them "Carleton's Prize" and see a very plain and simple reference to the islands. 66.109.49.200 (talk) 17:16, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

  • Four Brothers[1]. This is just one of many references. Feel free to furnish a reference to the "privately owned." I did figure, without researching it, coming from an unregistered editor, that it was probably as valid as the "Coupla Brothers." Student7 (talk) 00:07, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

You could well be correct, that the RfC was necessary. But in the meantime I think it is better to edit him than to either revert or argue. He could get bored, without the 'big fight.' Or he might see that the items that he puts in look quite different after they've been rendered into acceptable English, and start to wonder. If he continues to revert-war, the RfC may have proven needed (if it actually draws comment). But in any event, this is far easier than dealing with nationalist PoV pushing. In the meantime, thank you for your patience. Jd2718 (talk) 03:03, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

Right-to-work

The point is that the National Institute for Labor Relations is the research arm of the National Right-to-Work Committee (you wouldn't know that from the name, would you?). A responsible journalist would have been up front about the source he was citing. The problem isn't that the reader might think the institute in question is pro-union. The problem is the reader might mistake the benign sounding "National Institute for Labor Relations" as an unbiased source. The qualifier enhanced NPOV by letting the reader know the institute is openly anti-union (not a neutral labor relations institute that might study arbitration and look for win-win solutions). At present there are two catholicos in the Orthodox church in India. They differ only in one point ie., on the relation with the Syrian Orthodox Church.

All other materials stated in the article is useless. The is no difference between the two parallel fractions of one church. If u want know more refer to AIR 1995 SC 2001, decision of Supreme Court of India in this matter.

Which other entries for financial companies start off by referring to legislation (created after the company had already been structured and in business)? State Farm? nope. Progressive? nope. GEICO? nope. Bank of America? nope. New York Life maybe? nope. Fidelity Investments? nope. Charles Schwab? uhuh. Etrade? no. Vanguard? nope. Wells Fargo? no.

You guys just make up stuff... Give me a break. GLB doesn't even officially apply to anything but publicly owned companies... Most mutuals and privately owned companies voluntarily comply!

I'm not inclined to disagree with you on the length of the article (which is still burdened with way too many embedded lists), but the prose size is only 40K, which is within the readability guidelines. Kcf06751 was right to remove it based on that, but it's a bit of a gray zone.

There is a handy tool to gauge page length, available at User talk:Dr pda/prosesize.js. It plugs into your monobook.js and adds a couple of extra links to your toolbox (on the Wikipedia sidebar). You might want to add it to your profile; it comes in handy for anything regarding page length, including meeting minimum size requirements for new articles for DYK submissions. Vermont community categorisation

The basis on which I was going was "If, however, the topic article and the similarly named category come to be placed in the same parent category, the fact that the article is a member of this subcategory is not a reason for it to be excluded from the parent category," from the "Topic articles" section of Wikipedia:Categorization and subcategories. I'm not clear on why it's less helpful to remove the county level category: as that page states, it can occasionally be helpful to have duplicate categorisation, both for the above statement and for the reason that virtually all community articles that are placed on county templates nationwide are listed in their county categories: I think it's more helpful to have them included in the county category for consistency alone.

All that being stated: please be aware that I've always been a little confused by the way in which almost every Vermont town has its own category, so I'm fully aware that I might be getting in the way of your doing something quite sensible :-) Nyttend (talk) 16:39, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

About the categorisation: would you like to take the issue to the Village Pump? Since you created these, and we're in the middle of discussing how they work, I don't want to try to rearrange them or to get input without your agreement (or at least your awareness that I'm going to do it), especially as you're already trying to get help. Just one thing to say, otherwise: I've always wondered if most of these town-level categories are too small, as (for example) Glastenbury, Vermont only has three articles, and isn't likely to get many more. Check it out, and make your own choices: remember that I'm not going to try to call for other editors to come to consensus unless you agree :-) Nyttend (talk) 01:54, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

Cities over 100K

I'll get back to you in a bit, once I look into this. With few exceptions — including Vermont cities, as there are so few of them — I don't watch cities larger than about ten thousand people, because they get edited so often that I can't keep up, and because enough other editors work with them that vandalism is easier to fight. Your criticism

