Welcome to Wikipedia from the Medicine Wikiproject!
Welcome to Wikipedia from Wikiproject Medicine (also known as WPMED).
We're a group of editors who strive to improve the quality of medical articles here on Wikipedia. One of our members has noticed that you are interested in editing medical articles; it's great to have a new interested editor on board. In your wiki-voyages, a few things that may be relevant to editing Wikipedia articles are:
- Thanks for coming aboard! We always appreciate a new editor. Feel free to leave us a message at any time on our talk page. If you are interested in joining the project yourself, there is a participant list where you can sign up. Please leave a message on the WPMED talk page if you have any problems, suggestions, would like review of an article, need suggestions for articles to edit, or would like some collaboration when editing!
- Sourcing of medical and health-related content on Wikipedia is guided by our medical sourcing guidelines, commonly referred to as MEDRS. These guidelines typically requires recent secondary sources to support information; its application is further explained here. Primary sources (case studies, case reports, research studies) are rarely used, especially if the primary sources are produced by the organisation or individual who is promoting a claim.
- Wikipedia is a kingdom full of a wide variety of editors with different interests, skills, and knowledge. We all manage to get along through a lot of discussion that happens under the scenes and through the bold, edit, discuss editing cycle. If you encounter any problems, you can discuss it on an article's talk page or post a message on the WPMED talk page.
Feel free to drop a note on my talk page if you have any problems. I wish you all the best on your wiki voyages! Sydney Poore/FloNight♥♥♥♥ 21:51, 21 November 2014 (UTC) Let me know if I can be of any assistance to you. If you like I can speak to you about the work that I'm doing as a Wikipedian in Residence at Cochrane Collaboration. Sydney Poore/FloNight♥♥♥♥ 22:09, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Excellent comment on the Project Medicine talk page
I appreciate your comment to the Project Medicine talk page about somehow bringing wikipedia med articles to the level of journal publishing. Unfortunately, it is true that most of the active editors do not regularly assess references related to the articles they are reviewing. Instead, it seems to me, other editors primary go through the existing med articles flagging them for not meeting the MEDRS guidelines. My impression is that there are very few active editors who have the skill to read journal articles and reinterpret them, and then get the info into a WP med article. As a matter of fact, I don't remember ever seeing even one edit summary that has described the insertion of such a reference. Of couse such improvements exist-I make them myself. I just don't see other editors doing it. Then we have the problem of an editor referencing original research-but there are ways around that.
Go here to see the types of edits that are being done, in realtime, to articles in Project Medicine. I just reviewed these edits and found no MEDRS references added to any of the articles. A lot of editors revert vandalism (very important) or copyedit. Best Regards,

- (assuming that you're referring to me) I simply made an easily-verifiable change regarding my title, and added a more reliable source for my membership in ASCI. I thought this would be uncontroversial, but I acknowledge that I probably should've just suggested the edits. If there are any concerns about the content, please revert. I have been tempted to make other changes, because aspects of my work that I consider notable are not mentioned, but I recognize the obvious COI and will suggest edits here in future, rather than making them myself - thanks for catching my attention on this point. soupvector (talk) 02:34, 12 October 2015 (UTC)
- Really, when changes are simple and factual, of course you can edit the article: as long as possible CoI is declared, it's absolutely fine. But you're right about the risk of sniping. I loved your WikiConference talk on Wikipedia vs Professional writing, by the way. Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:26, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
- Many thanks Chiswick Chap for your thoughtful note! I am particularly happy to hear you enjoyed that talk - I wish I had more discretionary time to edit. — soupvector (talk) 20:46, 23 February 2016 (UTC)

Hello there,
I'm getting the feeling I should run Featured Picture Candidates by you, first, for your once-over, before nominating them. :)
Do you think you could "Support" this one, at Featured Picture Candidates, if I were to nominate it there?
If it does not meet your standards somehow, please, let me know, beforehand, and I won't, and I'll try to find something else to run by you, instead.
Thank you for your time,