Student7, I am an experienced editor. I am familiar with policy, including WP:REVERT. I never add any facts that cannot be referenced. Very often, I do include references the first time. It's very unusual that someone summarily rolls back my contributions on sight. The correct procedure in this case would be to use a {{fact}} tag. The editor who rolled back my hard work, at first claimed that he did not believe there were ever any Native American settlements within the District, and claimed he had never heard of Nacotchtank. I realize it is asking too much for people to take 5 seconds to enter "Nacotchtank" into google. Once references were added, they were again rolled back on grounds that they were not "verified" (ie because they were not hyperlinked). Once the hyperlinks were made available, other pretexts for rolling the information back were quickly found. I am glad that they reconsidered what they were doing. But your criticism of me seems unwarranted, and you are holding me to a higher standard than the project standard, by demanding that I spoonfeed you the references for every single thing I write. Til Eulenspiegel (talk) 12:59, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Bethel, Vermont

I wasn't paying attention and accidentally got into an edit war with an IP about Jessamyn West, who lived in the town for a while. The IP thinks that there should either be a nonstandard header (rather than the WP:CITY ideal of "Notable natives and residents"), because she's not a native or a current resident, or that she should be removed because she's not a resident; I've disagreed, but we've both accidentally gotten into 3RR so I'm definitely not doing anything more on it for a while. Could you look at it and either (1) put it how you think it should be, if you disagree with how it is now, or (2) agree with the current format and let me know? And either way, would you please leave a note on the IP's talk page, telling him/her your opinion on this section? Nyttend (talk) 17:07, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Catholicos of the East

The Page Full Protected for the time being. So no more reversions. Sorry for the troubles caused by the silly arguements --ܠܝܓܘ Liju ലിജു לג"ו (talk) 07:12, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Yes. I said the truth. Anyone can enquire of the reality. The above said people are discussing of churhces, but the article List of Catholicos of the East is of those individals who uses the title Catholicos of the East. Lijujacob is purposely trying to make it a church based article. It has nothing in connection with which denomination or fraction it belong. It is only connected with the persons who uses the title.Further, i like to point out that with a simple example. How can a Catholicos take the name of Baselios Paulose II with out a predecessor with name Baselious Paulose I . For ur kind information, the reality is that there exists two adminstrative parallael fractions in the Orthodox church of India. One call itself Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and other Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church. There were civil disputes for authoirty and power. The matter was heared in the Supreme Court of India and decided in vague in 1995 and is reported in AIR 1995 SC 2001. For clarification and execution of this judgement there are various cases existing in several courts in India today also. As per the Court order, Patrairch of Antioch is the supreme spiritual leader and the Catholicos cum Malankara Metropolitan is the authoritative and temporal leader of the whole of orthodox church in India. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexyalex (talkcontribs) 12:05, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

Criticisms of Marxism

First off, Michael Gove is not a source to be used for anyone interested in a serious, non bias analysis of the economic faults of the Soviet Union or the Classical Socialist States in general. Second, as you will probably not agree with the former after having looked at the litany of quotes on your profile, the criticism used explains nothing for the intelligent, inquiring mind. Simply put, I may easily critique any system of governance or economic system on their actions at some point in its history. For simple examples, most forms of Capitalism in the industrialization periods and before were relatively much worse than the Soviet Union for the environment and the betterment of human beings, not to mention the United States treatment of the Native/African Americans. You must look at what they were attempting to achieve, and if not achieved ask why it failed. This quote is a clear indication that you view Wikipedia not as a place for academic inquiry but for bias propaganda. Either that or you have not thought about it that much and just like to cut and paste, which equally disqualifies you. So, to conclude, I will once again delete this garbage. If you are unable to handle this not being here, then I will simply add onto it with my own input..."However, Michael Goves criticism is highly bias and not nearly relevant to the greater question of why the Soviet Union and other Classical Socialist States failed because...."