- Let me know your thoughts on this image, please? — Cirt (talk) 17:31, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- It's a nice image, simpler than the others (thus less susceptible to error). The labels are in Latin, which is odd - not even doctors (in the USA, at least) use the Latin "os" or Latin spellings, in general. English labels might be better. If you like, I could edit this. Since I'm new to the process I've just been commenting rather than !voting. soupvector (talk) 17:40, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- What about this one instead (assuming the caption or title would indicate that it's the bones that are labeled)? soupvector (talk) 17:43, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, that's a fine image. Is that something that you can agree would be valuable to have as a Featured Picture on Wikipedia? — Cirt (talk) 17:48, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- I know next to nothing about Featured Image criteria, but I don't see a problem with it. soupvector (talk) 17:54, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Entamoeba histolytica life cycle - asking for your expertise
Asking for your expertise on another medical related image.
This one is a Featured Picture on Commons, at File:Entamoeba histolytica life cycle-en.svg.
It is used on Wikipedia articles: Entamoeba histolytica, Parasitism, and Amoebiasis.
Can you please look it over and see if you can find any fault in it?
Does this meet your standards?
Thank you,
— Cirt (talk) 21:48, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- This is a very nice diagram, with two minor problems that relate to the inner curve (from the step where the Trophozoites divide): for one thing, there are no arrows to indicate which way that curve is flowing (minor problem, as one can guess, but we should not have to guess - and the color gradient on the curve doesn't help that much); secondly, the invasion step ("Trophozoites invade the intestinal mucosa") is pointing to the ascending colon, whereas the "migrate" step (2 steps prior) is pointing to the descending colon - which is confusing since stool passes from the ascending colon to the descending colon, not the other way around. To fix the latter, I think one would need to reverse much of the figure. — soupvector 21:58, 13 October 2015 (UTC)
- Great! Thank you! Glad I'm asking for your expertise, thanks very much! — Cirt (talk) 22:01, 13 October 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, Soupvector, for acting professional and polite with me despite my frustrations over a miscommunication which was likely an error in wording and phraseology on my part.
Once again, I'm sorry about the confusion and I'm glad you're still willing to provide me with quite helpful advice on medical related images. Thank you very much! :) — Cirt (talk) 22:23, 13 October 2015 (UTC) |
Created article - Moveable Feast
Soupvector,
I saw on your userpage you wrote:
"Moveable Feast (I would wiki-link if there were a page for this Baltimore charity)."
So I was inspired and went ahead and researched and wrote and created a new article at -- Moveable Feast.
So now you can wiki-link, if you wish, at your userpage.
Thanks for your inspiration to create an article on this nonprofit,

- That's a great addition! I've added a popular culture reference that I thought might be interesting. — soupvector (talk) 07:58, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
- Excellent, thank you! I came across a lot more secondary sources, but I thought this was a good start for an article. :) — Cirt (talk) 08:01, 26 October 2015 (UTC)
Are the Obstacles Academic?
That was a most excellent talk you gave at WikiConference USA 2015. Do you have a transcription you would be willing to upload so it can be easily referenced as a user essay during Wikipedia discussions? Alternatively, would you have any objection to me transcribing your talk and uploading that. You would, of course, be completely free to copyedit and otherwise change it as you see fit. Regards. --Epipelagic (talk) 05:25, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- I don't have a transcript, sorry. Does YouTube offer closed captioning, which might serve as a first draft (the uploader might have to request this)? I appreciate your interest but wonder whether this talk was organized well enough to use that way. If you decide to start an essay I'd be happy to contribute. — soupvector (talk) 06:03, 20 November 2015 (UTC)
- Good! I'll transcribe it then. --Epipelagic (talk) 07:01, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Saw your talk
Hey, just wanted to tell you I saw your talk at WikiConference USA on Youtube, and it was really good. One of the points you brought up is a need to create a simple way to submit image to Commons. I've recently applied for a grant to create this type of process at meta:Grants:IEG/Health images for all. I was primarily aiming at organizations, but if you think there is a will among individual academics to donate images I am willing to help set up the page for that as well. If all goes well I will likely start drafting the site in a little over a week, and have a first iteration of the page ready in July/August. I'd be very happy to get some of your input on what is needed, and if you are willing to put me in touch with anyone who wishes to donate images don't hesitate to mail me. Are you coming to Wikimania by the way? Best, Carl Fredrik 💌 📧 04:37, 10 June 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for your supportive response to that talk! If there were a process I could run through and demonstrate for colleagues, I think it would be an easy sell (and I'd be happy to do a dog-and-pony show). If that process won't be simplified for awhile, I'll be happy to send some images and colleagues your way to do some submissions as a demonstration project. I will not, unfortunately, be able to attend WikiMania; I have a scientific meeting at the same time in Belgium. — soupvector (talk) 19:48, 10 June 2016 (UTC)

Apologies - it wasn't clear to me that "Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions" is a formal name; it looked, rather, like a miscategorization using a poorly-capitalized name. I'll undo the category move now. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:38, 14 April 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Stuart Ray! You should know, please. Russia has some priority. In 1941, prof. Nikolay Artemov monograph "Bee venom, its physiological properties and therapeutic use" was published by the USSR Academy of Sciences.[1] In 1957, the USSR Ministry of Health sanctioned use of bee venom to treat certain ailments.[2][3][4] It was the Instruction for Bee Sting Venom Apitherapy. N. M. Artemov (with Prof. G. P. Zaytsev from 2nd MSMI) is the author of The Instruction. See also Apitherapy (in Russian) in Great Russian Encyclopedia, and Bee Venom (in Russian) in Soviet Big Medical Encyclopedia. In Russia apitherapy has state support, see - http://pravo.gov.ru - This is the "Official Internet Portal of Legal Information" - Article of the law 4.5. Prof. Vasily Krylov is the chief apitherapist of Russia. Anyone who knows Russian will be able to confirm all this. Thank you for your interest. --Мит Сколов (talk) 06:37, 13 September 2017 (UTC)

Dengue fever
Hi soupvector,
I see you have edited Wikipedia:VideoWiki/Dengue fever but this hasn't actually published your changes. File:Wikipedia-VideoWiki-Dengue fever.webm hasn't had changes to it since July. Could you publish your changes please. When you do, it looks like VideoWiki will make the upload to Commons with your Commons account. Can you visit the file description page on Commons and let me know if the page has been added to your watchlist (the little star is filled in). -- Colin°Talk 13:46, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- It says the upload is in progress. I'll be curious to see the updated version appear in Commons, and (as you suggest) whether it will be watchlisted for me automagically. — soupvector (talk) 14:29, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- Update: the video did appear on Commons, but it did not watchlist it for me (I added it to my watchlist manually after seeing that the video file had updated). A feature for them to add, if possible. — soupvector (talk) 14:45, 3 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for the info. It is indeed very concerning that it doesn't watchlist the video on Commons. -- Colin°Talk 16:38, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Three C-class articles
Dear Soup,
I hope you're doing well and staying busy since Stockholm. I was thinking about leaning into three articles over the next couple of months that are c-class and related. antibiotic, antiseptic, and antimicrobial. Also considering if we should look at hygiene and disinfectant (which is low priority to all other articles but should be high priority to WPMED). Take a peek at the page view analysis. You can see what happened when the antibacterial page was renamed to antibiotic. At first, I just wanted to move some c-class articles to b-class but then I asked myself, if a WASH worker in a developing nation was information seeking, could they find it easily on wikipedia? I don't think so. Could we better name, structure, and linkk these articles to advance the SDGs? Appreciate your input to help me develop some priorities and point me to best resources. Leaving a link for Doc James for input too. Thanks. Ian Furst (talk) 16:28, 29 December 2019 (UTC)
WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - October 2020

- WikiProject Medicine Newsletter
Greetings! This month celebrates our second (I think) new medicine FA in 2020, a handful of newly reviewed GAs, and of course another month without major on-wiki disaster. The newsletter's featured section is off again, but please continue to drop comments and ideas at the newsletter talk page. Here is what's new this month:
Complete blood count nom. Spicy, his first FA! |
Parkinson's disease now a featured article removal candidate. Discussion here |
News from around the site
- An ongoing drive at WP:Good article nominations seeks interested editors to help review the ~600 current GA nominations. The oldest unreviewed medicine-related GAN was nominated 1.5 months ago.
- An open contributor copyright investigation involves edits to many medicine pages that need to be checked for copyright infringement. Interested editors might skim User:Moneytrees/Money's guide to CCI, and jump right in.
- An update to the appearance of various WMF sites (including this one) will be developed and rolled out slowly over the next year. For details see the WMF blog post and the page on MediaWiki where individual features are being mocked up and discussed.
Discussions of interest
- A discussion over wording at WP:PAID that centers on the extent to which folks that volunteer for an organization have an editing conflict of interest.
- Editors could use more eyes to help sort through a number of data-rich templates at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Medicine#DONTHIDE_-_estrogen_template_problems.

- Issue 6—November 2020
- WikiProject Medicine Newsletter
Greetings. This month marks the return of the project's long-dormant collaboration of the month! With some luck and effort, perhaps we can keep it going. I hope you're all finding ways to remain sane during another tumultuous month. Ready or not, here is what's happening around the project:
Seminal vesicles nom. Tom (LT), reviewed by Berchanhimez |
Parkinson's disease now a featured article removal candidate. Discussion here |
News from around the site
- The WP:MED Collaboration of the Month returns for a trial run. We'll concentrate our efforts for November on Tonsillitis. Please help improve that article, and head to the planning page to nominate articles for future collaboration.
- An open contributor copyright investigation involves edits to ~50 medicine pages that need to be checked for copyright infringement. I've left some short instructions here for the uninitiated. Every little bit helps.
Discussions of interest
- Ongoing discussions consider redesigning the GA/FA icons and moving them to a more prominent place in articles.