DC airports

Hey there. I think you're taking too literal of an approach. The airports should be left as is. They are intrinsically related to DC and are therefore proper under the scope of WP:TOPIC. Further, the article's consensus is that the airports be included, which overrides any other policies or guidelines. Best, epicAdam(talk) 20:16, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

Your edits about airports

You should really consider going to talk pages before you remove things like this. The airports serve the area and as such should still be listed. I am personally going to every article where you seem to have made these edits and i am simply reverting because of the aforementioned reason. if these edits say they are in the city, i have no issue with rewording to say that it serves, but to remove entirely is not in the best practice and should be thoroughly discussed...Cheers!--EmperorofBlackPeopleEverywhere (talk) 20:08, 28 December 2008 (UTC)

It's duplicate and improper categorization. If he's already in Category:People from Orleans County, Vermont, then he doesn't go directly into Category:People from Vermont too, and people are never supposed to be filed directly in a city category — if there isn't a "people from city" category for that place, then one can be created if there are enough people to warrant it, but people don't go directly in the city category as a substitute. Laurel wilt

Can you elaborate a little more on what you're looking for in your edit to the Laurel wilt page? The primary source calls the beetle the "redbay ambrosia beetle." Is the cite problem with piping "redbay ambrosia beetle" to "ambrosia beetle?" I've taken "redbay" out of the link and changed it to read "a fungus transmitted by the invasive redbay ambrosia beetle." Is that better?Athene cunicularia (talk) 21:53, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

Horacio Rivero, Jr.

Today I sent an e-mail to my friend Ad. DeLoach in regard to the SCALANT question. As soon as I hear from him, I'll let you know. Cheers! Tony the Marine (talk) 04:37, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Update - Admiral Rivero was vice chief of naval operations from 1961 to 1968 at the Pentagon. Tony the Marine (talk) 18:26, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
  • World's record? I know. Ad. DeLoach, sent me the following New York Times source on the subject: [5]. He is still looking into it. Tony the Marine (talk) 21:55, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Hey, I placed the information in Melbourne's article (will do so for Palm Bay too later) because the study did not include Titusville. It would be relatively weird to have Titusville included in a statistic when it's not supposed to be in there.  :) Please let me know your thoughts on this. I was looking for a better place to insert the sentence too, so if you've got suggestions, let me know. On a different note... I still think that link is quite disturbing... we're only behind Reno... - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 02:15, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

Union Institute etc.

Are you at all familiar with Union Institute etc.? I was quite confused by it, and if you looked at the edit history you can see that I reverted the recent edits as being rather promotional: in part, it was because I didn't know how to improve what had been there previously. Nyttend (talk) 14:11, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Montpelier

You changed the link just today for the Union Institute etc.: thanks for getting to it, as I didn't realize that anything more needed to be fixed than removing spam. Nyttend (talk) 14:07, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

The removal of information from this article was my fault. I accidentally removed it during one of my recent edits. Thank you for fixing it. --Dromioofephesus (talk) 03:02, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Re: Need more recruits?

I don't have any good suggestions about getting more volunteers for RFCs. I don't even check the RFC list very often myself, although after your kind words, maybe I'll start checking it more. But it's already on the Community portal.

The next time you have an RFC, one technique I have seen used is you might try going through the History list of some pages related to your topic to identify other editors who seem to know what they're doing and who are neutral, and ask them to comment on your RFC.

Chios temperatures

Hi,

the temperatures came from one of the "Official" Chios Web sites - www.chios.gr - however I agree they do look high. Please feel free to revise them.

Mediation for Criticism of the RCC

Mediation has begun for the case Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Criticism of the Roman Catholic Church. Please place Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/Criticism of the Roman Catholic Church on your watchlist and make a brief statement there (on the talk page) to acknowledge this. If you wish to make a very brief statement about the case itself, you may do so at the same time. Thanks much! KillerChihuahua?!? 13:27, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Point Barrow

I have moved the paragraph up that show Point Barrow was occupied about 1,000 years prior to the arrival of any Europeans. It appears to have been inhabited by the Birnirk culture people as a burial mound in the area, Birnirk Site, would indicate and was occupied by the Thule people that came after them. As to there being no people that far north this map shows that the Thule and the Dorset culture both lived much further north than Point Barrow. Eskimo/Inuit were and still are for the most part a marine culture and occupied almost all the costal lands that they could survive from. The few places that they didn't live were in the extreme northen parts of Canada but they were in most places long before the Europeans got there. Point Barrow would have provided them with an excellent point for bowhead whale hunting using a Umiak, a tradition that is still carried on today in Barrow. It would also provide easy access to the sea ice for seal hunting in the winter but I couldnt find anything for that. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather Have a gorilla 21:44, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Count of Free Staters

Reckon that anonymous user is going to see the comment you added in-line at Politics of New Hampshire that we need a count of Free Staters? I put a note on his talk page two days ago and nothing. www.FreeStateProject.org says it's over 660 (I know, that isn't good enough!) and I don't know who else would be counting, nor how they would count except by going back to this same web site. --Spike-from-NH (talk) 14:49, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Business directory

?????