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - December 2020
- Issue 7—December 2020
- WikiProject Medicine Newsletter
Hello. I hope this newsletter finds you well. For those struggling to focus on writing articles during these tumultuous times, you are not alone. For those stuck at home with more time and energy to dedicate to the encyclopedia, all the more power to you. There is – as always – lots to do. Here is what's happening around the project:
Intramuscular injection nom. Berchanhimez, reviewed by Bibeyjj |
Buruli ulcer nom. Ajpolino |
News from around the site
- As you can see, the medicine GA queue is full-to-bursting, with the oldest medicine nomination waiting over three months for review. Please help review when you have time, so your colleagues can move on to their next projects.
- The WP:MED Collaboration of the Month was Tonsillitis, attracting edits from 11 medicine editors! December's collaboration will be Dexamethasone. Head to Talk:Dexamethasone to coordinate our efforts.
- Thanks to the medicine editors who helped out, Wikipedia:Contributor copyright investigations/Walidou47 is now closed. If you see other medicine-related backlogs that you'd like announced in the newsletter, please post them here.
Discussions of interest
- There is a large, ongoing discussion regarding the status of subject-specific notability criteria.
- The Community Wishlist Survey is live until December 7th.
For a list of ongoing discussions in WP:MED-tagged articles, see Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Discussions
Also, a reminder to see Article Alerts for a list of medicine-related AfDs, CfDs, merge discussions, and more!
Backlog of the month
This month I'm trying out a new element of the newsletter – a backlog of the month. The WikiProject Medicine template is on the talk page of 44,944 articles, of which 18,111 have some kind of maintenance tag on them, indicating problems large or small. Each month, I'll highlight some small task to get you out of your normal editing focus and chip away at the project's massive maintenance backlogs. I'll aim for tasks that can be worked on in small chunks, perhaps on days when you can't focus on big problems, or have 15 minutes to burn at your computer.
The first backlog of the month will be the 410 medicine articles that cite no sources. These tend to be lower-traffic topics. Some just need verification that the topic actually exists, along with a quick reference. Others are best redirected to more substantial pages, or even brought to AfD. Feel free to scroll through the list for topics that interest you, or just start at the top. This feature will last as long as folks are interested enough to engage with it. If you see backlogs that would be a good fit, post them here. Thanks all, and happy referencing!

Thank you for being here!
I wanted to say thank you for taking the time to provide your expert contributions to articles covered by Wikipedia:WikiProject COVID-19. I can imagine the frustration reading what us amateurs have to say but your help is crucial and very much appreciated. I hope you are safe and well. -- {{u|Gtoffoletto}} talk 09:37, 3 December 2020 (UTC)
- I wish I could spend more time here on WP, and deeply appreciate the efforts of all who are doing so much to make WP a valuable resource in these challenging times. It's also very healthy for those who consider themselves experts to argue from evidence rather than authority (one of my lessons from working on WP content). Thanks for all you're doing, and please don't hesitate to ping me if I can be of assistance. — soupvector (talk) 12:27, 3 December 2020 (UTC)

A small request
@Soupvector:, Sorry to ping you again. I was thinking of using File:Ribosome mRNA translation en.svg for modRNA. Can it be used. If yes, what should be the caption and under which section it can be placed. I am planning to add an image to DYK if available. Thank you — Amkgp 💬 17:38, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- That image does represent translation from mRNA, so I think it's a reasonable illustration. — soupvector (talk) 17:43, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Soupvector, What caption can I put so that its both correct and understandable by an average reader. — Amkgp 💬 17:57, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Suggested caption: "A ribosome (depicted in green) creates a protein (depicted here as a string of beads representing amino acids) encoded in an mRNA (depicted as a ribbon of nucleosides) that may be modified to reduce inflammation in the cell." Does that help? — soupvector (talk) 18:07, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Soupvector, Yes for the article. I am thinking of using " A ribosome mRNA translation inside a cell from where the modRNA is derived" - short for DYK image only. What do you say? — Amkgp 💬 18:12, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- That doesn't parse for me, because this doesn't depict the process for making modRNA, it illustrates the way mRNA (including modRNA) can generate protein. How about, "A ribosome translates mRNA (modified to reduce inflammation, i.e. modRNA) into the encoded protein"? — soupvector (talk) 18:18, 9 December 2020 (UTC)
- Soupvector, I agree with your words. Thank you — Amkgp 💬 18:33, 9 December 2020 (UTC)