Now I'm a little confused: why the question marks? Nyttend (talk) 04:00, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

I just see this as an outworking of WP:NOT, not a directory #3, which concludes with "Wikipedia is not the yellow pages." Aside from anything else, you didn't add a source for it. Nyttend (talk) 15:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree I did not have a reference which would be pretty lame anyway - probably some .com site. Or several.
I don't agree that it was the yellow pages - the link "summarized" the NN retail places. I was not trying to give them needed publicity but to sketch the local economy, which can be done in small part by summarizing the retail establishments. And all economy reporting tends to be in glimpses. Not easy to describe. No village domestic product statistics, and it would be hard with even that as a reference.
For the record, it was this article that set me off on this line of thinking. I was horrified when I first saw it and was seriously considering an Afd when I realized they had a WikiProject, rules, and everything! Student7 (talk) 15:32, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi!

English speakers pronunce the city of Florence in a certain way, because it is written in a certain way. San Diego is not the case, it is written in Spanish. --Againme (talk) 14:59, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

I see your point, a very good one. Just a tip: Spanish pronunciation of San Diego has been the same since centuries ago. Regards. --Againme (talk) 21:57, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Well, I´m an historian, not a linguist. The thing is that Spanish language is almost completely phonetic in its writing system, and we know that most of the letters´pronunciations haven´t changed since centuries ago. The ones that did change, we know how and more or less when (for example, the ´´x´´ in Mexico is like a ´´j´´ in the rest of the Spanish-speaking world). On the other hand, the words that have changed, did it only in spelling, not in pronunciation. We cannot know how people used to speak in different regions, but we do know what the proper educated pronunciation has been over the last centuries. Greetings. --Againme (talk) 23:15, 17 February 2009 (UTC)

Not sure why the material was deleted in Greenland. I assumed that it was vandalism until I saw this page. I assume you had a reason but don't know what it was. Student7 (talk) 01:29, 18 February 2009 (UTC)

Each country has an alphabetical list of topics located at List of Country-related articles and a hierarchical list of topics located at Topic outline of Country. We try to encourage contributors to place all links to related topics in those articles rather than clutter up the See also section with a random subset of those topics. Climate of Florida

Did you want this fact doubly referenced? It's already referenced in the article below under African dust. Thegreatdr (talk) 03:37, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

It is done. While I agree with you that many wikipedia articles don't have adequate referencing, Climate of Florida has been a GA for a year or two, and would have faced reassessment if important facts were left unreferenced or any tags would have been left on the article. In other words, tagging it forced my hand. Thegreatdr (talk) 18:14, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
I found a line or two that was unreferenced in the body yesterday. Don't worry about it. Everyone has a different idea of what well referenced means. Thegreatdr (talk) 17:03, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Alumni notability

Hello, I see you keep reverting the addition of Joe Gayton as an alumnus on Merritt Island High School. Please keep in mind that notable alumni do not follow the same WP:N guidelines as Wikipedia pages. That is to say, some alumni may be notable without Wikipedia pages. This is an error I once made myself. If you review WP:WPSCH and WP:WPSCH/AG, which are more pertinent for school pages that will give you an idea. Basically, any alumni with a Wikipedia page is inherently notable. If they do not have one, that does not disqualify them from the list. However, it does mean that they must be cited by reliable sources as having some notability and being an alumni of the school. In this specific case, Gayton is clearly listed in Wikipedia for his projects, which I believe demonstrates his notability. If you disagree, perhaps you would be willing to defer to WP:PRESERVE and take your issues to the Talk page where we can try to get others' input. -- Lucas20 (talk) 13:45, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

Philistines

Hi, I see that you rated some of my additions to the Philistine article as vandalism. That wasn't very nice. I only made a few changes who make sence, such as labeling Canaanites as Hamites, not Semites. Arabs, Israelites etc. are Semites, but Canaanites, Egptians(Copts) etc. are Hamites. I also added that both Philistines and Canaanites were uncircumcized, again unlike Ismaelites and Israelites. How is this incorrect? Mhusoy (talk) 21:24, 27 February 2009 (UTC)

Vermont

Thanks for your edit of 21:23, 8 March 2009; it's a definite improvement in the placement of the tax info, and thanks, too, for pointing me to that Guideline.