WikiProject Medicine Newsletter - January 2021
- Issue 8—January 2021
- WikiProject Medicine Newsletter
2020 is behind us at last. Off Wikipedia, the year has been trying. On Wikipedia, I hope you've found the time you spent here fulfilling and diverting. I've taken the opportunity to place a few end-of-year statistics for reflection below. If you think of any data that would be useful to find (or begin gathering) to gauge the project's success, please let me know. With that, here is what's happening around the project:
Buruli ulcer nom. Ajpolino, my first successful FAC |
Louise Boursier nom. Doug Coldwell |
Year in Review
With 2020 now in the rear view mirror, a few numbers to give a sense of where our project is at: In 2020 we added a record number of medicine articles (i.e. articles with the WP:MED tag on their talk pages), starting the year with 41,243 and ending with 45,247. The ~4,000 new articles is well above the norm, presumably due to new covid-related articles. In terms of reviewed content, we added three featured articles (Dementia with Lewy bodies, Complete blood count, and Buruli ulcer), and lost three to the ravages of time, leaving our total at 66. We also added 42 newly reviewed good articles from 23 different nominators, bringing our total to 296. See a full list of reviewed content from 2020 here. Outside of reviewed content our contributions are more challenging to measure. I'm sure much our time was spent making small improvements, guiding new editors, removing junk from articles, and dealing with the raging global pandemic (on and off the site). I am interested in ways we can quantify and assess our project's progress going forward, so if anyone has ideas for other data we could find or collect, do let me know.
Other notes
- The WMF's Community Wishlist Survey has ended. Results are posted here.
- If you missed it, consider reading folks' thoughts on helping new editors at this recent WT:MED discussion.
- After a quieter month at the Collaboration of the Month (Dexamethasone), we'll be taking this month off. The COTM will return in February. Propose and vote on nominations here.
- Thanks to all who helped deal with last month's backlog, medicine articles that cite no sources. 28 down, 382 to go. We'll pick a new backlog next month. In the meantime, for any interested, I've posted an updated list of articles that lack sources here.

- As part of the Talk pages project, the reply and new discussion tools have been released as beta features. You can enable them at Special:Preferences.
- This month's maintenance backlog is articles marked as too technical. Please help clarify these pages for non-specialists.
- Longtime medicine editor, administrator, and tech-wiz RexxS has retired – hopefully temporarily – following an arbitration case. Among other things, RexxS has long advocated improving Wikipedia's accessibility for readers with disabilities. Adrian Sandra Dobs moved to draftspace
Thank you for the article you recently created, Adrian Sandra Dobs; however it is not yet suitable to remain published because it lacks references. Especially since it describes a living person, it needs citations from reliable, and ideally independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:
" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Thanks again! Innisfree987 (talk) 19:41, 29 October 2021 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia
Dear fellow editor,
I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.
All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.
Please note that by filling out this questionnaire, you consent to participate in this research. The survey is anonymous and all personal details relevant to your experience will be kept private and will not be transferred to any third party.
I appreciate your support of this research and thank you in advance for taking the time to participate and share your experiences! If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at my Wikipedia user page or through my email listed on the survey page (or by Wikipedia email this user function).
The survey is accessible through the LINK HERE.

- Since last newsletter, frightfully few medicine articles have passed through our main content review processes, Good Article and Featured Article. While we can agree there's more to editing than chasing bronze stars and green blobs, it would be nice to see the catalog of "Good" and "Featured" medicine articles growing rather than just aging. If you're interested in taking on a project but would like some light guidance or a helping hand, feel free to post your plans at WT:MED and you may find others willing to join.
- An ongoing effort seeks to review/update our oldest featured articles. Major depressive disorder, Lung cancer, and Schizophrenia are next on the chopping block (so to speak). If you're interested in helping to update any, please post at WT:MED or at those articles' talk pages. If you're new to the FA process, I'd encourage you to enlist the help of someone(s) who has been through the process before, as they can help clarify expectations and save you time.

- After creating the draft and seeing the notice that AfC review might take months - and before your deletion appeared - I copied the article's content into article space because I thought the refs did establish notability. Apologies if this (my good faith copy-paste prior to seeing your decision) generates confusion but a professor, department chair, and past president of a national professional organization seems notable. — soupvector (talk) 21:41, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure what to do now with the article space version - hoping that after consideration you or others seeing this might recognize the notability.