Regarding your 19:26, 9 March 2009 edit's citation, I suspect a typo: Should "pool" be "poll"? Also, is it really a book, as indicated by the template that you used, with a publication date of March 9, 2009? If, instead, it's a news article, then perhaps you could cite a specific publication in which it appeared, and a link if it is online.

For your 21:37, 8 March 2009 edit to other text, I felt that some compromise was needed. You left the sentence, "There are exemptions" sort of hanging; it's almost tautological to say that a tax law will have exemptions, so I restored some of the more significant inclusions & exclusions that shouldn't require a trip to the Government of Vermont article. I'd welcome your review, though.

Thanks, --LottsoLuck (talk) 08:02, 10 March 2009 (UTC)

Smyrna and Bodrum

Hi S. I saw your edits on Smyrna and Bodrum, two places which are dear to my heart too, although I notice that your range of interests is wider than mine. Both articles still need a boost on solid and knowledgable ground and I must say that your brand of logic of the absurd is not helping for advance in that direction. Please just don't tag and let's keep the articles tidy and the contents serious. There is no logic in the absurd. Cretanforever (talk) 09:49, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Vacaville, CA

Hi. I saw your recent edits to Vacaville, CA and I noted that you agreed with me in that the notable residents (not sure how the section was phrased, but something like that) should be included. citation templates

If you are citing articles in the newspaper (Florida Today), use the {{cite news}} template, rather than the {{cite book}} template. The news template has different fields, and displays differently. Also, if there is a URL, link to it along with the title, and use the accessdate; sometimes it is possible to use the wayback machine to pull up dead URLs, but without a URL it's not possible. St anselm's abbey school revisions

Whether or not the school actually is successful in actually attracting academically gifted young men is certainly up for debate, but given the fact that in numerous places throughout the website (including the school mission) they claim to be an institution for gifted and talented boys, or boys with demonstrated academic achievement, I think it seems pretty clear that that is in fact the demographic that they are targeting. I do agree with you that the school does "attempt" to offer a challenging academic environment, and whether they do or not certainly is up for debate.

My real issue, however, is with the wording you employ in those two sentences. To use the same word in two consecutive sentences (attempt) is sloppy and reads poorly given the nature of wikipedia; the entries in this website are neither prose nor poetry, so the use of repetition is unnecessary and should not be employed. Think of a research paper that one would submit to peers or write in a class - repetition would only be used in a place where it is acceptable to drive home an opinion, otherwise it would be considered poor writing.

Given the facts above, I felt that my revision not only improved the grammar and syntax, but also gave the reader a fuller understanding of the nature of the school. Please respond with your thoughts.

Abby Hemenway's history of _____

Once I clicked the link, I found it obvious that it wasn't spam; however, because the name meant nothing to me, I thought it better to rename the link to something we non-locals could understand. I don't know why I labelled Derby as "Orleans County Historical Society" and the rest as "Local history" or something like that; I've now renamed Derby.

On a somewhat different tack: do you consider Hemenway a reliable source? Or Child's? Nyttend (talk) 13:12, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Cut from Kim

I am surprised by your decision to cut the reference to Italo Calvino's Path to the Nest of Spiders that I added to the entry for Kipling's Kim. It is difficult for me to believe that Calvino is, as you write, of "[p]eripheral interest to this major work" while writers like of Leigh Brackett, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Robert A. Heinlein, Poul Anderson, etc., are worthy of mention. Within world literature Cavlino's importance far surpasses the work of any of these writers, and his reference to Kipling is both clear and consequent for his novel. Perhaps my addition could have been shortened, but I must express my displeasure at its having been cut completely. I ask you to reconsider. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.23.87.63 (talk) 04:56, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
